Am I crazy or does the Xbox one have the worst menu layout ever?

Use the Movies and TV app OP, you don't need to download a media player for this... everything you need is right there already.

I am trying to navigate to watch videos on a USB and it is infuriating. Apparently you need an app to do so, but there is no quick way to jump onto the store to get it. Everything feels like it takes 5 buttons to get anywhere even launching games seems esoteric.

Not to be rude on them, but this feels so backwards from the relatively easy to navigate Xbox 360 blades and dashboard.

I find the Xbox One UI super efficient and smooth.

Press RT -> pins
Press LT -> you are back up
Press Right, A -> games
Press Right, A, Down -> apps
Press RB four times -> store
Press Xbox Button -> quick menu with more shortcuts

I always thought people on this forum were tech-savvy lol. If you can't operate the XBO UI with ease, I'd be surprised how you are able to get anything done at all on a computer system.

Thanks I did restart it and now it worked. This whole thing really confuses me especially as a software developer like how does Microsoft release something like this...?

It was a glitch. It's not a worldwide failure In OS software because it didn't work for you.

It just takes too much effort to perform basic functions, like signing out or downloading games you bought. It's much more streamlined in ps4 or switch. You don't need to search how to do it.

It seems it was designed as a media machine first rather than a console.

It's not just you.

It's horrendous, I didn't mind it day one to be honest, what we have now is just a clunky mess and horrible to use.

It really irritates me now it's two presses to return to the home screen.

I'd have those that after 4 years it would be solid, not worse with every iteration.

Come on, that is alot to memorize and is very counter intuitive if you ask me. Eveyrhing is "easy" when you spend alot of time with a certain OS but the learning curve shouldnt be this steep.

The more i use my PS4 Pro, the more i hate going back to the Xbox OS. Even with 2 big redesign’s this gen, its still clunky, slow, and overall, terrible. The OS at least had snap before as a differentiation, but since that’s removed, the PS4 OS is just much better as a console OS.

MS really should just start over.

X1 dashboard is really simple and straightforward.

What I'd love to see being improved in future versions is the performance!
It is slow! very slow! compared to my PC at least! I always get that feeling of using a Pentium 3 with 512mb of ram pc....

When the 360 came out, that interface was the shit.

Nowadays? Yeah. It's pretty bad.
True, 360 UI is terrible nowadays filled with auto playing ads which tends to slow down browsing or sometimes freeze the console altogether.

...if that's what you call steep, I feel like you're trying too hard to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Even if you need to spend 5 minutes to figure out how to use it, it's horrible when you can use competitors systems instantly. And Xbox one UI is definitely more than 5 minutes to get used to.

Really that hard??

I mean, it literally took me five minutes to figure out how to switch accounts on my brother's PS4, so...

RT is like page-down on Windows
LT is like page-up on Windows
RB is like TAB on Windows
LB is like Shift+TAB on Windows

I find this super intuitive and hope MS keeps these mechanisms because they are actually a great idea. And you don't have to memorize anything because you can always see which tile is highlighted.

I'm not too terribly fond of it but ever since I learned how to hid the Mixer and OneGuide screens/tabs a few days ago, I've found that I like it better and that stuff loads a lot faster. I'm still tempted to go and hide community tab as well and then just have the main screen and the store as my only options. Sucks that the 'feature' is apparently going away at some point (I saw where Major Nelson said it wasn't an intended option and that it will be removed soon).

And this is off topic but whoa! I was looking in that little IM box and see the name "trixie360." Seeing that name is a trip, I completely forgot she existed. Man, could you even imagine the shit she would be getting from asshole GGers if she were still a spokesperson for the Xbox brand?
That image takes me back though. I loved the Blades so much.

I think there's WAY too much stuff going on in the menus/dashboard. It needs to be simplified. It's very noticeable after playing on my PS4/Switch.

Blades were terrible too.

Did you guys never need to look for games or demos in the store on blades when it filled up? It possibly the shittiest experience buying anything ever.

Absolutely awful. It spends so much time shoving ads and social features in .y face that it gets in the way of my usability.

People think the Switch UI/store are too bare bones but they stay out of the way...

Wasn't the launch UI just the windows 8 start screen? I can't see how this is any better.

And the crackling sound when navigating the tiles, fix that shit already MS.

