i rather like amazon's programming. a few clunkers here and there but i hope they don't go all "try hard" trying to produce the Next Big Thing

I think they mastered the whole unexpected twists/deaths thing in a way that would make Shayamalan tear up.

I'd agree. The twists, stabs in the back, and deaths are what drew people to it. And just a dose of fantasy. I think if GoT were high fantasy (or even as fantastic as the books) it might not have worked.

Tig ol' bitties and gigantic penises helped too.

Do a show in ancient Egypt. With high production values it could be great. Spike did a great job with Tut.

Not enough of TV shows in this setting, most of them are documentaries. We have enough TV shows with the fantasy setting.

If they are attempting to capture the GoT medieval fantasy audience in the wake of its finale The First Law series would be perfect.

If their goal is to find the next generational water cooler hit, good luck. They should aim for Lost or Breaking Bad level of success first. Hell has Netflix even had that kind of success yet? Stranger Things may be on it's way but it's still early.

I don't know why people want Berserk. I don't think Miura will tell the producers/writers the ending and Berserk imo is only halfway there with no end in sight whereas ASOIAF is left with only 2 books and GRRM understands how a tv series work.

Knows the Score
Wouldn't mind if they picked up Dredd and worked with Rebellion on their IPs, they've got loads of stuff that could work.

Very likable characters, simple story, heart touching moments, lots of action. Read when I was ~14. Still love it.

Obvious choice. Long, complex story. Needs a lot of work though and a lot of stuff needs be rewritten. The story structure in the books is a mess, especially in the 'middle'. Still has the biggest chance to become the new GoT

Could also work. Again not the deepest story story, but very entertaining. Mystery, some poltical plays and lots of fast character development.

They have the money but they seem to just be greenlighting everything they get their hands on and hope something sticks. Maybe this is a change of approach for them to invest more time, money and marketing for their next one.

GoT might not have been a success (at least not as big) without HBO's pedigree behind it.

Can you, or someone else help put this all into perspective for me. As someone who has not seen any of the shows mentioned in this post, is GOT that much more popular than Breaking bad or lost, or am I reading your post wrong? Does GOT have the largest collective mindshare of any modern TV program?

That's the thing I fear, the characters in Beserk aren't easily relatable and their intentions aren't easily defined.

I don't know how audiences would take to Griffith, or if they would tolerate Casca becoming a totally different Character.
Hell, what if they don't like Guts :p? He's our sole anchor to the story. Game of Thrones always had multiple, even if some were obviously more important than others. This is where my main gripe with the Berserk suggestions lie: it's a story told from a single perspective about one person and their journey, compared to the much grander Game of Thrones. They're pretty different beasts as far as how the story is told and I think Berserk's appeal would ultimately be limited by this. But this is all conjecture and anyone's guess is good as mine. I certainly wouldn't be upset if Berserk became the next big thing.

The Dark Tower. Its time for redemption. Prove that that movie was trash and show what the series truly has to offer.

Yeah. HBO built alot of pedigree and confidence with ROME and things like Deadwood.

Honestly, I think they should aim for quality over quantity first. Game of Thrones might be the most popular show of the moment, but nowadays it's not much more than pulp tv. Amazon is already doing amazing stuff with their original movies, they just need to bring that to their TV department.

I think Lost was way more popular than Game of Thrones is now. It's just that now the internet is at it's prime, so people believe GoT is the most popular thing around because all the popular blogs are talking about it when a new episode gets released. Now that the season has ended you barely notice people talking about the show, unless it's to discuss the decline in quality. When Lost was around, it was pretty much unescapable even when it was between seasons. I didn't even watch Lost, but I still feel like I watched the show because everywhere you went people were talking about Lost. Just imagine if Facebook was as big then as it is now, it would've blown everything out of the water.

Honestly, it's much harder to reach Lost-levels than Game of Thrones-levels IMO. GoT is for most just entertainment, Lost had the entire world go crazy trying to figure out what was going on.

Dune would clean up if done right
Dune, and do it right this time.
i fear no one will everyone able to do Dune right
Unfortunately I concur
Yeah *sigh*

Well hopefully Denis Villeneuve can since he's doing the movie version after blade runner 2049 and it has nothing to do with Amazon.

Did everyone mentioning dune in this thread miss that news? Cause it was a fucking HUGE thrill for me when I heard it

Their have been shows in the past that have been so popular you could casually bring them up and carry a conversation with acquaintances or co-workers but GoT feels more like an event to me, like the Super Bowl. I just reaches so many more people which in part is because of social media, now the entire world can enjoy the water cooler talk.

I didn't watch Lost either but I don't think it's near GoT levels personality. But it was also at a time where you couldn't jump in and catch up on previous seasons easily. If you could binge the show and react with the rest of the world on Twitter or Facebook maybe GoT wouldn't as a big deal, it's hard to say.

Beserk's story is much about Griffith as it is Guts.

If not The Dark Tower, Amazon should make a high budget live action series based off of a popular mmo. Or just make an entirely original story.

Final Fantasy: An amazon series.

Magic, politics, romance, summons, monsters, drama, violence, and yes nudity too.

Kvothe chonicles. Same glacial writing pace as Martins and its unfinished. Obviously those are the key success criteria!

Just do a Live action Berserk adaptation. Old style middle ages action, sex scenes, fucked up shit in general. Put effort into it and you have your GOT rival.

Well, I mean...

The film is another itineration of The Gunslinger's story. Easy enough to do a soft reboot and have another itineration more faithful to the books.

Nope, not connected to the movie IIRC.

Thought I read it woulds be thebsame actors, writer and director? Even if the story is rebooted and completely disconnected from the movie it would be too connected in other ways. And thats not a diss on the movie leads cos I love Matt and Idris but the association with the movie would be too great to fully detach the negativity.

They need a completely new team for it to have a chance, I think.

Dune does have the political intrigue of Game of Thrones, but fantasy tends to do better than scifi, right? Game of Thrones, LotR, the Hobbit, etc.

Aside from Star Trek and Star Wars, have there been any really great scifi tv shows that was water cooler talk? Battlestar Galactica?

And oh.

A high budget His Dark Materials series would be amazing.

I think BBC is doing a series but I doubt ita gonna have a huge budget.

Lost was pretty huge but it was actually a show that declined in popularity and relevance over time, Game of Thrones has only grown which is phenomenal considering it's a much harder show to find and watch legally
