It's disheartening to see Yakuza Kiwami not make the top 20 (despite being released on the tail end of August) :-( Any chance it could rise up for September's NPD's?

With so many major titles releasing in September compared to August chances are close to nil.

Wait, what do the asterisks (*) mean again? And why do only Nintendo titles have them?

None of the digital sales for Nintendo games are disclosed.

With NBA, Destiny, FIFA hitting?

Unlikely. Esp at the price tag. (the charts are based on revenue)

Yakuza kiwami is not tracked for august as the period is till august 26 and the game released after but I doubt it will track in the top 10 anyways but maybe top 20.

I don't think it was counted. doesn't NPD usually track until the 25th or so of the month?

I'm almost certain ME:A has had insane permanent price drops globally though.
It retails for <£30 in stores in UK and is now £35 for good even on the massively over priced PSN.

You don't do that for a major AAA title like 4 months after launch.
Mass Effect is in a coffin for a long while.

Aren't these ranking by revenue though?

Thanks for letting me know @noshten, @Diprosalic and @sense, that's good to know! Judging by what I've heard of Kiwami's 6 months of development, very little investment was necessary when producing this title (using many familiar elements from prior titles like 0) so this was more of an opportunity for Sega of America localising their game at a low-cost in order to appeal to newcomers and cultivating/growing their fanbase through word of mouth/brand awareness for future/inevitable Yakuza instalments. I'm sure the real value for them is in that rather than just making good back on their initial investment, at least for this specific title.

Interested to see how yak6 does in March, it seems like ever since Resi5 came out, it's always been close to as cramped as the autumn/fall. 2018 especially seems like a big year and they'll also be more output from MS to add into the mix.

...

This year's NPD have really reminded me how much I've missed out on the whole, cool to see Injustice 2 hanging in there (personally I'm waiting on the XL edition for this one) and Tekken 7 seems to have fallen off too :(

Correct.

Did Yakuza 0 make the top 20? Anyhow, the franchise has never been a major seller.

Good point, I'm not sure as there isn't any concrete info about it out there (I don't think it reached NPD, but I think it may have for the UK equivalent) I just thought the high demand of 0 (with it being sold out here for a while) perhaps the lower pricepoint and producing enough units at launch it'll fair better. Either way, I'm sure it's started off well enough, with much of the attention now going towards getting perople invested to play it down the line for the inevitable black friday sales and hype leading up towards 6...)

Again, Yakuza Kiwami is not in the top 20 from the simple fact that it released too late for the NPD August 2017 tracking period. Same with Mario x Rabbids.

NPD Coverage: July 30-August 26, 2017 (4 weeks, July was 4 weeks)

They both released 29th August. Their release dates are tracked in the September report.

It makes me really happy to see BotW chugging along nicely. Makes me hopeful for the longevity of its sales.

It's sales have been incredible. I'm starting to wonder if this will finally be the game to break OoT's lifetime sales. Would love to know what BotW's LTD numbers are.

Hi everyone, sorry just waking up on the west coast.

I'm around if anyone has any questions.

Also, thanks Guymelef for dropping the link to my first go at a summary video:

I'm trying to make everything a bit easier to digest with some added points of clarification. It's certainly more info than can be included in a tweet or thread, so I hope you dig it. But yeah, it's very much done in corporate-speak. I have a new found respect for everyone who makes videos now, that's for sure!

(And please excuse the error when I called it a 5 week period. DOH!)

It literally came out at 8.29?

Also it's 29.99 which makes it hard to track compared to most 59.99 games. Which was mentioned for Lost legacy in this thread I believe as well.

Yakuza is super niche and Kiwami didn't have much of any advertising compared to Yakuza 0.

But I know what You mean, I'm enjoying it. Not as good as 0 but still really fun.

Edit: Someone already mentioned when NPD tracked month wise, so Kiwami and Rabbids will most likely be represented for September's NPD.

Also are there any numbers for Consoles sold? Switch?PS4?

