Xenoblade Chronicles 2 previews

I'm excited but I still think that the graphics are crap, I don't know how to explain it. It's like if the resolution was very low and there seems to be some color dithering that makes everything sort of blurry. They better improve that cause this ain't XCX levels at all.

The game is better looking than XCX though.

Game looks prettier than XCX, hands down.

Also appears to run at 1280x720 in docked at the moment to the untrained eye. That might increase but it is identical to XCX.

Actually, now that it's being mentioned, have they even released direct feed screenshots, or has everything been taken from streams and trailers?

It's not even close to me. I put over 120 hours into XCX and this shitty stream footage of XC2 looked better. I vastly prefer this artstyle.

It's not even just the artstyle, I do like the art of XCX, but even from a technical point of view, it's better than XCX.

Not that I'm aware of, which is par for course for Nintendo. Most of the media they release for their games is of poor IQ.

Yes, the game is definitely a refinement of XCX visually.

At the end of the day the Switch isn't that much beefier than the Wii U. Don't expect a full generational improvement, but more like GameCube to Wii for most games. Splatoon to Splatoon 2 is a good example.

That's just reality when dealing with the mobile hardware Nintendo chose.

Some pics from e3, at least

Switch is pretty beefy for what it is. Handheld alone is supposed to be >Wii U while the docked mode is around >2x more powerful.
Splatoon 2 shows a lot of improvements on the graphical side with real time lighting instead of baked. Resolution is also higher on top of that.
XC2 should probably be at least adaptive resolution like Zelda or Splatoon by the time it comes out. Should be noticeable once it actually releases

Let's see what's ne ... oh, the bashing of Xeno X to justify the awful anime characters in XC2 is in full force ... never mind then.

Oh, the bashing of Xeno 2 character design because I don't like anime style and fantasy theme

So we need every main character to look like a bad ass?

His costume fits well with the type of occupation he does.

The music, exploration, and gameplay look to be on point. Plus character models were never Xenoblade's strong point so I don't know what people expected. I also can't believe people think the story will be simple and generic. There is definitely gonna be a twist considering it's a Takahashi game.

Has Takahashi ever made a game without multiple big twists?

so in the stream at the end one of the guys tries to use the portable screen as the justification for the big ass hud icons 'so you can see it'

I hope they give you options to minimize the hud for docked play

You'd think that dynamic resizing of HUD elements when changing from docked to portable mode and vice versa would be something Nintendo made as easy as possible...

Yeah they really take up a lot of the screen. I can't see them giving you a minimize option (maybe on/off?), if they increase the game resolution while docked they should be smaller though

I still can't get over the art direction for the characters. It's really clean and well-rendered but it's just not appealing at all. It actually repels me from wanting to look at previews and such for the game. I wish they had kept the Xenogears artist for this game after XCX because his art would shine in this form, as opposed to trying to adapt it for semi-realism like that game did.

Also, the UI is WAY too busy. XCX had the problem of having elements scaled down too much, this is the opposite and stuff is way too big.

The reason why the artist changed was because the newer artist art is easier to translate in game I believe.

Also people are too hanged up on the character design. I get that it may not appeal to peoples taste, but damn the hate for Xenoblade's designs has been a ongoing thing.

I don't understand people who think this game is ugly, aside from character design which is more of a preference, the world looks absolutely amazing. The new area they showed off at gamescom is beautiful.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has better character design than Xenoblade Chronicles X, Tales of Berseria, Lost Odyssey, and dozens of other RPGs I could mention.

Skipped through the video and man, that looks pretty underwhelming visually.

Looks like a PS2 game, and not an impressive one at that.

Why does that matter to people that don't like the character design for this game tho

Because it's weird how this game gets so much hate for its character designs on GAF.

Looks like a PS2 game, and not an impressive one at that.

How is it weird? People just... don't like it. Seems pretty straightforward to me. I'm guessing it's a very common criticism, hence why some of you are annoyed hearing about it repeatedly, but I don't really see what's weird about it, regardless of whether or not it's "better" than other games in that department.

Its been a reoccurring thing for this series.

It doesn't help it sometimes ruins Xenoblade threads. Some Xenoblade 2 threads have been derailed by it already.

I guess bad character design is a reoccurring thing for this series too lol

I respectfully disagree, but you do remember that a lot of XBX and ToB pre-release discussion was also about the awful character designs of those games? Weird comparison to make.

You and a few others can not like them. Just pointing out that many of us do like them.

It's too bad because there was a lot else to talk about, but inevitably it goes back to complaints about sci-fi fantasy anime character designs.

Well, people could stop bashing both games for their artstyles, it's not a joy to read about the "awful anime characters" everytime i enter this thread. Everyone prefers a style and we could leave it at this. If people bash the new style others will explain the flaws of the last.

Well, from the little of I've seen of this game (Pyra, MC's pants) and XCX (that girl's face tho), I am admittedly not surprised. That said, yea, I get it, sometimes people just bring it up too many times, and starts to grate. Anyways, I don't feel like being one of those people, and I'm likely to get this regardless, so back to lurking I go lol

I love Xenoblade. The only other JRPG I have bought, within the last decade, is Persona 5 (and Soulsborne if that counts). I hate Xenoblade's character designs as well as the designs in the games you mentioned. However, I'm a big Nintendo fan, and got into Xenoblade for no other reason than Nintendo made it, and I heard it was fantastic. My point being, I think you'll find a good number of people like myself, who just don't like it, and don't care about the quality of other JRPGs, because we don't play them.

The only problem I have with Xenoblade 2 art is the gear of the main dude which shouldn't be problem since it will be change in the first hour.

But that's got to be pretty rare because, after all, Xenoblade is a niche JRPG series.

really sad to see Xenoblade fans crap on X so much in here sheesh

You guys did not deserve X

Atleast XC2 is what the franchise established itself as.

I don't know if his outfit can change.

I think part of the problem is that people (like me) were expecting the simplified character style would at least allow for smoother game performance, actual cutscene direction, and really impressive vistas. So far, the performance is looking bad, but the streams have been pretty careful about not showing off cutscenes (though to be fair the trailers have looked fine in this regard), and the camera angle the guy was using to demonstrate the game in the latest stream just wasn't very inspiring to actually watch (but that's fine, he was trying to demonstrate the battle system, and we did get a couple of nice looks around but obviously they won't want to show everything in the area off).

I can respect what 1 managed to pull off given the constraints of the medium, and X's were hilariously ugly in a way that made them noteworthy, but 2's are just sort of... well... generic C-list anime game on the Vita, at this point.
