Hi Monk, long time no see!

Yes we're getting a new UI soon, but I don't think that it will be very minimalist. They're adapting elements from the store to include in the library view (such as user tags and reviews) so I'll be shocked if they can implement all of these new features while keeping the UI clean and minimalistic. Hopefully using skins on the client will remain possible after the new update.

And please let us know what you think about A Bird Story!
Uh... why would I need reviews on my library pages? Tags could be useful, but I don't see a reason to be kept up to date on reviews unless I'm some crazy person thumbs-downing every bad review I see.

Some impressions for my 500th game, (what else?) the hidden-object game Samantha Swift and the Hidden Roses of Athena.

The story: You play Samantha Swift, an archaeologist, whose job appears to be stealing shit from other countries to put in her museum. Some of her justifications are astounding: at one point she breaks into the Louvre and says "Oh, I'll put back the stuff I need after," only to reach a secret room and say "Well, THIS room is undiscovered, so I can take stuff from here," as if that's how it works. She starts off in Greece, looking for a scepter, when she finds the other half of a shield she apparently already had. Upon leaving the ruin, in true Indiana Jones style, the bad guy shows up to take her scepter. (You see, the good guys steal shit to put in museums, while the bad guys steal shit to keep. There's a difference!) She goes home and reassembles the shield that her nemesis didn't take, and here comes a crazy story about how Athena blessed Athens with six gifts in the form of roses (Art, Skill, Justice, Industry, Wisdom, and...um...I think the last one was Letting Your Economy Go to Hell.) The Athenians soon realized that these roses could fall into the wrong hands so they scattered the roses all over the world, to places like Rome, Guatemala, Japan, Tibet, England and France. Each city is labelled with stereotypical images, such as a papal mitre for Rome.

Wait, WHAT? When did Athena do this exactly; would the Greeks even have heard about Japan, Guatemala and Tibet; would the Catholic Church even have existed at that point; why would you hand off a possession granted to you by a goddess to other countries...just...this makes no sense on SEVERAL levels. So off you go to these other countries to recover the roses, and steal more shit along the way.

I'm accustomed to hidden-object games not having cohesive stories, but this one...wow. Also, spoilers, literal Deus Ex Machina at the end, and her sidekick is all "What now, return the shield to Athens?" Samantha is all, "In time, but first, a vacation." Based on her previous exploits, I read that as "lol no." Now, if this was set in the 1890s or something, when archaeologists basically assumed everything in the world belonged to their own country, I might write it off as something charmingly roguish. But one of the first items she has to find is her PDA, placing the story in the mid-2000s, and everyone should know better. She's probably ended up causing six international incidents. "It was undiscovered, I tell you!" So yeah, the story is pretty hard to ignore.

The graphics: Now this is a new one on me. The store page graphic makes it look "hidden object graphic style," but when you actually play it, it looks more cartoony, like Samantha Swift is a Kim Possible with softer features. A lot of the hidden objects are outlined in black, making it pretty easy, but in some cases that's really needed because they're asking for objects that are TINY.

Oh, no graphical options apart from "fullscreen." I guess in 2008, monitors only came in one size.

The gameplay: People who've read my impressions might know that hidden-object games these days are less "hidden object games with minigames and inventory puzzles" and more "point-and-click adventures with hidden object scenes." Samantha Swift is decidedly old-school: EVERY SCREEN is a hidden object scene. So much so, it actually feels a bit tiring to get through. Your eyes want a rest. There are a few minigames, not many, and a good number of inventory puzzles, but wow, if you like finding hidden objects, this will be your cup of tea.

The audio and dialogue: No voice acting. Either they couldn't afford it, decided bad voice acting is worse than no voice acting, or more likely, wanted to keep the disk space low so it could fit on a CD-ROM. The dialogue is only minimally janky. The music is forgettable, but at least they didn't go with the "pan pipes = jungle, accordions = Italy" trope.

The length: Steam profile says 2.8 hours. There are no achievements to hunt, but there's also no difficulty setting, so playing for 2.8 hours on "easy" mode makes me thing the game is probably longer than average.

The verdict: It's not bad, but it's not great. Playing constant hidden-object scenes was a combination of nostalgic, refreshing, and exhausting. Seeing cartoony characters was also a nice change, and more hidden-object developers might do well to try it. So you might like it, or you might not. This really is a "your mileage may vary" type game. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm pretty sure my local liquor store has an undiscovered area.

