Secret of Mana Remake (PC/Vita/PS4, February 15th, 2018) Trailer

Too bad it's digital for NA, I really don't like paying $40 for a digital release. Made an exception for SoM and now I've got a Randi PSN avatar to display until release. The artwork is fine, and about the level of detail I expect. Co-op on PS4 is a much bigger deal to me (never had the SNES multitap) with arranged soundtrack and (hopefully) bug fixes and QoL improvements.

What's there to be sarcastic about? I honestly just remembered the same reaction because I saw a bunch of ALBW footage again today during the Zelda concert.
Oh OK. I thought you might have been sarcastic since as far as I know ALBW has been well-received. But if people had a problem with how it looks compared to ALttP, I'm certainly with them.
Really? I absolutely cannot fathom that.

FF6 mobile is a jumbled mess of disjointed tilesets, sprites that don't fit with them and 3D models that fit even less.
All of that is true.

Still not as offensively bad as this remake. *shrugs*

Anyone from Japan-GAF wanna sell me a used blue Vita from Mandrake/HardOFF for $100? Kinda need one for this.

40$? Dang. Going by the look of it I though this was going to cost like 9-12$ and even then I would have got it later in a sale.

Amazon Japan has the Vita and PS4 versions up for preorder. Their preorder bonus is a reprint of the original Super Famicom instruction manual! I'm in for that.

The Steam page claims that there's new content and that the gameplay has been reworked to "realize a modern action RPG."

I'm honestly not really sure what to expect now. It also confirms that it'll be $39.99.

I think this looks honestly worse than the FF6 mobile version, as bad as that one was. At least FF6 still had decent battle backgrounds and enemy sprites.

To make a food analogy, this SoM remake is, at worst, a bland soup; FF6 remake is a paella with prawns, carrots, eggs, banana peels, gummy bears and an assortment of insect parts.

What's wrong with $40,Game short or something?

I think people wanted it to be the price point of Adventures which was 15 or so. However, this has a complete rearrange of the OST and fully voiced in Japanese/English, so it makes sense it costs a bit more.

The Steam page probably is just echoing the main page.
3D Graphics - Revamped visuals for the entire game; a vivid, Mana-filled world rebuilt in 3D!
Upgraded Gameplay - The original system has been reworked in an effort to realize a modern action RPG with improved gameplay.

Also the Japanese site emphasizes the new voices, complete rearrange of the OST supervised by Kikuta, and reproduced talk events.

Still not as offensively bad as this remake. *shrugs*

We've seen like ten seconds of an in development flying sequence/main character sample and 5 screencaps and it's offensively bad? If anything the reaction you have to that little of the game is worse.

I have to say. While I say I want this, it's not going to be at the 40 dollar mark. I'll pay 25-26 when it gets down there.

Yeah, it's a little weird... I thought maybe they'd do a physical limited like for Lost Sphear. That could still be in the cards maybe. If not though, I think I may have to import.

Nothing spectacular about the graphics. It looks low budget. I never played Secret of Mana, so no idea what to expect.
The pre-purchase dlc is cute haha.
Make sure to preorder for that... swimsuit DLC...

Might pick it up on Steam or PS4. I'm taking its only a digital release only right??
Does this game play similar to Chrono Trigger?

For now, yes. The west is digital only while Japan gets physical PS4/Vita and digital with a CE as well.

Today I remembered the same negative response when Nintendo announced a sequel to Link to the Past and it looked like this:

Well... it was kind of a weak looking game. I don't really think people were wrong about those early criticisms; it's the kind of game you enjoy in spite of its humble visuals, not because of them. But it wasn't billed specifically as a remake and it wasn't released on the PS4. If ALBW hadn't been a new game but instead a straightforward remake of ALTTP and released on Switch this year with those same visuals, that would be more comparable.

