In a gif, scariest scenes in horror films (spoilers)

Lmao this is hilarious, is the hobo moonwalking or reversing his segway/hoverboard lol?

lol this one too, all wrapped up nice and warm in his cocoon blanky, probably has a cup of hot cocoa on the side.

The gif can't do it justice. Same with the exorcist 3 scene.

Saw Twilight Zone: The Movie as a kid. The It's a Good Life segment started really getting inside my head, but George Miller's Nightmare at 20,000 Feet completely fucked me up and gave me nightmares for a while.

Every time I had to ride in an airplane at night I'd make my older brother sit by the window seat. :p

Not a gif, but there's little to no movement in the shot anyway.

From The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Boyfriend wakes up in the middle of the night to find her staring at him like this. I found it to be super creepy.

My biggest disappointment with the movie is that it abandons its conceit of portraying the events in flashbacks at the trial of the priest followed by rebuttal and scientific explanation of what happened and just unambiguously declares "yeah, it's supernatural."

Um.... I just watched the full scene on YouTube and it's one of the most disturbing, blatantly grotesque things I've seen in a film. I hadn't heard a peep of controversy about this film prior to seeing your post. I'm surprised there wasn't more discussion surrounding it.

Being scalped and then fed your scalp while still alive not being the most explicit thing in your scene is an achievement to say the least. Good lord.

Next up Cannibal Holocaust and A Serbian Film.

Not really a horror film but this bit from se7en scared the bejesus out of me the first time I saw it.

An American Werewolf in London

This is just a small part of the scene. If you haven't seen the movie you should definitely watch it, or at least watch the scene. Easily my all time favorite horror movie, or maybe even movie altogether.

It is, and it aged extremely well. In fact, all those fucken CGI werewolves and CGI transformations we frequently get today look like shit compared to what Rick Baker achieved.

And one of the finest Lovecraftian films ever.

Which is not to say much, but still.

Prince of Darkness was also pretty incredible:

Sad but true, although his episode of Masters of Horror "Cigarette Burns" from 2005 is pretty good (and lovecraftian as well)

I did not know about this, thanks. I've been catching on my Carpenter, watched Christine last week (it was alright, but I was memorized by the car auto-repairing itself, done in fucking 1983).

Yeah, easily one of the best jump scares in a movie, the way it just comes out of nowhere is perfect.
It's good because there is no build up warning. No foreboding music that gets more intense every second. It's a genuine jump scare. I don't get why modern horror movies have to warn us one is coming by using music or direction... You almost always know one is coming. I mean, i know the movie industry tries to cater to the average idiot and has to spell everything out for them but even jump scares?

Not a horror movie strictly speaking, but I always found these scenes in Under the Skin to be terrifying (as well as the entire first half of the movie once you wrap your head around what's going on).

On the flipside the Mulholland Drive jumpscare is telepgraphed for almost a full five minutes beforehand and works flawlessly. Execution is king.

This one is great. You think "This guy is the hero of the story. He'll prevail and get the girl in the end." But then the movie literally dissolves him right on camera.
One of the child characters also dissolves in this movie. They were brothers too. So you had to watch the rest of the movie knowing the loss of the kid who got to live. I remember this being pretty intense.

Anyone remember this weird, obscure horror flick called Biohazard (this was before Resident Evil was a thing), and there was this guy that simply melts into a goo?

Build up, context, direction, and pay-off are what make a jump scare work. It's all in the execution. It's the capper for extended dread and tension.

I don't get what's so great about The Exorcist one

As Sartre noted in his contemplation on Hell in No Exit, the true horror is other members.

Awesome thread!

What about this scene from The VVitch in which (lol)
The witch covers its rod with baby blood

Awesome and extremely unsettling movie all around. Many other scenes from that movie really are incredible.

It's great, just avoid the two sequels. The American remake of The Grudge is good too.

I'm not too sure about the rest of the movie, but this effect from The Fly 2 is really awesome:

I've heard it's basically just a straight remake that isn't as scary as the original.

The fucking dog scene in The Fly 2... 😢

I think Seven most certainly qualifies as a horror film.

I’d argue it’s also the spiritual precursor to the SAW franchise, though it is a much better film than any of those movies.

That movie has some fantastic imagery and photography, but pretty much everything else about it is pedestrian or worse IMO. It ended up a 90 minute Carpenter Brut music video but without the music pretty much.

This thread has got me in the mood for Halloween. I'll have to check out a lot of the movies that have been posted here.

I was also going to post a scene from Lake Mungo, but it looks like someone beat me. One of the worst jump scares I've ever had.

THE most depressing Stephen King horror film I've ever watched. Though ironically Pascow is the least terrifying aspect of the whole thing.

King wasn't going to publish the novel originally because of how relentlessly bleak it was. However I think he had a contractual obligation and his wife convinced him to publish it anyway.

And it has basically no purpose in the film besides shocking gore.

Bone tomahawk is a legitimate excellent film in all respects, except for that scene. The camera should have slowly tightened on Kurt Russell's face while sound and his expression carried the horror of what he was seeing. Instead an other wise outstanding movie turns into torture porn.

I highly recommend seeing the actual film but I always tell people to look away for that whole scene.

The story is charming, funny, dark, scary, and savage. It's almost like a take on the ten little Indians style action/horror structure, but it is both more disarming and more brutal than any other film of that type I have seen.