Edit: Bottom of the page. Typical.

Always cool to read your reviews.
I gotta start playing some hidden object game one of these days since I got a boatload from all the various bundles.

For people with a lot of games, it might be somewhat useful to decide on what to play next, if they don't have a specific game in mind already.

If Yoko Taro were to make an adventure about lies, money, debt and poverty, it were like this

From the same guy that made actual Sunlight - a game that nobody but me played apparently - and it's very, very good

Actual Sunlight was great (very sad, too)

So I bought a game during the sale as a gift to a friend, scheduled to be delivered in a few days. Only I just saw they got the game themselves today. What will happen to the gift now? Will they receive it anyway and just not be able to accept it? And after that I'll receive a refund? Also, will this refund affect the cards drop rate?

No one knows anything about this? Not even JaseC?

100$ is absolutely fine. This kind of thing would still happen if it price quadrupled. Meanwhile it would affect actual devs.

Sure. I think its okay. Its just that the 100$ wont really eliminate scam games and asset swaps unlike what people like TB/Sterling said might happen.

I actually think its unfair that its 100$ for everywhere in the world because 100$ in eastern europe is different than 100$ in central europe.

It really doesn't need to "eliminate" anything other than trying to prevent games solely made for profiting off the steam trading cards system. Everything else should be let in if it's legal. It's the responsability of the consumer to look at the damn thing and decide what is worth their purchases.

Yup, like this is a game I couldn't care less about, but ya know it makes me want to replay Mad Max XP

Not exactly sure how it works, but apparently free non-steam (?) copy of Ryse:

https://www.gamesessions.com/zz/Game/RyseSonOfRome

You play for 5 minutes and it's yours to keep on GameSessions. Requires a 25.7gb download.

When playing, there's a Shift-Tab notification that's always displayed at the bottom of the screen that encourages you to buy a Steam key. Not sure if that can be disabled. Also, I get interruptions during gameplay every now and then, asking me to rate the game / check out other games available on GameSessions. It's a bit annoying, but at least it's free. And the game is not as bad as I expected.

Fucking hell, Tomb Raider Anniversary can be frustrating sometimes, but that tower section in Great Pyramid level is one of the most impossible and unfair bullshit ever. Seriously, i can't remember last time i was so pissed off by a game, who the fuck designed this shit? It highlights all bad things in this game, camera and controls are clunky and unresponsive, Lara constantly not grabbing right ledges and falling from cliffs, idiotic checkpoint save system, and those fucking time limits are way too strict! People may don't like TR 2013 and RotTR, but at least controls in them were fluid and never bothered me that much.

Man PUBG is hard, most of the time I'm dead before I see who is shooting. I like the spawn mechanic with the parachute jump, seen another parachute aiming for the same house is nerve wrecking.

Oh yeah. It's a really weird feeling just walking along, hearing a single shot hit you (not the gunshot itself), and falling dead.

Kinda sucks, but I can't be mad that they somehow found both a sniper rifle and a good scope, while also getting a headshot. Like, they'll probably get ambushed for their noisyness anyways--I know I always am.

skipping the best one? shameful

Nah. Its the 3rd best one :p

Also the speedrun for DS2 is kind of lame since you can just dupe souls with one of the boss fights over and over again with Ascetics which let you skip first half of the game. At least that is how it used to be don't know if they ever patched it. Plus there are a lot of other lame glitches that let you skip a lot of the game. They could do an all boss run in that case but it would be too long and too much of that shit tbh. They'll probably do it next year.

MUnited83

For you.
I mean I would like to believe games obviously using stolen assets would have been weeded out in Greenlight.
I'm sure that if WB has a issue with it they can afford a intern on their massive legal team to send a quick DMCA.

Eh, not really. All the major skip glitches have been fixed for quite a while, not even present in SOTFS.

Thankfully only AAA games are vulnerable to asset rips.

Take 5 minutes of your time to fill a DMCA then?

Not sure how exactly would you try to have Steam police the assets themselves before aproving a game, especially in the case of indie games. It really makes no sense at all. Do you understand the amount of workforce required to check for such a thing? And how do you know it's a actuall asset rip? Many indies use common freely accessible assets on their games. If you see the same tree on Indie Game A and Indie Game B it doesn't mean Indie Game B ripped it.
