It's a deeply flawed game that will not stand the test of time as other open world games and Zelda sequels address the glaring issues with dungeons, story, rewards, progression/pacing, and difficulty. It's the same reason a game like the original Animal Crossing will never be remembered as subsequent sequels vastly improve on the formula with much more meaningful features and substance despite how novel it was at the time. The game will forever be pigeon holed as a less than stellar open world game that lags behinds it's successors but is so far removed from its predecessors that original fans won't care either.

BoTW had the best open world I've ever played tho

Why? It's a game that resonated deeply with a lot of people. How could you fault anyone for revering a game that stimulates such a profound personal reaction?

I don't get the "Actually you only think you like this game, trust me I'm smarter than you and you really hate it" posts

What? No one in the world thinks Bieber is better than Mozart except for teen girls. New games are frequently better than old games, while that is not the case with music. It's a nonsensical comparison.

Besides, you just made the argument that WoW should be on the list simply because it's popular. In that case of course Bieber would be on the music list as well along with Nickleback and Adele.

I don't think so. Half of the top 10 are games within the last 10 yrs. Half of them are decent, but not gamebreaking or masterpieces within their own generation(maybe Dark Soul is the only one there that can be considered a masterpiece). I have no clue how HL2 and RE4 are up there when we are going by Edge's rules. I won't talk about BOTW being over-rated because like Justin, some fans will always love the game no matter what.

WoW has a decade of gameplay.
Even if we are going to discount its mainstream appeal and historical significance to the gaming industry, WoW would be a top 100 game.
WoW Vanilla would have made that list or even BC or even WotLK.
They put SC2 in for goodness sake...RTS in this time and era? Over WoW? Only the hardcore PC gamers still play RTS, and I am one of them, but I wouldn't touch SC2 in 2017.
Also, SC-BW still looks good and plays well, so I have no clue what Edge is smoking to put SC2 on this list while they pretend to ignore their rules.

Just so we know that you're a credible time traveler, can you name a few past instances where you've been completely out of touch with the critical/popular consensus, and, later, been proven right?

Photos of you riding on the shoulders of a crowd are encouraged.

When I see F-Zero GX appear on these lists randomly after many years of not being on them I just shake my head. Where were ya'll when the game came out and needed sales.

BOTW will deserve every award its gonna get. Nintendo was smart to release the story DLC during holidays/end of the year to remind people how great it is.

P good list (besides a really bad FF choice) but christ..yeah give BoTW sometime to breathe before anointing it like that and I absolutely love the game to death.

People getting shocked at how much people love BoTW never gets old lol
Yeah, I have never really understood the anger over it. Good lord, lol.

People really enjoyed BotW and it's deserving of that #1 spot IMO.

I don't really get why Nier Automata is missing from that list, but regardless still a good list overall.

Also glad to see Dota 2 on the list.

I didn't played BoW, so I won't complain about being first, anyway the top ten is always something difficult to put down... but I will just say something about these on the quote
But overall too many Zelda games. And is probably the only N franchise I love and always play with joy, but these are too similar to include so many of them in a top 100... as if there were no game to include

I don't see any fighting game... no Street Fighter, no Virtua Fighter... or no Bubble Bobble, and so many games that deserve more to be remembered than reading 5 time the Zelda games on the list... :\

Red/Blue is pretty much a permanent fixture in my personal top 5. I know many other people would say the same.

Astounding to see Arkham Knight instead of either Asylum or City, and even Origins. Paul Dini's work, although certainly far from perfect in weaving gameplay and narrative, was leagues above the tripe delivered in Knight. Not to mention Rocksteady's assumption that repetitive 'tank' battles were good gameplay substitutes for the boss encounters in City and Origins. To top it off, the side quest plot threads started in City were resolved poorly.

