It is probably too early to do this, but let's place bets. Troll 2 sits at Rotten Tomatoes at 6%.

Will the Emoji Movie place higher or lower?

still kinda lost lol
A bad Simpsons episode?

One of the BEST Simpsons episodes.

Poochie is a "hip" character added to spice up Itchy and Scratchy with lots of 90's 'tude.

At the end of the episode they write Poochie out of the show and he says "I have to go now, my planet needs me." and he floats off screen with an animation cell and it says "Poochie died on his way back to his home planet."

Looking for meaning in GAF
whats The Poochie?
It's a Simpsons reference.

There was one episode where the directors of a cartoon in the simpsons universe tried to make their cartoon better by inserting a new character named Poochie. The makers tried way, way too hard to make Poochie hip and cool to the kids by cramming as many cool stereotypes into the character as possible, and as a result he was an awful character that had to be hastily killed off and never spoken of again.

So Poochie is pretty much the poster child of executives trying to shoehorn something "cool" into something that didn't need it, and failing spectacularly.

Wasn't Sony Pictures basically betting everything on this movie?

RIP

Yeah, this was one of the films they said would play a factor on whether Sony just sells the studio off IIRC.

They were also banking on this being successful enough to spawn a franchise too.
Given it's modest $50M budget and projected $30M OW, they have a good shot at it unfortunately. Unless audiences are smart enough to vote with their wallets.

That's the budget for this movie?

Yeah it'll do...fine but I don't think it's gonna be the mega hit they want it to be

It's a kids movie, I'd bet on it still getting a good return. Despite being a fucking abomination.

Why do people think saying "it's a kids movie" means it's okay to be bad?

The Lion King was a kids movie, Fantasia was a kids movie and so were many other things.

Being a kids movie isn't an excuse to be terrible because not all kids are stupid.

Still stand by my prediction that this will make serious bank.

yeah. cheap emoji merchandise is everywhere and my sister's little kids are drawn to random youtube family vlogs and shit with emojis all in the videos.

sure, kids crap doesnt have to be awful if the companies care about what they're making. Like all you really need is cheap CG characters, flashing colors, and stupid songs.

Havent seen the movie but i dont get why everyone is so pissed and knew from the beginning it sucked. The fact that emoji's are the characters is just a detail. The story could have been great/inspiring/etc. I hope the reviewers were a bit open minded, cause if they already went in with a 'meh' face... that's just stupid

Ah okay lol. Glad the writers responded accordingly to the hate it received

IMDB summary:
Gene, a multi-expressional emoji, sets out on a journey to become a normal emoji.

Great message! Why possess any form of depth and diversity when you can just be this one static thing??

(Yes I know I thought about that more than anyone working on this movie did shut up!)

Not to be a crank but: are kids a lot more boring nowadays? Like, parents in here saying their kids want to see this, that their kids "love emoji." What? They're fucking smiley faces. They're not a thing to be interested in. I'm generally pro-device and all but do the majority of children deadass have no interests outside of their phones? I'm well aware that the vast majority of what I liked as a child was simple-minded and dumb but it wasn't so cravenly empty and generic. This isn't even to defend the following movies because I haven't seen them yet but I'm having trouble getting into the head of a child who walks up to a multiplex this weekend and requests a ticket to a movie about apps instead of one about apes with assault rifles or space cops. Okay, one caveat: I can totally imagine being 12 and buying a ticket to this, then sneaking into Atomic Blonde or Baby Driver. But wanting to see this, I can't even--maybe are doomed.

I really wish the Sony pictures email hack happened again so we could see what they were internally thinking and messaging each other when planning this movie.

I'm not advocating for hacking them pls
Also isn't the movie then sort of promoting jailbreaking your phone so your emojis can be who they want to be?

James Cordon, I don't know why I don't like you but this film isn't helping things.

Well, yep, there it is.

So I wonder if he succeeds and the message is "Know your place and stay there" or if he winds up "infecting" the rest of the emoji world and they all become able to feel other emotions.

If it's anything like that Spider-Man email it's probably a bunch of idiots going "WE CAN TIE IN REAL APPS!! 3 BILLION WW TAKE!! EMOJI SHARED UNIVERSE!!"

This movie is tracking 20-30 million OW and it cost 50 million to make. Worldwide it should do +100 million and be in the black. Can't wait for Emoji 2: more shit show in 2019!

No, I mean, that's not why...

Poochie appears in just that one episode and it's a joke about those types of characters. The Simpsons didn't actually insert Poochie into Itchy & Scratchy XD.

I feel bad for the animators and artists that had to work on this. Imagine having to wake up to spend hours of your life working on the Emoji movies.
