Nintendo details how physical games bigger than 32GB will work on Switch

And once they prematurely shut down the servers like Wii and Wii U?
The only reason the Wii servers went down was because of GameSpy going under. Even with the upcoming death of Miiverse, the Wii U online servers are still gonna continue.

Hopefully Nintendo offers larger cartridge sizes to developers in the future, 'cause this doesn't seem like the best solution. I understand the situation, but it still seems like a weird work-around.

Part of the problem is if they do then no one will bother to compress their games and you'll wind up with stupid huge amounts of data on the cards and they'll still want you to download shit.

Right, this is almost as unacceptable as their online voice chat 'solution'.

Not to mention that you can still download/play games on the Wii Shop and Wii U eShop.

Games and updates are separate to game servers to play online, which is what was shutdown on Wii because of Gamespy.

This never happened. You can still download games.

Isn't it misleading to say "microSD card required" ? What if you have enough internal space left?

If the game is bigger than 32GB and the internal storage is 32GB how can you have internal space left?

The OP picture is referring to the digital download version.

Because you're not downloading the full game.
The assumption is that 2K18 will be on a 16GB cart to save costs. Game is 25GB, so it means around 9GB to download.

Dragon Quest Heroes is around 32GB and it came in one cart.

Even if a game was 32GB, on a 16GB cart it would need around 16GB more to download.

Internal storage is 25GB of the 32GB.

Pity Nintendo never put a second gamecard slot on the Switch, it could of had great potential. It could of been used for expansion content in large games or to hold two games at the same time. Imagine Nintendo selling physical cards for season pass content in Botw.

Well... this is something I worried about happening back when the confusion over Lego City kicked up.

I really do not want this becoming standard for the console, and hope Nintendo realise the importance of just offering larger cartridges, or maybe even offering to help compress things. Otherwise, this is gonna be a nightmare for longterm preservation. To those above citing the Wii U's services still being up - of course they are, the damned thing was only discontinued this year. We don't know if that'll be the case in ten years, or twenty, or thirty. If physical versions of games are potentially missing core features - not just DLC - as a result, that's bad precedent for the preservation of a medium that's already a headache to preserve.

You'd still need a microSD card for the huge game updates that will get pushed down for a game like NBA 2K.

I presume this was the option 2K wanted instead of a bigger cart or compressing their game to fit in a Switch cart.

Is it too much to make cards larger than 32gigs? That's crazy. Why not just have all cards have nothing and require downloads if they don't consider it to be a problem.

Probably not worth the money for Nintendo/the publisher. I'm sure it will happen in the future. Nintendo was pretty lame not to launch this thing with with more storage though.

Isn't this thread about games not fitting on a game card, and therefore you have to download the rest of the data?

Larger cartridges would cost even more and game companies are not willing to absorb that loss.

Costs will come down and will be less of an issue in a year or two. Larger carts are almost certainly coming, especially if more third parties show interest in porting games.

Why don't they just offer 64GB carts for games larger than 32GB? It'll be once in a blue moon, and 64GB as a standard will last them the generation.

Hell, they can do Disc 1 and Disc 2. Anything to save people space.

2K don't even seem to want to use the 32GB that's available to them right now, probably due to cost.

That's pretty disappointing. I've been avoiding shelling out for a large micro sd. Was looking to get 2K18 on switch too :/.

Gamestop will bundle cards, but you gotta spend $50 on a tacky lamp in the shape of Shadow the Hedgehog's head, as well.

Not an appealing solution to undersized game cards, either due to publishers choosing a lower capacity for price or the max Nintendo offering being too little.

So based on Nintendo's statement, isn't this similar to what Microsoft did with Halo: MCC and what they are doing with Forza 7 (4K assets need to be downloaded)?

In theory, NBA 2K could have all of core game assets and modes on the cart, but all of the added fluff (additional commentators, broadcast packages, etc.) would be additional download.

Yes. You'll need a microSD card to play the full game. What's not to understand.

Anyway another win for the Full digital crowd woop woop.

I mean loss for consumers

No, you don't need an SD card.
That's only if you don't have enough room on the internal storage for the extra packs.

It really shouldn't be acceptable that Nintendo requires you to buy extra memory along with a game. I mean damn...it's a home console.

So this is how they start forcing people to adopt digital. I'd rather not buy the game at all if there's no full physical copy.
