Space Hulk: Deathwing |OT| To the left, overwatch!

If this was an alpha/EA title, i'd say it could be salvaged and even become great. The space hulk LOOKS perfect, the terminators are on point, and, hybrids aside, even the nids look pretty dang cool.

Problem is all the stuff lacking: soundtrack, gameplay variety, different enemy patterns, more diverse levels, a story that actually makes you care for it (at least a little bit), some purpose for all those relics you keep stumbling on, better hacking, the works.

As is the AI has two modes: ranged, which is used for hybrids, and includes a surprisingly accurate ability to hit a terminator's head square in the eye from the other side of the room, and melee, which is used for almost all nids and translates into "beeline for target, with the occasional dodge on the way". That's it. Warriors and Broodlords might spit on you if too far for melee, but rest assured, they beelining for your squad in very short order. And that makes the enemy intensely predictable, which wouldn't be a great problem... if you werent limited to carrying only one weapon.

The combination of simplistic AI and loadout makes for extremely limited gameplay possibilities, and, due to the lack of absolutely everything else, the game grows stale at a very accelerated pace. Every encounter is the exact same: fire until they stop coming, keep your heavy psyker powers ready for scythe strains, fire the others as desired.

(also ive no idea why they didn't include a melta. or why, unless you rocking the basic bolter, you can't pick sword or axe. or why the axe has the exact same stats as the sword. or why you can't give a hellfire to the apothecary. or why barac cant carry your heavier loadout. or why you can't use claws on a single hand.)

I really enjoy the silence a lot more than constant "epic" music and other marines talking all the time. I really it the way it is, just you, your buddies and genestealers running around in the pipes.

I was really looking forward to this. Still got the original Space Hulk game and Vengeance of the Blood Angels and love them to death.

I got to try this new game yesterday and hated everything about it.

No cool intro like Vengeance of the Blood Angels which is one of my favourite intros of all time, if not my favourite. No atmospheric music in the mission selection. No badass banter between the Terminators. No giving orders on the map screen. Unimpressive weapons. The Genestealers are half the size they should be. Worst of all, they don't feel like a threat, at all. They just feel like a rush of zombies in Left 4 Dead. They have no AI. In the original games, if you didn't know what you were doing, more often than not one single Genestealer would wipe all you out. They would flank you and wait till you stopped firing to come at you. Here, I have 30 of them rushing at me while I'm just groaning while I hold down the left button waiting for them to run into my bullets. One single alien in Alien Trilogy for the PS1 is scarier than all the 50 Genestealers I had running at me in the 10 minutes before I turned the game off. This game is a bore and I don't feel the need to see it on my screen ever again. I'm super disappointed, but this game is just crap.

Streum On were not trying to emulate the original Space Hulk, instead they have their own vision of it and I love both games equally. It's a bit on the Dynasty Warriors side where enemies are pretty weak but the game itself is very fun. The weapons though are very impressive, the assault cannon, heavy flamer, plasma canon, hellfire bolter and thunder hammer are an absolute joy to use. Even the storm bolter, despite it's meh damage is still a lot of fun to use.

Right this way, gentlemen :D

Any news on patches? Probably won't even look at this until performance is boosted.

There was one coming this week according to the devs

Just finished the singleplayer. The last mission was wave after wave of enemies. But having both you and the assault Marine with Shields and Mace/Thunder hammer is absolutely OP.

Is the melee class even worth playing considering how disadvantaged it is? Btw the librarian fireball is amazing

There's two ways of doing this : either give Barachiel the melee weapons (Claws then Hammer/shield) or have both of you use them.

You alone being melee means he will get chewed up by stuff because of the dumb ai. I find melee to be limiting for myself so I prefer not using it but it's super effective at staying alive, the psykers being the only real threat to you.

Double hammer/shield leaves poor apothecary to deal with ranged threats (and since you want to keep him healing he's stuck with the stormbolter) and you'll be starved for damage when shit hits the fan (though the inner explode power might help with broodlords assuming it oneshots them) but it's pretty funny to just hide behind your shield and see the waves break upon it.