I said the same about Twilight Princess. The pacing, aesthetics, attempt to replicate Ocarina of Time, and motion controls were all deeply flawed designs of the game that were largely ignored at the time (bar a select few media outlets). Ten years later Twilight Princess is more often than not ignored in top lists. Is it a good game, sure, but absoltely did not deserve the critical reception it received at the time.

I felt similarly towards Grand Theft Auto IV at launch at the time but I wasn't as vocal as I was more of a casual fan of the series and didn't feel I completely understood the genre and fan base.

I get your post is heavily loaded with sarcasm, but often times fans don't have the ability to step away from a title and constructively analyze what's actually wrong with a game and how that can impact its lasting appeal and legacy. To me games shouldn't even be eligible for these types of lists if they've been released in the past 2-3 years as they still carry massive amounts of confirmation bias and release hype.

I am pretty confident BOTW will stand the test of time simply due to the fact that this game has reinvigorated the stagnant and increasingly irrelevant Zelda series.Your opinion on dungeons, story, rewards, progression/pacing and difficult are all your opinions and I can't argue against preferences. But it should be noted that all of the things you dislike have been praised by critics and fans for the innovative approaches those elements took.

Those are good examples, and I appreciate the honest answer to a rather snarky question.

I would, however, submit that both of those games began showing cracks in consensus almost immediately.

They are great game, with the exception of GTA5. But they aren't masterpieces or can define a generation.
I already said DS is like the only masterpiece on that list since without it, no one would be saying the Dark Soul of XXYY.

And we are also going by Edge's rules. HL2 and RE4 shouldn't be on this list that high. They don't stand up in today environment with tight control and good graphic.
Why do they keep on breaking their rules? That is the only thing that I have found consistency within this list, just making up rules and putting in games that aren't up to today's standards and listing multiple games from the same IP.

I don't understand how you can put ICO ahead of Shadow of the Colossus. ICO has not aged well at all, including in the PS3 remaster. Shadow of the Colossus at its spot is whatever (personally my favorite game of all time but I know it's not for everyone) but having it below ICO is crazy.

Every game ever has flaws and we still love them and will continue to. Also it's easily among the best open world games I've played, MGSV is the only competitor I can think of.

Animal Crossing is not that relevant since each entry is basically the same thing with new improvements. Each Zelda game takes place in a completely different world and they usually have completely different hooks. You can judge each of them without the context of their predecessors.

That's like me saying Bleed is a top 100 game. You ever heard of Bleed? Yeah, you haven't. And honestly? You don't want to. You know why? Because who cares about Bleed. Not even a bad game, it's just who cares about it (no one does if you really needed the question answered, by yours truly).

Bleed 2 might be a top 100 game actually. That game is real solid.

It's worth mentioning that if this is like the last times Edge did a compilation book like this for the 100 greatest games, only one game per "series" is allowed in. Which is why you see FFXII alone.

"Series" being loosely defined - for example Mario World made it in in 2007 over Mario Bros or Mario Bros 3, but Yoshi's Island also made it in due to it being different enough despite technically being a 2D Mario game.

But F Zero GX was in the last list from 2015, and the list from 2007.

I hate this list.

Also pretty much every single pick of a title in a series franchise is wrong. Latest worst sequel or first game ignoring what came after that was improved upon by a lot.

Sure.
That is fine.
But they need a disclaimer stating that they are liars and pretending that their rules don't apply to them.
I have no clue why they even put such a weird list of conditions and rules but toss them away so quickly.
I guess rating 100 IPs is too hard for them.

Nobody can ever agree on these "top games of all time" lists, but as far as these go, this one is decent enough. BotW is honestly a great choice for number one, in my opinion.

I'd be much more interested in seeing individual top 100s, 50s or 25s from each of Edge's staffers than a single mixed-perspective top 100. I will say that putting something as new as Breath of the Wild at number 1 is a pretty bold look, even if I personally also see the game hanging with the best. It's just hard to make anything of a list where compromises were made and multiple opinions mixed. Give me your bio, your preferences, and your perspective, then let me see a single list representing only your opinion- that's way more valuable to look at and examine.

