Amazon CEO demands a 'Game of Thrones' style hit

'Demand'

Who? You can't 'demand' audiences. Reminds me of 'please understand' and 'please be excited'.

Good luck tryharding.

If they want fantasy, Gene Wolf or Fritz Leiber have the best material that hasn't been adapted.

I think the Laundry series is probably a better fit. You have spies, cosmic horror, and you can hire talented, cheaper British actors. I'm pretty sure Stross would want creative control though.

Seriously. Ancient Egypt. Nobody does it. The movie industry fails at it. Spike did a great job with Tut like I said, watch it if you haven't.

Is there any TV shows out there with this setting? I can't find any.

I have a suggestion... Berserk.

I usually would roll my eyes at this but anime is probably one of the most under tapped resources for adaptations.

I think their harder to adapt than western sources but if done right could be huge

Well, Bezos could easily pay for something like that out of his own pocket, so there really isn't anything to prevent something like Malazan, Wheel of Time or Dark Tower from getting a show on Amazon.

Take Samurai X or Bleach if you want to take anime. That seems like doable CGI.
As for next big thing, it won't be fantasy. Just like we got zombies after vampires instead of more vampires.

FOX tried their hand with Hieroglyph. Even remembered to include black people.

If that One Piece adaptation actually goes into production, that'll probably become TV's metric for how successful that may or may not be.

Berserk's Golden Age arc would make a great show, and could realistically be done, but Berserk later on would either be completely different or have nothing but CGI.

The Dark Tower is absolutely ripe for Game of Thrones level greatness if a TV show could be made. Dune could have multiple series with the original story and the prequals.

They haven't had a GOT-like hit because a lot of the original content available on the streaming service is relatively forgettable. Throw money behind a well known/rising property and search for some top tier talent that is passionate about the project and they'll see some movement.

But don't say you want a GOT-style hit and then attempt to make a TV version of Eragon looking for some gigantic payoff because it's a book series with dragons too.

This reminds me a lot of the 2008-2009 "Make it dark-Like The Dark Knight." Mentality that flooded Hollywood.

I don't get the sarcasm in this thread. Sure, hits aren't guaranteed things, but I think Game of Thrones has proven monetary investment is a significant part of it.

People were saying "give me a Breaking Bad" a few years back. That show also took years and a streaming deal to snowball. Things don't change. That said some things are just lightning from the start. There's so many factors, but a lot of it's just luck.

Big shows have showrunners and a stable of directors. No one director can direct 50+ episodes

Jimmy Burrows sure can. Over 1000 episodes and counting, including 240 of one show.
I know, I know, multi cam comedy

Raymond Feist's Riftwar would be awesome. I don't think I'll live long enough to see Magician adapted for the screen.

Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon would be awesome follow ups too, probably break the budget for the last book.

Love these books, they got started me into the fantasy novel genre. Serpentwar saga wasn't bad either.

For every GoT how many Sense8 shows are out there? Throwing money into a project is just one part of a perfect storm they are attempting to re-create.

Should make series of Malazan book of the fallen.

Not that it would get into GoT levels of hype, nothing will.
I would absolutely love to see Amazon burn a small fortune offspring this beautiful clusterfuck of a series but I can't image it'd make the jump to mainstream viewership.

Came here to post this. Filming it like GOT would be impossible, though. It needs to be shot and stylized like an anime in warehouses, not out in the wild. The budget will spiral out of control quickly.

Surprised by the number of Berserk recommendations in this thread... First arc would make great television, but IIRC it completely spirals off and goes "full anime" after that. Stuff like
giant faces in seas of blood or some nonsense.

Personally if they were going to take an anime and make it into a mainstream show, I'd like to see a live action, gritty Mobile Suit Gundam. Done in the style of Battlestar Galactica remake.
That old FMV game with American actors doesn't exist.

That or Legend of Galactic Heroes. I often describe it as akin to "GoT in space" to get the gist across. Maybe Arslan could work too. Something that's a bit more consistent than Berserk but still has a lot of worldbuilding and lore.

It'll never happen, but I always thought Harry Potter would be better adapted in a modern high production TV show...

Too bad Netflix signed up Witcher. I think if done right, Witcher has a huge potential.

But GoT didn't become what it is until The Red Wedding. That became a water cooler talking point for years and finally people started tuning in. Red Wedding happened near the end of Season 3. "Wait, all the main heroes died???"

Witcher, Dune and other sprawling fiction does not have this element either.

I would love Berserk, but the impracticality of the giant sword would be too hard to work out for a live action series.

Pretty sure Dark Tower is already getting a TV series for 2018, though they keep altering what's going to be in it. But maybe the poor reception to the movie killed it? (I actually hadn't realized the movie had even come out.)

Dune's been done a bunch, and while not perfect, I don't see it likely to be done much better. I'd like to see the Butlerian Jihad though. But I'm not sure how much of it was fun just because you see the origins of the families.

Are you going to cast historically accurate or invite the wrath of Social Media? The only Egyptian you can do is Cleopatra Egypt, Ubi is already doing it.

He brings up the water cooler expect.

GoT is a show that even outside of the big events, always has a ton of water color moments. They gotta find a series that has as many twists and turns as GoT if they want to capture the color water like GoT has.

40k is the easy pick here. Imagine if at the end of GoT a space god lands and approached Snow telling him he is one of his lost sons and he has 19 more to find scattered across the universe. You gotta tell each ones story before the real one begins.

Instead of bringing the show to the water cooler, lets bring the water cooler to the show!

The water cooler chronicles!

There's nothing else like Sense8, and I'm pretty sure we all know the reason why that show wasn't a hit (hint: it had nothing to do with quality).

I'm just saying "hits" have less to do with luck and more to do with money and getting the right people on board.
