It's sad because this is a genuine inquiry. I think it's a bit late. You just have that collective group of young teens and adults that think they're being funny and ironic or that it doesn't really count when they say it.

*shrug*, 350,000 views and counting on NeoGAF

:)

Kotaku has an article about it and the Firewatch dev issuing a DMCA.

WELL gamespot and eurogamer already have stuff on it and austin walker was tweeting about it. You may have Jeff or Alex muse about it on GB

Thanks guys, this is encouraging. I just don't want a repeat of the gamergate women harassment stuff which took forever for many of the big websites like IGN to even acknowledge.

The answer to his question is that he totally can, too. Because nothing will happen. Nobody will even hear him.

Also why is he so concerned about being able to call people "niggers" in online multiplayer?

Pewdiepie streams to hundreds of thousands/millions of people.

I think the worst thing is that the responses in his defense from YouTuberanto followers etc is showing that his behavior is being normalized. These idiots defending him aren't alt right or nazis but it's bad because they are growing up apathetic to all this and are going to turn a blind eye to racism

"It's just words. Words are words. Don't give them power"

I'm a bit confused by some of the reactions here to Jim Sterling's tweet.... "Liability" isn't a solely monetary term

Regarding the initial offense by PDP: fuuuuuuuuuuuuck this guy

"so its okay for blacks to say it but not for felix?!"

I mean, the only way to reappropiate the slur and give it a better context is by the groups affected by it to use it and give it a better light, right?

People give the word nigger way too much power. There's no other word in the English language that has so much impact.

I'm not defending anyone. Advertisers will punish accordingly

Didnt realize there is two of these threads. Anybody have a list of streamers who are racists or have said anything racist so I can unfollow them.

The reason why it has so much power is beacause it has been used for so long and in such a hurtful way. You can't just erase that.

It doesn't help that it was the verbal kick in the teeth given to people who have been subjugated as less than human for several centuries.

So yes people have given the word power. But probably not the people you are implying with this post.

The word has that amount of impact because of its insanely bleak historical context. You can't just erase that.

Same exact wording? That's scary.

My quote on Jim wasn't an attack by any means.

It was the broader context. I'm sure we'll see more youtubers coming out against him since he IS fucking with their money.

Because that tweet is following other tweets from youtubers like TB worrying this is going to effect them financially, so "liability" is easy to read as being along those lines. It's also much easier to see how PDP is a liability to people financially than in other ways.

Fuck that

If you can't stand up and say "racism is bad" because people might not care, then those people aren't worth caring about

Jim's tweet is bad

Opposing racism is more important than potential profit loss. You lead with that

Does Jim really have to spell it out for everyone that he dislikes racists and such?

He's been doing that for several years now.

And when I see that, it honestly just makes me want to give up.

It wouldn't have nearly as much power if people stopped using it in a derogatory manner.

Hundreds of years of racism don't just go away overnight. A lot of it is still here, both directly and indirectly.

I googled liability

li·a·bil·i·ty
noun
1.
the state of being responsible for something, especially by law.
"the partners accept unlimited liability for any risks they undertake"

2.
a person or thing whose presence or behavior is likely to cause embarrassment or put one at a disadvantage.
"he has become a political liability"

I was a little confused too at first but Jim's tweet checks out.

Most gamers are out to rationalize and defend PDP because they already do the same shit online.

But they say racist things while playing games all the time, so it's ok for PDP to say racist things while playing games. It just game banter.

Oh no, PDP is being called a racist. But if if he's a racist for game banter, then they are racists too, just no one ever calls them out.

No no, it's the people calling PDP racist that are wrong. They are just sensitive little snowflakes. They're not racist right... /S

Who are these "people" you speak of?

Guarantee that fool wouldn't go up to a group of blacks and call them that. These people clearly know the difference between right and wrong; they just don't care and try to hide under a guise of innocent ignorance.

Who are these "people" you speak of?

My question as well but I think we both know that poster is referring to people with dark skin and liberals. Pretty annoying this "don't give the word power" sentiment is a thing here. They've clearly never been discriminated against or called a slur out of pure hatred. Makes me upset that some can't look beyond their own limited perspective.

Also the word itself has no power at all, it's the hatred and malice and kicking to the curb that is behind it.

A common word like "jew" can have the same amount of "power" depending on who and how they use it.

This news is eight hours old and it's Sunday.
Okay? What's your point

Literally all I said was Jim's tweet was bad lol

Does Jim really have to spell it out for everyone that he dislikes racists and such?

No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying when you choose to approach the situation from "this could be bad for us" instead of "this is a terrible thing he did" that that's a bad first response and gives a bad impression

please remember that this user thinks that black people make too big a deal out of representation before you respon--aw fuck

I read a comment earlier on Reddit that really put my existence into perspective. It was something along the lines of:

Man, I could have been born 50 years in the future and be an explorer on Mars or some shit, but instead, I gotta live now and watch people defend the casual use of the word nigger.

Fair enough. I can't say I've really seen that sort of thing (I even saw Jim's tweet here first). But reading that on its own came off as "this person is bringing down our industry as a whole" vs. "he is costing us all money"

I watched https://oddshot.tv/s/g_05U6, not a sub or like his content. his Nazi jokes did seem always seem to be in a joking context (that I saw), this does not mean they were good or not over used.(one video that I saw was enough) use of racist slang did seem brought on an 'oops' reaction from him (from the linked video context). of the little I have seen of pewds does not paint him as a blatant racist to me but I could be wrong.

Unpopular opinion but I doubt he is really a racist or nazi. is he funny? my thought is no.

not really sure if worth to be so worked up over it.

does not mean what happened okay? likely not but do not let someone online rule your day.

The first response to this particular incident. It's important to stand up to it every time it happens.
Do you think he doesn't take issue with it otherwise?

Does Austin Walker or any other notably progressive writer need to preface every reactionary tweet to racism within games with "Hey guys, racism is bad. To further elaborate..."
