Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age - Review Thread

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
Yeah, there's pre-load. It's 40GB so better start downloading :D

OK OK!

so pre load now, and unlock at midnight?

if i can be playing the opening hours tomorrow with my morning coffee + emails i am in 1000%

Never beat original. I guess I got bored halfway through and decided to play other games. The tough enemies tired me out back in the day cuz I playe dit wrong and tried to level up everyone equally which was a mistake from what I was told. Guess I'll give it another chance.

how are you "supposed" to play?

LOL someone fucked up that video. They have the PS2/PS4 labels reversed.

I'm really considering getting this but I still need to finish Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn and FFXV. I might get it and just throw it on the backlog.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
Is there any technical or legal reason why this couldn't be released on Switch. Seems like it would be a perfect fit. Started it back in the day but never finished it as the PS3 came out around the same time.

Western players are in for a treat with all of these adjustments and improvements made from the original release of Final Fantasy XII - many of which are old but never made their way West originally. The job system adds another level of interest to party coordination, elements like fast-forward and map overlays add a considerable amount of convenience, and the game looks and sounds great too. This remaster may not change the mind of everyone, but it is no doubt one of the most intriguing entries in the franchise and clearly the definitive version of a truly brilliant game.

I know I know, I hate Switch port begging as much as anyone so sorry :)

It was an honest question though, I think a remaster is fair game. When people are moaning about Battlefront etc not getting a port, that's a different story.

Gamereactor Finland gave it 10/10. The reviewer said he hasn't given a 10 in years but TZA deserves it. Thinks the game has aged superbly and it still stands tall even among current day RPGs.

Dunkey said to take reviewers with a grain of salt so I'll juts buy this game and play it for myself to see what it's all about, looking forward to it.

It is absolutely incredible, as is always the case with Matsuno games localized by Alexander O. Smith. A great article on the subject. I've never played the game in japanese so I'm glad the option is there and I'll definitely give it a try but I expect I will go back to the english voices after a while.

This is a really good article and just goes to show how much work went into the localization for FFXII. It's one of many reasons why I vastly prefer it over every single 3D Final Fantasy.

Probably picking 3 people and using them for the whole game. Extremely boring way to do it though, I use everyone in all party rpgs

Basically this. Or at least don't try to play everyone cuz there's a shitload of grinding if you do. I'm gonna just settle on a few characters and just run with it.

First step, no Vaan once I get a full party, lol

I like how some of these reviews don't put a focus on Vaan as a main character but on the whole party (or Ashe's story). Hope the game gets the attention it deserves and it opens the floodgates towards more Ivalice games.

I didn't even know about the 2x and 4x speed you can toggle at any time. That's a game changer for sure. I already played the hell out of it back in the day so being able to significantly speed things up is a tremendous help. If it was my first time playing the game I wouldn't use it though.

Not going to lie but I wish all JRPG's had this option and shipping a remaster without it a buzzkill.

The game is actually pretty interesting from a behind the scenes perspective.

Rumor has it that the 2 people you start the game off with were added late cycle because square was concerned that younger players wouldn't like the game if all the characters were in their 30s.

Regarding the outfits.. it's just the style of the game. Don't expect it to ever make sense. Half of the playable characters have really odd outfits IMO.

Anyway, it's better now than it was before because the PS2 release gave the initial starting character really oddly defined abs that looked...sharp. Now that character at least looks like they have muscles instead of skin-colored rocks for abs.

ah...Thanks for clarifying

Yup. This is one of the rare cases where I will always pick English over Japanese. It's one of the best localizations in gaming.

Not 90+ but higher than X/X-2 and XV. Truly the best FF of the past decade and a half (I prefer X and X-2 but still).

do the two jobs work simultaneously or is it a "Switch to black mage/archer board" kinda thing?
Each job has a different set of passives/equipment/skills/spells that they can unlock. So having two jobs (let's say Red Mage and Time Mage as an example) on Vaan will allow you to unlock everything unique to those, mix&match the equipment between those two jobs, and use skills/techniques/spells/passives from both those jobs at the same time.. but only for Vaan.

okay thats what i was wondering, I know the japanese international edition is what changed the job board and made it one job per person, so knowing that you can use 2 jobs and abilities at the same time means we might see some new meta for the game, since iirc the optimal build forced you into having basch, fran and balthier i think? (again for an optimal build)

Really excited to dive into this tomorrow. Matsuno is responsible for like 3 of my top 5 games.

I still remember ripping open Dragon Quest 8 just so I could try the FF12 demo first.

I was thinking of ordering a copy but I still have my second PS2 copy wrapped, so there's little need to get it for the collection. Just started downloading. Can't wait!

As a fan of the original Final Fantasy XII that's a hard sell. Not a fan of restricted job classes but I was willing to overlook it if you could reassign jobs. Oh well.
I'm 110% in agreement with you.

I'm still hugely excited for the rest of the changes. I honestly can't wait!

I still have to play Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, X and X-2 before tackling XII. I know I can start wherever I want, but I want to do them in order. I already have all of those games (plus XIII, XIII-2, XIII:LR on Steam, and XIV on PC).

I'm probably going to get it now anyway. I have €27 in credit in game, so I can get the standard edition for just €18. I really don't need the steelbook edition.

Loved that game when it originally released. I never understood the mixed reception - but I'm glad if the "I've seen the light attitude" of some help it shine even more now.
My only problem is that I've just started playing FF XIV and stopping that for a game I've already played makes no sense.

But that's like, the best part! You can't just make everyone do everything, emphasizing the use of your entire party to deal with different challenges.
And progression isn't mostly samey for all characters at the start of the game. That's huge to me. You can't even truly gimp yourself, outside of making a party entirely of Time mages or something.

But okay, okay, different strokes.

Why are our main character wearing whatever the hell he's wearing?

The central city in the game is supposed to have a Middle Eastern market town vibe going on, the character is a sort of blonde Aladdin street rat. Why he's wearing a metal vest though, I think Japan is the only answer to that

I can see it happening. It'll probably be a thing once VII, VIII, IX, X and XI are ported over.

But that's what I want to avoid 🤔

Outside of story scenarios that mandated it, I removed Vaan and Panelo permanently from my party lineup as soon as I could.
A huge improvement 🙂

I'll just have to make sure I assign them jobs I don't care for this time.. but 4 jobs that I don't want is a lot 😒

You can't compare review scores unless you ensured that all reviews were by the exact same reviewers in the exact same mindset for both. Especially not for nostalgic rereleases.

Let's not send this thread down the review-thread shitter this early, please.

I tought this game was bad?

I've been reading GAF about this game at the last two weeks and everyone agreed that this game was pretty bad but now, looking at reviews It doesn't seem like that.

I didn't played the game yet so I honestly don't know what to think, anymore.
