Ys Community Thread | "Do you know the name Adol Christin?"

I don't mind Yunica. She's basically just a female power fantasy, like how Toal and Adol are male power fantasies.

I liked how Roy was included in the plot just so he could die and give Yunica a reason to fight. Usually it's a girl dying for the sake of the male protagonist's characterization.

How "playable" is Ys Origins in Vita?

I'm scared that some of it's bosses could be harder on an small screen, and also I don't want to beat the game in all levels to get nightmare mode, is that lock in the PS versions?

It *is* playable if you can cope with 25fps with quite substantial frame drops whenever the screen gets filled with enemies and effects.

Is that Sean Chiplock voicing Hummel? He sounds exactly like Rean.

Yep.

I'm kind of irked that they completely mispronounced Laxia's name (should be like "Laksha") and maybe Hummel's too ("hue-mel" based off the kana, but it's a little more ambiguous since JP doesn't have quite the same "hu" sound they're using anyway, so it's possible this could've been the original intent).

I wonder if we'll see Celceta ported, seems logical since it will be the only modern(ish) Ys game missing from Steam after Seven and VIII hit.

Gameplay still looks nice. I hope it gets a good price. That's what killed Ys VI at the started.
$15 would be ideal for this release since that's the base price on PSN. Regardless of the new work put into the port, it's one of modern XSEED's historic localizations, and there's no reason to charge $20 when Zwei II's already gonna target that and Ys VIII's on the horizon at a higher price. Besides, Tom himself said this port's a (well-programmed) quickie meant to fill the gap a new localization would have breached this year.

I can't give myself the forces to finish Memories of Celceta

I unlocked frieda, but at this point I'm really burned out with the game

Think Ark of Napitism will get a discount near VII's steam release? Would love to grab them together.

Bought Ys I, II, Oath and Origin during the last sale and devoured them. Hooked on the series now.

I made the mistake of playing Origin and Felghana first. Everything after those games was kinda a step down, even if I enjoyed aspects of them.

It would be nice, but I'm not counting on it.

They do get discounted quite a few times per year.

One thing that I hate about the combat of Celceta, is that isn't as fast as the older games, where you could dispatch an enemy with a few strikes and then move.

Also, even though the game is based around the flash techniques, I never truly feel that is worthy to learn the timings of the field enemies, specially with how easy is to heal or even revive your characters.

In the other hand, I kinda love the grinding in this game, but also I feel that grindning isn't something than an YS game should have

???

That's present in Celceta too. Especially as you progress and if you're exploiting weakness types.

I think the party system games feel the fastest to me because of the horizontal movement options available to you and how good the auto-target system is, on top of just how much more powerful skills are compared to the ones in the Napishtim games.

Also, even though the game is based around the flash techniques, I never truly feel that is worthy to learn the timings of the field enemies, specially with how easy is to heal or even revive your characters.

Yeah, but that's mostly because there's so little reward for doing so. I think, generally, Flash Guard is best used for multi hitting moves and quick, successive hits, and Flash Move his best used for big swings with long recovery times to extend that period of vulnerability on the enemy.

Most field monsters don't really have either sort of attack, and die so quickly that the crit bonus or slow motion isn't really that valuable. So there's not really much benefit to using the techniques on most field enemies outside of style points.

I don't think this is a design flaw. Just how one would logically apply the techniques to the game.

In the other hand, I kinda love the grinding in this game, but also I feel that grindning isn't something than an YS game should have

I like it too. I don't like when people try and define what Ys "should be" so I try not to do it myself. It's an element of the games now that I rather enjoy so I just leave it at that.

I remember when we got actual jdk Band albums and concert DVDs, or even a recurring livestream with some members just chilling and playing acoustic versions of tracks. Why is Falcom cheaping out with jdk Band these days, let alone arrange albums?

XSEED releasing Ys SEVEN really close to Ys VIII release. I imagine it'll hurt them more than it hurts NISA, considering it's a mobile port versus a brand new game.

More than that, releasing two games in the series within less than a month of each other just doesn't seem intelligent. But then XSEED seems to follow a dump it on the store when it's ready and don't worry about the details philosophy for game releases.

