At their absolute peak who was cooler between Michael Jackson and Prince?

Price was definitely cooler. MJ was cool too, but really nothing in comparison to Prince.

Are there cool new artists anymore? It doesn't seem like it, many of them seem like they're trying way too hard that they just look silly, maybe that's just me getting old though.

Prince. TBH I never really though of Jackson as ever being cool. He was mad popular and obviously at peak around thriller but also clearly socially awkward and often seemed unsure of who he was. MJ was just too messed up to be cool really for me.

Prince though's up there with the icons of cool like Bowie (coolest of 'em all IMHO).

I want to say Prince, but even to this day, i find the smoothness of MJ´s dancing extremely "cool" - i don´t know of any other dancer that can rock the suit + hat cobo better, dancing-wise.
Although as a a real Person - beyond the stage Persona - Prince wins by a mile.
Also, I am 99% sure he didn´t even have "stage Persona". Prince was just that cool.
Never since Jimi Hendrix have flamboyant blouses looked that effortlessly cool.

Prince had more talent musically. Not even a question. He was a master with his instruments.

Prince was a better musician and song writer IMO

MJ was a better singer and dancer

Performers they are kind of a wash

So you could make the argument for either as an artist, but if we are talking coolness its no contest. MJ was a dork.

I honestly think this world was not ready for them to work together on the video for Bad. The planet might've exploded as to how big that would've been. But the supposedly rivalry between the two, prevented that from happening. I love MJ to death but Prince was cooler.

I don't remember who said it, but I'll never forget it.

"Prince was bad enough to steal your girl, steal your girl's clothes, then steal another man's girl while wearing your girl's clothes."

I grew up right smack in the middle of the Prince/MJ/Madonna trinity in the early 80s, and it was never even close-Prince was The Man by a very large margin. While all my friends were raving about Thriller, I was stealing my father's copy of Controversyand playing it on headphones in my room. Michael was safe. Prince made parents nervous. That was pretty much all I needed.

To put it another way, Prince was Ric Flair to MJ's Hulk Hogan.

MJ by a mile. I don't think many people tried to dress or dance or act like prince at his height. His music had wide appeal but his style was pretty niche. MJ had a generation of people wearing high waters, black shoes and... fucking white socks. White socks with black dress shoes! Think about that insanity for one moment.

He still stood out, such a showman.

Sickness. Takes it to a new place. Silky smooth playing with some really creative work, somehow captures a new spirit. Raw and emotional like Hendrix or Stevie without looking like he was trying too hard.

Compare this performance with Clapton's [starting at 3:30] (which I also love)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj4J6i_vw0w

Clapton comes out a bit more understated and also more in line with the orig. more tug at the heartstrings with a vocal like guitar tone.

EDIT: great comparison for anyone doubting that Prince had some great chops, both him and clapton were asked to 'do the honor's' for this, George's masterwork, and they both bring the house down.

Like this cool guy right?

You never dressed like Prince because no one was cool enough to pull it off.

That's not an argument. Try to recreate this look with your 80s pocket money, good luck:

MJ's look was much safer and practical. Only Prince was seemingly able to do sporty activities like playing b-ball in a dress like this.

I don't remember anyone doing that. I do remember people wearing the Beat It jacket and the Thriller jacket. I had a Thriller jacket that I got as a present but was too embarrassed to wear it.

Coolness went to MJ. Those moves. The clothes. Everyone wanted to move, look, and act like him. Even through his various personas and issues you still thought of him as being cooler / more interesting than anyone else.

Sexiness went to Prince. He had his own unique style. It was dangerous. Exotic. Provocative. He had a slew of gorgeous women in his stable. And he could shred on crazy looking guitars. You didn't want to be Prince so much as you wanted to be in his world.

That's the difference between the two to me. They're both equally brilliant for what they set out to do.

mass appeal doesn't always mean something. fidget spinners are popular for christ's sake!

it's a travesty how underrated he is a guitar player

Are we talking about the actual artists or impersonators? If people bothered to impersonate prince back then I'd post a picture of a loser in an assless one piece.

No cool people dressed like MJ.......because he wasn't cool. And even if you wanted to dress like prince you wouldn't try because you knew you couldn't pull it off.

MJ made Neverland Ranch, a place to be a kid forever like in Peter Pan.

Prince had Paisley Park where all types of debauchery went down,

I agree with this.

Really it's up to how you define "cool".

Cool as in "everyone wants to be like him"...well that's MJ. Who at some point in their life hasn't tried to imitate a MJ dance move?

Cool as in "he could talk the panties off"...well that's more Prince than MJ. His goal was sexiness and his music and style were tailored to that end.

You can't be taken seriously if you say that MJ was never cool.

That is an objectively dumb statement.

He looked like such a joke at the end of the bad video. Like it was hilarious, the 3 of them could have bitch slapped MJs whole crew.

I never looked at MJ and thought cool. Talented yes, but he was always kinda weird.

Prince by a long shot. People wanted to be like MJ, doesn't automatically mean cool.

My biggest regret is never being able to see Prince live. I'm not bummed about missing MJ despite liking his music more than Prince's.

everyone in the audience left with a broken mind, guaranteed. Starts off all 80's synth into an ethereal Gilmore-like lines before dusting off the boots with searing guitar solos before settling into a sexy serenation.

Fantastic.