I prefer to have Barachiel tank the horde and myself moving down everything from behind him.

inner explode wont take a broodlord out by itself on normal

Inner Explosion+ a coupla hammer whacks will, tho.

only realized the ungodly amount of health broods and scythes have when i decided to fool around with barac, making both of us go ranged again. A brood can take some 60 shots from caliban's spear.

fwiw you can reliably use psyk lightning to snipe ranged enemies throughout the whole game. Wouldnt suggest going 2x Hammer simply because it`ll make the game quite boring.

-
also this is something that i forgot to complain about before. I've no earthly idea what they were thinking with the hacking. If, when you picked hack, the turret started shooting enemies by itself? sure, would be great. Making you manually aim from a funny angle, all the while leaving your spess terminatyr vulnerable? Horrible. Especially since the turret will become disabled as soon as you leave the interface, so might as well pick Destroy from the outset. All of this is compounded by the fact that all hacking options take exactly the same amount of time to perform, so there is no risk/reward element.

Heck, by the end of the game i just said sod it and deactivated the damn things via plasma.

Greetings Brothers!

We're pleased to release our first update for Space Hulk: Deathwing.

The main goal of this first patch was to eliminate any game breaking bugs, crashes and severe FPS drops. We hope many of you are now better able to enjoy the game! That said, we’re aware that some players are experiencing occasional lobby connection errors and performance issues, and that’s our current focus as we continue to read your messages on social media.

As always, your feedback is valuable for us to resolve any technical issues as soon as possible. You can report your issues in the technical section of the official forum[forum.spacehulk-deathwing.com]. We’d also recommend consulting our Technical FAQ, Gameplay Tips and Known Issues & helpful workarounds threads.

Space Hulk: Deathwing - Hotfix 1.06 - 231MB

  • Various performance optimizations (this is also an ongoing process).
  • Inventory crash (in multiplayer) fixed.
  • Major FPS drop on Chapter 1 experienced by AMD processors fixed.
  • Input loss upon door interaction in multiplayer fixed.
  • Potential crash using NVIDIA graphics card fixed.
  • Multiplayer connection timeout increased, allowing more modest systems greater time to connect.

Please note that the update process opens the game file, meaning you need approximately 32GB of temporary free disk space in the Steam directory to update the game. Free some space if the update is stuck.

The last 5% of the download are the rewriting of the 32GB file which makes it appear stuck but it is actually processing and may take a while.

.

So is anyone still playing this?
Is performance improved at all?

Mildly improved but still drops pretty frequently when multiple enemies are on screen.

Honestly the game is absolutely not worth asking price right now anyway. Theres hardly anyone playing MP except for private games. They promised a "big patch" in late January so hold off til then and see if stops the game from being shit

I do. The single player is a lot of fun. Just walking around and soaking in the atmosphere is so good. All the machinery, pipes, dim lights, heavy doors, heavy thuds of the marines, so awesome. Although there is a Grand Canyon sized room for improvement that's for sure. Customisation, more missions, guns, melee weapons, better performance, multi squad missions, mid-mission events, more claustrophobic maps like the missions in the original Space Hulk, etc.

Any news about this big patch?

I'm basically just waiting until they manage to offer acceptable performance before jumping in, even with the middling reviews.

Fell off this pretty hard, simply due to performance. Nothing kills enthusiasm faster than that, particularly when you exceed all the requirements comfortably. It shouldn't chug the way it does.

I jumped in at 1.06 and my performance was fine. Load times are long, but once you get ingame it ran like any other and I only have a GTX760.

It's just a shame that Tyranids aren't an interesting enemy, you travel from ship to ship yet the maps are always identical, and there's very little environmental interaction.

Well, I'll try to come back to this game closer to the end of the year maybe, cuz there's a lot they need to fix and make this game enjoyable to play at least in SP and they just can fix it with just 2-3 patches.

