They should both be rated higher.
I think Citywalk is the only one showing this in 70mm IMAX in la. U should make the trek out to Irvine and go to the spectrum like me. Love that place
Ayy I'll be there Saturday. That theater is ginormous. You will be fine in those seats. It's so big I always sit in seats O10/11 I think they are. It's nice and private, close to the middle without the hassle. Forget in N out, there's an umami burger right in front as well as a Javiers which has great Mexican

I just got home from watching it. It's so intense from beginning to end. I loved it, easily up there with Nolan's best.
Wish I could've watched it in IMAX like I did for The Dark Knight, Inception and Interstellar but it's too much travel.

Holy crap RT just added two reviews from the same source Kaplan vs Kaplan so I guess a married couple that review movies, both negative.
The wife says it made her jump out of her seat half a dozen times but it didn't matter because of little character development lol

It's not. But some for some people Dunkirk might be too intense, with too little emotional surface to grab in the middle of all the audiovisual mayhem.
I have a question regarding IMAX.
I know there's the "real" 70mm Imax and there's Digital Imax which isn't supposed to be as good as the real deal.
I'm on vacation right now and the local cinema says it has 15/70mm Imax. So is this the "real" Imax or is it some other inferior sort of Imax. The 15 in the front confuses me.

It is IMO, or else there's little reason to care. Otherwise it's just surgical and cold and a technical exercise, like most Nolan movies I find. Audiences care about great characters. After you've seen the movie, it's a bit empty and there's not much to talk about other than technical aspects, the structure of the movie and the fantastic soundtrack.
That's real IMAX. 15 there refers to 15 perfs. True IMAX uses 15 perfs 70mm film stock.

A more apt comparison is Gravity.
I enjoyed both Gravity and Dunkirk BTW.
Here's what I said in the OT:
Definitely this, the lack of story and character development can be really annoying if you care about those thing, Dunkerque is not really a movie, it's more of an experience but at the end, the characters aren't growing, there is no twist, no plot, no nothing, it's just survival scene after another etc...
You don't care about the characters because the movie is too intense, there is no moment for the characters to breath and talk about them, you don't know anything about them at the end, the movie needs 30 more minutes to me but I like what I saw, the technical achievement is marvelous but you're right, the movie is kind of empty, you can't talk about it for hours, there is nothing to talk about really...
Edit: I don't think the movie is overrated but it's a one time experience for me, it's not a movie you'll watch a few times, I think TDK is his best work but Dunkerque is really close.

easy way to look at it is by turning 5/70mm film sideways. i felt like i had an epiphany when I noticed this because i used to get confused too. add 3 (5 perfs x 3 = 15) and you get IMAX 15/70mm. here's a good image

perfs are the little lines you see at the end on film stock
35mm is your normal theater you normally see except now that's digital projection usually 2k today where 35mm film is estimated at ~6.5k resolution if you did the math (remember film aren't made up of pixels)
70mm (or 65mm) is something rare and most filmmakers don't shoot in this either. usually theaters aren't equipped for this but some theaters have some horizontal space in them where they can bring on the projector and show it. my local theater showed hateful 8 in 70mm in 1 theater in its 20 theater building. it was a special accommodation
IMAX 70mm is super rare. the screen is like old crt tvs, more boxy because of the tallness and the screens are usually enormous. my local theater putting up a new screen that can show imax 70mm

so imagine that entire screen filled up with the movie, that's the engulfing experience is imax 70mm. normal 70mm on the screen right here and there would be black bars on the top and bottom. For Dunkirk Nolan shot 75% of the movie in IMAX 70mm which is amazing. Most movie that use the format only have a few minutes on it. Star Wars TFA had about 4 minutes or something and I saw it at this theater and BvS had a few minutes too. the other 25% of dunkirk was shot in 70mm so both of the rare formats.
that is why you should watch this movie should be watched in imax 70mm if possible

I'm tempted to go to a 70mm/ english screening in Germany, its not in my city though..
Nah, Gravity was cheesy as fuck, Dunkirk was believable and restrained.
EDIT: Wrong user.
As posted above, the Gravity comparison comes from the very simple premise, technical prowess, very few dialogs, ticking clock and non-stop suspens.
It's more of an experience than a movie, just like Gravity.

Just came back from a late session. Loved it. Intense from the start to the finish. Like others here, that aspect reminded me of Gravity in that way. I also did feel a connection to most of the characters. Felt like I was right there experiencing the whole mess besides them. I had no problems following each thread and loved how it unfolded.

The best part was the fact that the movie basically just had George Clooney as a character.
I mean, it had George Clooney playing... George Clooney.
It felt like Cuaron just said "Fuck it, I can't think of anything good, let's just make the guy be George Clooney but an astronaut."

Maybe like if Malick decided to not linger for ages on scenes and actually focus on putting a movie together. If the characters decided to stroll on the beach for about 40% of the movie and look dead pan into the ocean, it would be Malick-esque

I think he had the Thin Red Line in mind, which is brilliant, though probably not in the same way.

Same man, it's a real struggle to order his movies. I also struggle with Batsy since he's also my favorite and while so much different than the comics, he's displayed brilliantly in the trilogy. Prestige, Dark Knight & Inception are masterclass movies for me, difficult to see Nolan go to their level but I'll see tonight.

Pretty sure Malick has long been one of Nolan's influences, particularly when it comes to flashbacks/memories and how they're represented.

I enjoyed Memento but it dragged imo. Insomnia didnt do much for me but i liked the lovely visuals. Prestige was meh until I rewatched it and liked it a lot.
Interstellar and Inception blew me away. Very unique scifi flicks with very few plot holes. I really dont understand the hate for interstellar. such a beautiful flim.
