I know we usually quote the change from AssCreed to AssCreed 2 as the biggest improvement between entries in a single series, but I'd like to offer up two more suggestions on games that improved drastically between entries.
Grand Theft Auto 2 to Grand Theft Auto 3
This is a game that essentially created the sandbox genre as we now know it. Going from a top down, crime simulator to a 3d, open world black-comedy made all the difference, and brought the game to the mainstream. Had it not been for this entry, I'd wager that GTA would not still be around today.
Wolfenstein to Wolfenstein: The New Order
Wolfenstein was a huge misstep for a franchise with roots going to the earliest days in PC gaming. Under the control of Activision, it essentially was a COD clone with some supernatural abilities, but with none of the fun that sounds like it would entail. When id and Bethesda reclaimed the franchise from Activision, it would've been simple to just reboot and forget that Wolfenstein ever happened. They didn't, however, and while The New Order is a continuation of the storyline, it is a completely revamped experience. As someone who adored Wolf 3d, Spear of Destiny, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I was very disappointed with Wolfenstein and had written off the series. I'm glad that Bethesda was able to right the ship.
So, what are all of your suggestions for the biggest improvement between entries of a given franchise?