Well, FPS is still unstable for me (can't get stable 60 at all times because of the hitching here and there) and does not go beyond 62 even though I've unlocked it, but extremely low FPS during combat encounters seems to be fixed. Keep in mind guys that this is with max settings in 1080p only and with x2 temporal AA on a W10 (latest update), 4790k @4.4 GHz, 16 GB RAM, ASUS STIX 1070 OC.

now this will take even longer :(
1 additional year of development at least.

My friend just gifted me this but the reviews are a bit worrying, I heard it just got updated though, how is it now?

Single player allows 3 AI companions. Multiplayer allows ZERO?? I have to have 3 friends for a full squad, or rely on a public game(no thanks). 2 players would be impossible.

This still baffles me. I'll wait until they allow AI multiplayer before I touch this again.

Hmm, I just started this and I'm getting awful performance, not just normal frame rate drops but something is very wrong with this game. I'm just walking back and forth and my frame rate is jumping wildly, and it's even causing the audio to cut out. I've tried it on the lowest settings with the same result. Is this just how it is, or is there something that can be done about it?

Hearing talk of continuing performance problems bums me out. This was actually my most anticipated game last year, but I've been waiting for a fix before picking it up (and persuading a few friends to join).

Yep, I'm holding off for a good steam sale (not some lousy 30%) like a week ago.

It's been a long wait but better late than never. I'll definitely be all over the Xbone version in Q4.
Has any DLC come out yet, new chapters maybe? I just did a Google search and found a lot of people asking about future DLC or coming up with ideas but nothing saying any had come out. I would greatly prefer to play as some Space Wolf terminators but will settle for some heretic Dark Angels if I have to.

New Patch.
http://store.steampowered.com/news/externalpost/steam_community_announcements/1967358417052566917

Greetings Brothers,

The sixth update is now live for Space Hulk: Deathwing!
This update adds exciting new content and features for players who dare enter the Genestealer-infested Space Hulk – all of which will be included in a series of free content updates for PC players.
Today's patch focuses on additional gameplay variety, as well as fully introducing the Special Missions mode to singleplayer and multiplayer.
Special Missions bring a new level of uncertainty for even the most hardened Terminator squads. Starting a chapter will generate a randomised sequence of missions and Genestealer spawns for a truly unpredictable challenge.

Here are today's patch notes:

Additions:

Full Special Missions feature released in both single and multiplayer
All 7 chapters playable.
All the content can be accessed in single-player (from the main menu) and multiplayer (through a lobby).
You unlock the special missions in singleplayer after completing the chapter in the solo campaign. For example if your most advanced save is in chapter 7, you will have access to single-player special missions from Chapter 1 to 6.
If you no longer have your save file or haven't finished the campaign, but would like to try the new game modes in singleplayer, you'll find HERE a file unlocking all special missions. Put the file in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\SpaceHulkGame\Saved\SaveGames

New Multiplayer Skills
Proximity Mine
Places an explosive proximity mine.
Heavy Weapon Skill
Skull Drone
Summons a combat drone to temporarily fight at your side.
Tactic Skill
Frenzy
Briefly increases your melee attack speed.
Assault Skill
Fire Storm
Briefly increases your weapon's rate of fire.
Heavy Weapon Skill
Gameplay Tweaks
The limitation on classes in multiplayer has now been removed.
Shortcuts for orders have been enabled in multiplayer.

Holding shift when out of endurance no longer drains your endurance.

Bugfixes:

Fixed a rare issue with LoD
When joining an already in-progress multiplayer game, you should no longer see the partially loaded chapter for a few seconds (it can still happen on some low end hardware).
Broodlords should no longer have a pathfinding issue causing them to fly to their destination.
Fixed Belial saying a random line at the end of a Special Mission
Fixed a bug where the first dialogue of a chapter would play when opening the armory in the bridgehead
The language of the logs and objectives during a multiplayer game is now based on your own settings rather than those of the host.
Fixed an issue that caused the logs to not be properly displayed in multiplayer.
Motion blur is now working properly for all hardware.
Fixed many issues when joining a game where all the others players were dead. This includes graphical glitches resolutions, overlapping menus and a possible block.

