Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age - Review Thread

I thought FF12 was a fucking terrible game across the board when it came out but it sounds like they put in a good amount of work for people who liked it and for new folks so good on them.

I might check it out again down the road just to see if my complete hatred of it holds up. Revisiting X really lowered my opinion of the game overall (and made me appreciate X-2 some more) so I'm curious to see how 12 holds up (or doesn't)

As one reviewer said FF12 was before it's time, and still is in some way today. People wanted FFX in a new setting back then so a lot of people were dissapointed. You should really give it another shot. Not sure how old you are but I also think it's a game that relates better to adults than teenagers.

FF12 combat was unlike anything the mainline series had at the time. I admit that I didn't really get it back then. Just kinda went with it.

Yeah, it really was a big departure.

Then 13 happened, and To some extent 15, abd suddenly 12 wasn't that big of a leap all things considered.

I hated this game when I first played it. Then I played it again and absolutely adored it until my fat PS2 broke.

Steelbook will be mine. Can't wait to finally finish it.

I did my FFXV plat cleanup in preparation for XII, and oh boy would that game have benefited from some of the systems implemented in XII.
Then again, I thought Gambits would become some kind of a new staple in JRPGs in some form, so what do I know.

It still boggles my mind that almost nobody has taken on gambits, not even SE themselves and XIII and XV both had AI party members.

Like a lot of others here, I didn't really like it very much the first time I played it. A second attempt years later completely changed my opinion. It's the last mainline entry (sans XIV) that I really enjoyed in restrospect. Looking forward to giving the definitive version a try.

I really want to play this game but how long is it? I just finished Persona 5 last night, not sure if I can do another 100+ Hour game right away.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

With more high profile RPGS (eg Dragon Age) using a similar system, it seems like FFXII was truly ahead of it's time. Probably still the best representation of an MMO style Single Player RPG IMO.

FF XII haters visibly confused right now

I was way more confused back when the original version came out to better overall scores tbh.

They need to get VIII and IX on PS4 first, the fact that they haven't yet is mind boggling. Particularly as its the 30th anniversary this year, what better reason is there?

I wasn't being serious with that post.

But yeah, it would be nice to have VIII and IX on the PS4. I don't know how difficult it was to port VII to the system, but assuming it wasn't too much of a hassle, there's a lot of easy money to be had in bringing those two (wonderful) entries to the current gen.

What I thought the combat really could have used was a weapon skill system similar to in XI, should have had a sequel like X-2 (without the nonsense story)

I suspect the only reason they bothered with VII was because they started work on remake

FFXII never scored poorly, everyone who never played it who's posting that they thought the game was trash is probably only doing so because they listened to vocally scorned fans.

Tragic how the salt of others will stop people from experiencing good games for themselves.

I don't get why people keep mentioning the combat as if it's the only reason people have mixed opinions on XII. Issues with the villain, the last half of the story, and some of the characters played a major part as well.

Anyway, it's nice that it's getting good reviews. I really liked this game when I first played it (I went in with low expectations after hearing so many negative opinions) but as time has passed, I feel like my like of it has gone down.

I am having a tough decision should i get this game or not ff xv kinda was my official first final fantasy and i liked it. I also played ff 3 or 4 on ds.

Kinda also debating on getting ff7, 8 & 9 on psvita i can tolerate older games fine so is it worth it? They are 4 euro each now on psn.

So far i do like the FF series.

Every FF is drastically different so it's hard to say whether or not you should play it. If you liked XV then you should definitely play VIII + the other the PS1 game before I would play XII. You should also try out the X+X-2 remaster!!!

12 is nothing like 15 as far as gameplay goes.

But if you just liked the general feel of the game's overall tone though, then yeah you should definitely get the other ones.

$12 for 3 of the best games of that generation is a great deal

I don't think liking XV is really any indicator of whether or not you'll like this game, maybe watch some videos of the combat. The PS1 games definitely, the vita is a great way to play them

It is a much better game than XV in all regards. Definitely picking it up at some point. The soundtrack is all sorts of amazing!

As with many remasters before it the graphics (or should I say style) takes an heavy it, distorting the original art direction for some unknown reason. As it's pretty obvious from the comparison screen posted in the first page of the topic. Why they do this I don't understand, it lost alot of charm and it's as if who's responsible for the port/remaster didn't really grap the beauty of the original. Also the new lighting system makes everything more flat, I'll always prefer baked lighting to any modern solution. Painted textures are awesome and should be back to stay.

I didn't appreciate 12 until 13 rolled out, didn't appreciate 13 till 15 made its way 10 years later. I really hope I don't end up having to appreciate 15.

Going from FFX to XII was a little bitter sweet especially since the games in between was a direct sequel and a crappy MMO. XII didn't have a strong cast of characters and the plot was a little wishy washy, but there's always something about the world and exploring that I always found exciting. The changes to the job system are very exciting as it expands on that. The updated visuals, music, and uncompressed sound are a much needed blessing.

So I am either going to be playing this or FF15 next.

Kind of excited for this. Might pick it up and play right away. Really curious to see how it's aged. It's funny seeing how the internet has turned its opinion on it. I've always liked it. Not top 4 FF or anything, but good.

So I am either going to be playing this or FF15 next.

Hmmmmm

XII has some issues, some of which are fixed here, but XV is one of the worst in the entire series in almost every way. I say go for XII.

Great scores. I had this on my gamefly queue after the Kotaku article thread got me excited for it, then removed it a couple days later when I remembered how much Vaan sucks. Maybe I'll give FF12 another go later this summer.

I'm really not the biggest fan of XV, but consider that it is still receiving updates and features and will continue to do so in the near future.
FFXII is fucking great right now.

I'd say go for XV. XII is better, but XV is still pretty good, and crucially its shorter! You can play through XV and THEN XII. If you start with XII you'll be playing that for ages because its both incredibly good, and super long.

I'm glad XII exists, warts and all.

In terms of worldview, storylines and exploration, I feel that the final game probably only looked at 1/5th of its actual promise. but it's at least there with some form of completion.

I want to take this journey to Ivalice for the first time so badly, but my backlog is so overwhelming right now... And I really want to play Yakuzo 0. I'm drowning, fam.

I never got past a couple hours of the original release I'll try again this time I'm older I guess maybe that'll play a part. How long is it normally

That might have been my problem. I remember playing some of the older games then jumped in to this one, and just didn't like it at all. It didn't feel like a real FF game at the time, I'm willing to give it another shot as I'm more tolerant now. So the new battle system shouldn't bug me as it did. Hopefully I can fall in love with it like others have.
