Remember New Super Mario Bros. DS versus mode?

Out of nowhere I just remembered that NSMB DS had a 2 players vs mode that was actually really fun. The idea was to collect the 5 star coins. Hitting a player with any mean (fire flower, throwing a shell, jumping on him) would make one if his stars go loose so you could collect it.

I wonder what happened, if Im not mistaked it was never included again in a Super Mario title.

Heres a video if you havent seen it before.

This mode is awesome. Tense for skilled players, download play compatible (along with 4-player versions of the SM64DS minigames).

One cool moment is if you play the Pipe level, and if one player gets the Mega Mushroom they can chase you like Godzilla destroying the entire level.

SO many fun times were had with my friends and I playing the NSMB DS vs. game. I had actually forgotten about it until now! I think I'm going to try to dig that old thing out and have a few rounds with my roommates later, haha.

They gotta bring it back. Having the crown mechanic in Mario 3d world is the only kinda similar thing I can think of in recent years.

Blue shell needs to come back. I remember almost spending more time mindlessly spinning and traversing with it in these levels than actually trying to play the multiplayer XD

I liked playing it more as a deathmatch mode. My friends and I wouldn't collect the star coins but would try to kill each other. It was especially fun with the Koopa shell powerup.

My friends and I played the fuck out of this and Tetris in high school. It was the perfect lunch-time game to play, since rounds and matches were so quick to start and finish. We got hyped as hell playing this, lmao.

I totally forgot about this mode but now I that I am reminded about it, this mode was so good. I have a lot of good memories playing this with my sister.

The GOAT versus mode for 1v1. Settled games with a friend in the middle school bus with this game all the time. It really was meant for skilled players, especially when both are chasing down the blue shell powerup.

Was there a similar mode for super Mario 64 ds? I feel like I played a mode that sounds like this, but not in new super Mario bros.

There was actually. You played in one of the smaller levels collecting stars and coins, and whoever had the most at the end was the winner. Only 5 stars spawned, so you'd have to knock them out of other players eventually.

I played the mess out of this mode with my friend. We were so evenly matched that every match was a fight. When that Mega Mushroom came out... HOO BOY! Good fucking times, man. It's the main reason I put NSMB DS over all other NSMB games. None of them had this awesome mode.

It's actually the best part of the original NSMB, IMO.

Incredibly fun, tense 1v1.

The sort-of similar modes in other NSMB games suck.

It would be amazing if Nintendo made a new stand-alone version and put it on the eShop with online.

Actually, the Wii U was the perfect opportunity for that due to the dual screens for local play. Should have been in Nintendo Land, what a miss.

SMB3 had multiplayer bonus stages that were quite fun as well.

They're remakes from the original Mario Bros.

I played this a ton with my then-girlfriend (now wife). Probably the one game mode we've spent the most time in together...ever.

My sister & I played a lot of its Vs. Mode. It was tight, & I've always wondered why the other NSMB's lacked similar modes.

The mini-games ported over from SM64DS probably took up even more of our time, though. Those mini-games were classics.

I had a to of fun playing that mode with a friend in middle school. Wish that mode was brought back in some way in the later NSMB titles.

Most of the stages were, but there are two original stages, one where you need to collect coins being shot out of a pipe (while avoiding the fireballs coming out of the pipe), and another where you needed to go up and down ladders, kick open boxes, and find coins hidden inside.

Those were really fun.

What sucked about that mode was that every match was only 30 seconds long, you couldn't adjust the timer. Made it super hectic and smartly reduced the time spent where everyone just wails on each other back and forth instead of racing, but not sure why they couldn't just provide an option.

Always seemed so strange to me that Nintendo hasn't add this mode to the new games.

It was so much fun playing this with my friend. That moment playing on the underground level, then someone got the Mega Mushroom, just to see the giant go down by destroying the blocks making the floor.

I need this mode again!!!

Maturity, bitches.
Nice to see people discovering the secret best Mario theme from the previous generation.

I hope they bring something like back to Switch.

2D Mario on Switch, whenever it arrives, is going to be a monster. My wife, who plays no games, was looking at the JoyCons the other day and asked me when we can play Mario Bros together.

Playing older Mario games with an analog stick... Barf.

Not only do you need the pro controller to have a D-Pad, the d-pad sucks and can't be used in handheld mode. So dumb.

It's going to be a huge pain in the ass but there's no way I'm not doing this mod:

6 million views... I love how you can tell that kids searched for Super Mario and watched all these videos. Especially the Mario Party mini game collections are super popular.

NSMB is my favourite NSMB just because of this mode. I would play this all of the time with friends during lunch break in high school.