Samus Returns is vaguely similar to this, where a 3D remake of a 2D game has underwhelming visuals, but that game was never remembered for strong art in the way this game was, plus they kind of led with the radical gameplay changes when announcing it. If they were going to go the budget route for this, they should have made the gameplay stuff known up front instead of just introducing it with some weak screenshots. It's kind of hard not to be disappointed when all we know about the game is that it looks like a budget mobile title.

Doesn't look /ugly/ but it's still clearly a downgrade coming from the original... Lame. I was happy I could play this "officially" at last but guess I'll pass.

Well, if anything it reminded me the original exists and I have yet to play it, so it's fine!

$40 digital only too... Haha, never change Square.

Hopefully this gets us closer to an official release of Seiken Densetsu 3 in the west.

Any idea of the JP physical release could contain both language tracks and translations? I'd feel better spending $40+ if I was able to actually own something for it.

Art style looks horrible, like cell phone quality poor and is ridiculously priced for such cheap production values.

It's likely priced like this because of the full voice additions and rearranged score. If it were barebones it'd probably have been closer to the Adventures of Mana price of around 15-20 bucks. I'm kind of uncertain why people are complaining so heavily about this style. It literally looks like an SNES game in 3D. What happened before however was that when making Adventures of Mana they were debating to use 2D or 3D and settled on 3D for use in mobile along with using the assets for potential remakes of SD2 (this) and SD3.

PS4 can play most games unless they are locked. It's pretty rare that any are locked but it has happened. I suspect the Japanese version will have English voice/subtitles since the English digital version has the Japanese voice/subtitles.

From the Japanese site, the co-op for PC/PS4 is offline and for Vita it's ad hoc.

I don't think so, when I go directly to the site, the option to add to cart is still there. I don't have a Japan account so I wasn't able to try and place a test order but I might give it a shot later today. Otherwise I might have to try placing an order through a different proxy.

Argh, FromJapan couldn't place my order for the PS4 CE, only the PSV CE. Buyee cancelled my order for the PS4 CE claiming "There is a purchase quantity limit". What the heck is going on with this CE... Even Nin-Nin-Games is sold out. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Hmm, it's possible those retailers are being blocked off after buying for other people? Have you tried ZenMarket? It's possible SE only lets them get so many at a time.

Haven't tried them before, but will give it a shot. Thanks for the tip!

I usually used FromJapan but ZenMarket was nice on the few occasions I used them for recently. Hopefully they can get you your order! If not, I think there are a few other places that do middleman services like Noppin or Shopping Mall Japan. I'd suggest Tenso too but I think they are the ones that run Buyee.

Exactly. Though I wouldn't even call SoM bland, just not fancy.

I think the best way to describe it is probably "simple". It's not really super detailed or anything but it's probably what it would've looked like had they had the chance to make the game with 3D assets back then. It's odd to see such criticism toward this though... what exactly did people expect? I kind of want to see examples of what they wanted to be done with this remake.

people gotta be mad about something, i guess

It just could have been handled better, they could have invested more into it and gave it a look similar to Legend of Mana for example, which had a very distinct and artistic/painted look to it.

This doesn't look bad, it just looks very generic.

Hopefully this gets us closer to an official release of Seiken Densetsu 3 in the west.
Hopefully. Hopefully a $40 digital-only visual downgrade doesn't sell too poorly and then squeenix consequently decide that the west doesn't like Seiken Densetsu

Watched the trailer on Steam and my first thought was what have they done to one of my fave games on the SNES?! Not digging the art style at all, I would of straight up settled for a HD version of the original.

Hoping SE localise the Secret of Mana collection for the Switch because this remake is a huge NOPE from me.

I think it looks really nice in some screenshots. Definitely captures the spirit of the original.

I know many won't agree, but I found the original to be incredibly frustrating to play. I hope this has actual working hit detection, a camera that shows where you're going and sensible hitboxes. Feedback in the original just felt completely broken and ruined the game for me.

Even attempting co-op multiple times with friends reaffirmed how much I can't get over those issues, so I hope this remake irons them out and I can finally enjoy the game.

That one screenshot is my only hope for this remake.

Even though it's 3D, but if it still plays as the original, I'm in.