Sounds like something is broken if this is true, and judging by how the restart fixed it I guess so.

How often do you use your Xbox? My 9 year old nephew has no difficulty navigating it, yet GAF thinks it's impossible to find their way around.

Seldom, but good UX design should be based upon intuitive design. One shouldn't have to be familiar with the setup to get going.

Good app it's what I'm using now, but I had to download it it wasn't installed by default. A lot better than the PS4 media app though which loses audio sync when watching over usb and no subtitle support.

Xbox One's UI is leaps and bounds above PS4's.

Your opinion and all that, but man we are so different in viewpoint.

Edit: Even at launch I've never seen much validity in the complaints about XB1's UI. It's not at all difficult. Much easier to quickly access your games and apps than on PS4.

I completely dislike the xbox one UI as well. Its by far the worst out of the current gen consoles. It's not only messy looking and cumbersome, but if you have even a slightly rough internet connection it's atrocious. The xbox UI also crashes more games and gives more errors than any console I've ever used. It's so poorly constructed. Microsoft NAILED the 360 with the blades. That was their gaming developers in their prime, when the xbox heads wanted a dedicated videogame box. and was perfectly suited for a console experience. Now its horrendous. I feel like there's to much running in the background of the xbox one. Make it simple again.

It's bad. The PS4 is my main system but I got the Xbox One for 4K disc playback and a few games. The amount of ads shoved in your face is embarrassing. I don't pay for Live so I'm hit with an ad (to pay for Live) before I resume playback of my game I want to play. I really wish you could disable it.

This as well, so awful. I also really dislike how the gamehub is forced in your face unlike the PS4 and switch where that stuff is there if you want it, which I don't.

It's really not difficult at all, and you admitted yourself you never use the Xbox, which always seems to be the case in these threads.

lol no.

Nope. Pretty much the opposite.
How? On Xbox from the home screen it's literally "Right -> A" and you're at My Games and Apps, or from anywhere "Xbox Button -> A -> Down" and you're there again. On PlayStation you have to go home, then scroll all the way to the right to get to the library. Which is just terrible, still can't believe they haven't improved library more.

I'm glad they finally added the functionality to that particular app, there used to be some other super barebones app available for your needs.

Didn't start there, but it's now the best and most beautiful console UI ever.

You need to get used to it and know some stifd, tho.
But that is the case for every operating system in the world.

You are not the only one. For whatever reason xbone's UI is completely hated around here, despite giving the most options with less actions than every other console UI. It even has some well thought focus shifting when you move the cursor that priorize the most common options.

This thread proves it is quite difficult, with people who use it often are okay with it but people who don't use it often are annoyed at the least. Good UX design is based upon ease of use so that people in turn enjoy using your product so much that they will continue to do so.

So in turn, when they do the opposite it turns people away. That's why people who don't like it don't get better at it, there is no reason to do so when the system itself is a chore to use. I wish it wasn't the case but it really does feel like that. A big clunky chore.

My friend recently sold me his white sunset overdrive xbone for 100 bucks. I've been enjoying it alright, but I do find the guide/dashboard UI to be pretty obnoxious.

HOWEVER, there is one particular issue that drives me crazy, I suppose it COULD be my TV but I've never had any similar problems with anything else...

The achievement description texts. It's this incredibly thin white or grey font against a bright green background, and it is just completely fucking unreadable for me no matter how close I sit, or how much I fiddle with the brightness or contrast, I can not read a fucking word of the achievement text.

Does anyone else have the same problem??

You can change the colors of everything, mine are black and purple this much I know at least but couldn't tell you how I did it since I think it was an option at set up.

Not to mention that you can't pin apps on PS4 so you're basically forced to scroll through icon to find the app you want, and that's assuming the app used recently enough to even be on the main screen.

It was even more of a pain to access what you want on PS4 at launch. Thankfully they took a cue from Microsoft and added a quick menu, but there's still a lot of work to be done with the main menu.

I really don't understand the hate the Xbox UI gets, it seems to be the most intuitive and provide the most options of the big 3 os's to me. I find the PS4 to just be a long list of icons that really need rearranging, and I can never seem to find the system setting i'm after. The Switch is fine but so bare bones I never really spend much time in the menu ststem.

Might be your TV. It's easy to read for me. You can change the color at settings > personalization