Yeah if there's ever been two games that have had a considerable amount of people willing to hope and bat against their success it's those 2. Horizon I can sort of understand, it was pitted against Zelda and lost and there were some pathetic people who seemed to be very interested in that 'battle,' but ARMS? ARMS? Why are there so many people pushing an 'ARMS is doomed' narrative, even going so far as lying to do so? I thought one of the main criticisms of Nintendo as a whole was their unwillingness to put new IP in the spotlight, yet there's a tangible hint of delight behind a lot of users wondering if we'll ever see an ARMS 2.

Well as people have pointed out it has done well enough to be compared to other new IP that Nintendo did seem successful enough to develop a sequel of. Guess that is a bad thing then?

Are they all Mario Kart fans and wanted a brand spanking new Mario Kart on the Switch? That's the only reason I can think of...
None of it is understandable.

You do know that People that bought UC4 season pass could get it for free right....?

I'm one of them and i know 3 people around me in the same situation, these people don't contribute to sales.

I'm actually surprised it's in the top 5, i think it's a great result for a good game.

I am surprised it is still charting well.

I would have thought Mario Kart would have murdered everything.

Makes me wonder about who is buying the Switches so far.

It's crazy when you remember that GTAV was released before this gen even started. Rockstar is neck deep in pure cash. I can totally see people double (or triple) dipping when they release a Switch version and then a mobile version in a year or two.

Not sure if you can answer but any ideas on siege numbers in the US LTD?

You've probably been asked this a million times but I'm new here so I'll ask anyway. Is the Switch classified in any way whatsoever as a handheld in these? If not do you foresee doing away with the need to detail handheld sales at say this time next year if the 3DS plummets to irrelevance? What if Nintendo do some sort of dockless Switch (not that I think they will) would that be the only way you see dedicated handhelds surviving into 2019?

Also I can't remember where I asked this and I think it's been buried away several pages ago but how will the SNES mini be detailed? No official numbers outside of Nintendo's PR? Do you have the numbers to compare with the NES Classic launch month since Nintendo have promised multiple times the numbers should be significantly higher?

ARMS does nothing for me. The controls, the character designs - all of it. So I'm not exactly enthusiastic about the possibility of a sequel. The idea of such a skilled dev team alternating between pumping out Mario Kart and ARMS every gen as opposed to working on...pretty much anything else, doesn't sound great to me.

It's classified as a Console.

On the hardware side, I'm sure we'll eventually get to just talking about "gaming hardware" and not break out into Console and Portable components. Not there yet though. On the software side, the split will probably last a little longer.

Well, a Switch is a Switch is a Switch. It would remain a console unless there was some other differentiating factor.

Also I can't remember where I asked this and I think it's been buried away several pages ago but how will the SNES mini be detailed?

It'll be categorized in the "Plug N Play" subsegment of Console hardware, just like the NES Classic is.

We'll be tracking it of course, and sure we have monthly NES Classic tracking as well.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
My problem with ARMS is that I found it to be not very enjoyable. I can't put my finger on why. I just found it cumbersome to play. I'm not shocked it isn't holding well.

Would have much rather had a new Punch-Out!, but I get why Nintendo thought it would catch on.

Do you think 2017 might end up the all-time best year for shooters, given it's only down by 30% with Destiny, Battlefront, and Call of Duty still to come?

Certainly possible. I expect Destiny 2 to be the #1 game of Sept and the #5 game of Q4. Call of Duty: WWII should get a double digit % sales increase over IW and keep #1 for Q4, Star Wars Battlefront 2 could be not too far behind at #2, and we still have games like Wildlands, Siege, Overwatch, as well as COD and BF catalog doing nice numbers every month.

Wouldn't that be a big hill to climb when you look at 2015 which also had a Battlefront and probably the best selling COd this gen. Along with halo 5 and siege

After watching Matt's NPD video I believe he said 2016 was the all time peak shooter year in terms of spend.

I think with the rest of the shooters to come out this year it could be close.

Best selling games of 2017 through August:

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild*
Grand Theft Auto V
For Honor
Horizon Zero Dawn
Injustice 2
Mass Effect: Andromeda
Madden NFL 18
NBA 2K17
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

still confused as to how capcom can be disappointed in this game's sales. maybe not as successful as re6, numbers-wise, but 10th best-selling 2017 game has to count for something :) ...
