The POTUS just said things should be voted on by a 60 vote threshold, after just saying that they should be voted on by 51 vote threshold, which was made in response to a recent 51 threshold vote.

My brain hurts.

Well, whatever the reason, McCain-who-voted-no is infinitely better than McCain-who-voted-yes; it almost feels like select minority would have preferred to have him vote yes with the way they are speaking about the guy.

Collins and Murkowski need to get more support too - because they have been firm NO votes all along, even with asshole GoP harassing them and threatening to defund their state budgets.
Also, much bigger props to these two if this is true.

Well, this seems hopeful. And if I were American, I would (temporarily) praise any GOP member that votes against bullshit. You guys need the moderates to keep this nonsense in check, so I personally think the best way to go is protest and support on a case by case basis.

So just to be clear, McCain's buddies planned it out with him so that they wouldn't have to vote no (and thus have Trump/Fox News/etc talk shit on them), correct? I mean, Lindsey actually went on camera and said he'd vote no without the promise of a committee from Paul Ryan... then voted yes anyway.

I gotta think half the GOP senate didn't want to vote yes, but McCain was willing to be the fall guy because he has the political capital (for various reasons).

I think GAF jumped to conclusions on the scathing criticism of him, because it was obviously his strategy to vote on the motion to proceed and then kill the bill if McConnell wouldn't bring up a decent repeal and replace plan. Many people didn't even understand it was more of a procedural vote. However, they were right to criticize him for even coming back to DC after a diagnosis like that in the first place.

I am supposed to be grateful for the brinksmanship that McCain played here? That I had to stay up past midnight fighting tears because I don't know the future of my wife with hepatitis or my son with autism.

I am glad he voted no this time. But he also brought it back from the dead and voted yes on worse bills. people think he did well because he is playing it like a game? no, fuck that.

Amazing that the Senator who lost the presidency to Obama is the vote that protected Obama’s signature law

It's almost like he's been a trust fund baby his entire life and grew up with a skewed view on what the real world actually is. It's almost like he doesn't actually relate to the people who voted for him, and doesn't actually care about them at all.

This should be posted on the door of every Trump voter.

It's really sick that people had to beg their Senators not to kill them, and 49 Senators still voted yes, which is to me the real story. It's unconscionable.

No, he's just trying to move the goalposts to 50 for a win is all. Those tweets this morning merely imply that he wants the failed versions of repeal bills that require 60 to have their chance at getting 50 votes. He is definitely not advocating anything to have 60 votes, and is stumping that his great agenda need only 50 going forward, especially now that tax reform is the next fight.

The ire directed at McCain was and still is valid. This could have ended days ago. Don't let one moment of clarity wash away all the sins he's committed since.

The man would still vote to strip healthcare from millions if only it was done in the way he approved. He pretty much said so in the statement he released.

Yep. He's still ready to fuck your healthcare over. Just not that way.

Fuck McCain. Just not today.

So McCain's legacy as a maverick will remain at least a tiny bit intact after this, right? Particularly if repeal doesn't come before Dems regain control of the legislative branch and/or the presidency?

McCain has proven himself not to be trustworthy in the past. He deserved some criticism and scrutiny. Even though he did vote the moral choice in the end, it was a lot of theatrics and grandstanding. A lot of us were terrified. My wife has a serious preexisting condition and the ACA is critical to my family.

Love all the 'sane' takes coming out from Senate republicans right now.

"Not surprised, this was a horrible process." "We should have never tried to push this through on a partisan basis". "We shouldn't have tried to get this through on reconciliation, it was too large for that", etc.

Yet you still voted for it.

No arguments here. But right now bipartisan is preferable to GOP partisan politics even if less than ideal.
I get the sentiment; all this partisan theatre has been revolting to behold. But grass is always greener on the other side until you turn grass over. Having seen what happens when Congress agrees on something (media monopoly, permanent police state, full-blown global meltdown), to me it's like, "I've been sitting in this traffic jam for three hours and I'm sick of it; gosh wouldn't a kaiju attack be awesome right about now." This really sucks, but I'll take gridlock.

As horrifying as it was, this Red State Wedding was in fact the best possible outcome for America for what we have right now. Anything truly bipartisan means getting McConnell on board, which could only be worse.

To those that are championing McCain and lambasting those who are apprehensive; you do realize that had this not gone through budget reconciliation he would have voted for it?

I appreciate him doing the right thing here, I appreciate Collins and Murkowski much more. They have been steadily against this from the get go.

Probably posted before but this is amazing

1. Being mad at dems and people for celebrating

2. "Congratulations, the healthy people are paying for the sick people."

It's almost like the people don't know how insurance works.

How do they think insurance works?

Do they think that when money is taken from their paycheck for insurance, it sits in a little lockbox with their name on it and when they get sick, money is withdrawn from that box?

Fucking simpletons.

You linked to the thread where he did something stupid. Surely you meant to link to something where people criticised him wrongly?

It's the thread about him coming back to vote so I'm pretty sure it's the right thread; where most of the responses were of this nature:
Fuck McCain.
is this a ronald reagan moment where mccain comes in, gives a speech, and everyone overwhelmingly votes to repeal obamacare
I kind of blame all y'all who wished him a speedy recovery tbh.
Something ironic about an affluent white man who can spend money for eternity to survive a terminal disease but is likely to vote to make sure other people don't get his level of privilege. Makes you darkly wish nature would work faster...
No this is a I'm voting to take away healthcare from millions of people months before I pass away moment
No, it is important. It is just more important to fuck millions over.
Remember when people were saying we shouldn't say mean things about a guy who's trying to fuck over millions on his deathbed.
After receiving taxpayer funded health care he wants to deny health care to many of those same taxpayers.
go fuck yourself.
Thank goodness this hero is feeling well enough from his completely subsidized healthcare (not that he needs it since he's a millionaire) to make it across the country to help snatch healthcare from millions of his countrymen. What a wonderful, honest, upstanding man John McCain is to be so hellbent on his civic duty.
Fuck McCain and anyone who thought he deserved any respect.
Like Willis Reed.
Except instead of playing in a basketball game he's robbing poor people of healthcare.
And that's all just from the first page.

I hate the man, and that will never change. I will not change what I say about him with one minor exception.

Today he voted no, a completely unexpected move that no one saw coming. His vote just saved millions of Americans from losing their insurance and put the GOP on the spot. This moment belongs to him, and I'm willing to swallow my pride, fear, and anger for a moment to say "Thank you, Senator McCain."

I wish for his death to be painless and peaceful, and hope he spends his remaining time with his friends and family rather than a dusty old office.

Bipartisanship was dead and buried the moment McConnell declared that the Republican goal was to make Obama a one term president. The government was never intended to function under threat of sabotage.

This. McConnell will go down in history as one of the most despicable partison hacks ever. Putting party before country and the people.

Fuck this turle-man abomination.

Yup. Just takes saving millions of lives. I guess I should up my standards.

Who helped endanger those lives in the first place?

So even allowing discussion on whether people should have taken their healthcare away is an okay thing to do?

I mean his vote led to last night's panic inducing vote where he ultimately came in and voted No. If he voted No the other day, last night wasn't going to happen so...