Releasing it before VIII is the ideal scenario as playing VIII first will make Seven seem vastly inferior in comparison.

Eh, they're progressing, they aren't releasing games in the middle of Steam sales anymore.
But yeah, I guess they wanted to release it before Ys VIII.

Releasing afterward, during the holiday season on PC digital marketplaces, would be asking for disaster, whereas some will at least look at Ys Seven if they're already into the PC Ys games and get it later if they have to. VIII's impending release will bring more attention to Seven and perhaps not cannibalize sales too hard if XSEED takes advantage of these upcoming weeks to promote the port.

The problem with VIII, more than being new, is that it's likely good/great enough to turn people off from trying Celceta given that game's bad word-of-mouth. XSEED might just skip it altogether unless they can find a way to deal with lower sales (like, IDK, better social media presence/reminders).

Who gives celceta bad word of mouth, I will fite them 1v1 right now.

To be fair it ran pretty bad at times. But a pc version shouldn't have those issues. The big thing is 8 looks to be a massive improvement over the Seven and Celceta formula so going back to it might be a bit rough and a hard sell

Definitely true, won't fight anyone over that, but it was a great game.

It certainly is.

Enjoyed it even more than Seven, eventhough it was somewhat easier. I got into the series with Seven on psp. Played everything else on vita later. Loved it so much I bought the silver anniversary box of Celceta with that sweet compilation CD of various Ys arrangements. Started Celceta and was disgusted with the performance in first hour, but still had a great time with it.

I went to PC after playing Origin, which is my current favorite in the series.

Celceta's my favorite game in the series, and I don't need to crap on the other games in the series to say that. I loved mapping/exploring the world, the party was great, and it's got one of my favorite soundtracks in the series. Barring the performance issues, it's just about perfect in my book.

People like exploring in bad games all the time look at no man's sky, at least the latter doesn't bog down with tons of boring characters talking about a cookie cutter plot.

My problems with Celceta's story usually aren't based around the premise itself (and what that develops into), but how uneven character development and plot consistency gets towards the end. Seven aims for actually predictable boring tropes, but has more effective twists and doesn't have to both satisfy players of older Ys IV games and provide something more ambitious. Regardless, I enjoy Celceta's story more even when it trips on itself more often. Both games have nice towns and NPCs worth checking in on.

The lore itself also expands nicely in Seven and Celceta, though it looks like VIII goes crazy towards endgame.

Oh because the Ys games are known for their deep plots. At least this game had characters, and "cookie cutter" is definitely subjective. Celceta's plot was simple, but it was fun. And I enjoyed the gameplay too. I enjoyed all the Ys games, but Celceta just occupies a space for me none of the other games quite captured.

I am gonna get Seven on PC for sure. Which difficulty setting would you recommend? I played all the Steam Ys on Normal and found them decently challenging (almost never grinded except for one time or two where I felt stupidly underpowered), but I found Celceta generally too easy, especially the bosses, with the exception of that one optional mini-boss (at the north of the map, forgot what it's called, a unicorn kind of thing IIRC?).

I played Seven on Hard and aside from the bosses (massive HP sponges), found that generally alright, probably a step underneath Felghana on Normal. Celceta on Normal was embarrassingly easy and I wish I had played it on Hard.

Probably Hard. Also, don't worry about the bosses' HP, they're not "massive HP sponges" as the post above says. They have tons of HP but your DPS is also high to match.

Hard for a standard play through, nightmare if you want to max out the gathering / crafting side of things. Bosses are not hp sponges if you use your abilities/ults properly as the damage output gets insanely high eventually

Yeah it captured the bottom spot if we ignore ys5 snes

Ys7 did what celceta tried to do better, and 7 came first. Celceta's main gimmick of exploring a big area went out the window once you past the river area where it was basically super linear to end game.

Why are you so angry that someone enjoys Celceta?

Going to be another xStream focused on Ys Seven PC this Thursday for those who want to check it out.

I think the dub will be fine. Even cold steel sounded pretty terrible in the trailers, but the end result was probably one of my favorite examples of good dubbing in localization.