I could say this about any list of course, but...huh. Some very strange omissions for sure. No Castlevania other than SotN? The one game per series rule doesn't apply to that seeing as SotN is a completely different game from something like Super Castlevania IV or Rondo of Blood. No Contra at all? No love for shoot 'em ups or Beat 'em ups? Strange omissions indeed. For an outlet as professional as Edge I'd expect a wider variety of games.

Maybe Pokemon is a better example. They are unique titles with their own stories, features, monsters and gameplay designs yet often times make old games archaic by addressing major gameplay complaints such as battle speed, post game activities, easier access to competitive gaming, more elaborate storylines, etc.

My point was more that the next Zelda game will likely be very similar to BotW in scope but create a unique world that has more fleshed out characters, real dungeon designs, a more fine tuned weapon system, etc. and addresses the very obvious issues that BotW has. When that happens where does that leave BotW in relative terms to the series? It's a primiative version of the open world Zelda model and not even comparable to the old Zelda type game. It's just kind of.... there, and in hindsight will come off as a game that wasn't exactly the end all be all we all thought it was.

I can agree with this, played the HD remasters on PS3 and even though I liked ICO during the PS2 era more it hasn't aged well at all and SOTC is much superior today. They said that this list don't factor nostalgia but it seems like they haven't played ICO recently. It's a great game don't get me wrong, but playing it today doesn't feel so unique and special as it was while SOTC is still a unique game today like no other.

I think more complaints should be made for what's missing than the order. I mean no Chrono Trigger and other Final Fantasy games...

Zelda II was the follow up to Zelda I and it's not considered better than the original than most. Majora's Mask is the follow up to the first 3D Zelda game (Oot) and it's not considered better by most nor did it make Oot primative or just....there.

You make no point at all.

Indeed. You shouldn't take this list too seriously as it's most likely a jointly created effort by a bunch of people who had their own favourite games. You should listen to the last PC Gamer UK podcast where they run down their top 100 list they created along side the US side of their publication. Just about every game between 100 - 59 was them saying either "I don't care for this game" or even "I've never heard of this one".

If you've played 100 games you can create your own list and it would be just as credible.

There are many people that view the gameplay as an accessory to the narrative and atmosphere in those games, and, viewed as such, prefer Ico for its more compact and arguably greater emotional strength.

I personally think SotC is a much better game to actually play, and value it much higher, but the line of reasoning above is usually what I see when fans of the series place Ico higher.

I think that will leave BotW as its own unique game that people continue to appreciate for its own unique qualities.

I would love to see those additions you mentioned in future games, but additions aren't by necessity improvements. BotW has its own heart, and if you make a game similar to it that is more packed with content that will result in a game with a different heart. Sometimes the simpler one is better, sometimes not, but I don't think you can say that because a game has a small feature list it is doomed to obscurity. For example there's almost nothing to do in SotC and it's one of the most beloved games ever - if you stuffed it with side quests it probably would have been a worse game.

I like how they clarified that this list was done through a modern lens rather than treating the games by the benchmark set, eve stating that some titles were dragged out for replays.

Take Half Life 2 for example. I arrived to this game late and by that point it was a serious trudge to play. Did it lay down some frameworks? Perhaps. It's certainly been passed by now, by some of Valve's subsequent titles even.

Same with Chrono Trigger. I've not played this but I did step back to play benchmark FFVI for the first time ever and... well, I feel it certainly fits into the "you had to be there" category for me. Both games might sit so well in consciousness but to go in fresh nowadays, up against everything that has been since? Perhaps not 100 list worthy. (Replace that with all time fave of mine FFVII if you wish. I love that game but it sure as hell doesn't look good through the lens of someone coming to the game now.)

Maybe a splinter list of Top 100 Most Important Games would serve fond memories better.