I see they are still updating this. Is it worthwhile for solo play?

It definitely is imo. It's currently on sale on Steam and there's a new patch featuring the Chaplain class.

Patch Notes :
Greetings Brothers,

The seventh update is now live for Space Hulk: Deathwing!
This new update is part of our development of the major content addition coming later this year with the release of Space Hulk: Deathwing on consoles - free on PC.
Today, we introduce the Interrogator-Chaplain Class to Space Hulk: Deathwing, the sixth class!

Key Features:
New Class Integration: The Interrogator Chaplain
The Chaplain can carry the Crozius Arcanum and brings new diversity to the Multiplayer and Special Missions Game Modes.
He has the unique ability to recall all allies, or protect them for a short time.
New Weapons (Stormbolter MK2, Purgatory Sword).

Psygate System has been overhauled: you can now only open a portal to the psygate when you successfully achieve an objective. Works in both solo and multiplayer. You can no longer open psygate at will except during the solo campaign.

Changes to Solo Special Missions: you now play as a specialised class in Special Missions - each class now has its own niche, instead of being a jack of all trades. This was made to make the mode more similar to multiplayer and in preparation for the customisation system.

UI Improvements and rework

Font rework

Improved menu controller support
Controller improvements – XB1 or XB360 controller advised

Bug Fixes:
Multiple UI bugfixes and improvements
Multiple Controller bugfixes in the menu: all menus and gameplay should now be playable with a controller
Added a confirmation check when using the ”leave" button on a multiplayer lobby
Added a restart button after dying on a Solo Special Mission
Fixed a few cases of overlapping GUI elements when opening different menus
Fixed a rare out of bounds in Chapter 3.
Fixed the Librarian arm's being slighty invisible when equipped with a powerfist.
Fixed the name of the Special Missions being displayed with a ”beta" tag
Fixed some AI pathfinding issues in Chapter 2.
Fixed some issues remaining in a few Special Missions.
Fixed the Broodlord spawn in Chapter 7.
Fixed the cages in Chapter 6 not having proper collision detection.
Fixed in Chapter 4, Genestealers could spawn on a height and get stuck
Fixed in Chapter 5, Hybrids could spawn behind a rock and get stuck
Fixed turrets firing through walls in Chapter 2
Fixed major FPS drops at the end of Chapter 9
Fixed some issues when switching classes too fast in a lobby
Fixed some lights in the tutorial
Fixed some flickering textures
Fixed some levitating environmental assets

Known Issues
The new psygate system has a few issues still
Guest users will sometimes not see the GUI of the spells Frenzy, Firestorm, Crusaders, and chaplain spells.
Guest using the heavy specialty class can sometimes have issues using the proximity mine when coming from a lobby.
The orders wheel may sometimes not be called in multiplayer (keyboard shortcuts are still usable).
In solo modes, teammates may sometimes not respond to your orders.
On very rare occasions, a solo Special Mission may not end.
You may encounter partially unloaded maps for a few seconds when jumping in a multiplayer game.
The lobby menu may overlap on your game if you join a game at the exact moment the host launches it.
When an objective is completed in multiplayer, it might stop the current action of a guest player.

Personally I can't wait for the PS4 version, any news on that??
Holy cow I thought Vermentide was this. But there are TWO fps Warhammer games?!

I just got into Warhammer anything thanks to 40k, but I'm also itching for a new L4D-like game. This looks awesome. I am now also very pumped for ps4 version.

Been playing through solo and enjoying it for the most part. I get the vibe this game caters to fans of WH40K in a big way. I have no idea what's going on besides anything obvious. I'm learning more from this thread than I am from the game. Well... learning what things mean so I have a better understanding.
