Infamous anime episodes

Either personally or publicly. Which moments have provoked, disturbed, or infuriated you or others in undorgettable ways..?? After that western animaion thread, thought, 'Hmm well there's plenty to be had across hemispheres as well..!!'

Two recent ones I been thinking about:

Higurashi ep. 21;
You know the one.
When Shion, whose gone nuts, tortures Satoko and stabs her until she dies. Oh and she pisses herself.

TTGL ep. 8;
The moment things turn around and the show
kills off its main character.
It's brilliant and the set-up is quite there from the beginning, sure,
the focus is on Simon not Kamina
, but it's still great how they dared to shake things up and forge more compelling characterization through that.

Charizard's Burning Ambition fucked me up as a kid.

Also that episode where Sabrina the psychic-type gym leader has been turning people who lose at her gym into dolls purely for the hell of it.

Also that scene in Hellsing Ultimate where they show what happened to Seras' parents.

Those DBZ episodes where Videl gets her ass kicked by Spopovich. Shit was brutal as fuck in the uncut VHS tapes.

I think I had to warn basically everyone I recommended it to that the Strength episode is a thing in JoJo. Talk about something you can just straight up excise and only improve the source material as a result. It's disgusting, weird, not a very good episode even ignoring that, and doesn't really connect meaningfully anywhere in the grand scheme of things. I still can't believe they didn't outright cut it for the newer anime.

Also the episode(s) in Kill-La-Kill
where Ragyo is just straight-up sexually assaulting her daughters.
Probably self-explanatory as to why.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes - episode 82

Yang Wenli, the seemingly invincible leader of the last remnants of democracy in the galaxy, and one of the two main characters, dies.

EDIT: Well, I thought with infamous you can also count controversial episodes, too, or just stuff where the whole internet in general went "holy shit". Guess if infamous is legendarily bad, then my example doesn't really count.

That shit was insane and one of the most-talked episodes in recent memory. Also, the final two episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The Alessi episodes were a bit much as well.

Getting this out of the way: Samurai Flamenco's
GUILLOTINE GORILLA
Came here for this.

Was not disappointed.

Since folks are mentioning stuff that would qualify as "famous" rather than "infamous", here's another one: Attack on Titan's episode 31. You know the one.

That two episode arc (don't know the episode names or numbers) from samurai champloo centered around mugen and his past. For me it delivered everything emotionally in a good way. The choice of music for the opening scene of the second episode in the arc where mugen is drowning was really effective.

As for shit that was infuriating it would have to be that torture scene from kill la kill. Honestly a lot of that show infuriated me.

"To be fair to Berserk, they've had the good sense not to do what would actually be the most infamous thing, the Forest of Lost Children."

Well, the thing with Berserk was it was a double whammy. There was the content which itself was both a dramatic tonal shift and pretty extreme.

Then there was the fact that it just ended. Right there.

Watched many Anime but that Chimera Ant Arc had me like...

This, but also the episode like right before or after this with the Royal Guards being really fucking weird about reviving the King for like twenty whole minutes was soooooo bad.

The fight between Meruem and Netero was amazing though. That whole episode was unreal.

edit - also

me and my buddies jumped off the couch for THE ZONE

The original broadcast version of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross episode 11, "First Contact". Macross always had some hit or miss animation (That's part of the charm!), but oh boy, it gets really bad here. It's clearly unfinished, with either a massive amount of in-between frames missing everywhere or just straight up moving the camera around a single cel and hoping you didn't notice. To make matters worse, this was a rather important episode to the plot, as the title might have tipped you off to. They eventually went back and fixed it up, but yeah. It's available as an extra on the DVD/BD sets, if you're really curious.

Bonus points because it's the episode where Max beats up a Zentradi soldier and disguises his Valkyrie. He's just that good at piloting.

I suggest some of you look up what infamous means. Its not something you thought was dark or cool or whatever.

As for recent infamous anime episodes the anime original finale for Kuma Miko was infamous for taking its central character and breaking her with imagined public abuse and then her father figure telling her it was actually real and that she should just give up her dreams. Pretty good show up to that point.

Wikipedia summary

Machi reluctantly returns to do the contest after overhearing Yoshio saying the future of the village depends on her. She successfully completes it and wins a special award, but hallucinates that the cheering audience is throwing rocks at her. Back at home Machi, still terrified by the imagined attack, decides to abandon her dream of living in the city. Natsu hugs her and tells her she never has to think about anything difficult again. The episode ends with Machi more childish and ignorant of technology than ever before while playing with Natsu.

Probably one of the worst received/rated finales in anime history. The mangaka publicly expressed his displeasure (which never happens) and apologized for it (he didn't bother to approve it ahead of time). One of the script writers also deleted his twitter account from all the abuse he got.

Does End of Evangelion count? It's basically two episodes merged into a movie.

Yes and its a great example because its highly controversial and polarizing.

Electric Soldier Porygon is probably the most publicly infamous anime episode.

Also a good example. Gave like 700+ viewers in Japan health issues including epileptic seizures and was banned from airing again (and thus was never aired in the US).

Well since people are being super strict about infamous....

One of the shows within the Monogatari franchise has an infamous toothbrush scene... Yea.

No, do not be stupid enough to post any GIFs of it.

Last episode of Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu S2 probably counts considering all it retroactively made the entire anime worse or even impossible to recommend for a lot of people due to certain revelations coming to light...
