Hidden Golf game on Switch accessible via feels

No offence to those touched by this, but it seems ludicrous to me that Nintendo didn't bother with cloud saves, achievements or virtual console, but found the time to integrate an NES golf game in to the firmware, that you can only play for one day a year.

1) cloud saves would take way more time and need to rent servers and other stuff
2) nintendo is working on achievements
3) virtual console works like this
people ask for virtual console that launches with lots of games and complain when it takes a lot of time to make all those games that should launch with virtual console

So yeah, same thing than doing a simple easter egg

Nothing, I'm just skeptical. It's such an odd thing to leave as a tribute and the method of access, that I don't think it is a tribute and that there must be some other reason behind it. That's all.

It's cool either way though.

Does that not seem extremely odd to anybody else? I think the date is a coincidence.

Developers do shit like this all the time. Buried tributes hidden in the code that aren't ever really meant for the public to find.

Video of the confirmed motion that triggers the game with soundbit.

That's definitely Iwata's catchphrase when he's doing his direct pose.

Well, there it is. I can't think of any other reason to include that voice clip, consider me convinced.

For comparison, the voice clip from a direct:

Apologies if I offended anyone with my skepticism. The difficulty of discovering, and the wonkiness (as in it's difficult to pull off) of the gesture made me think there was something else going on.

It's a cool, if not bizarre, nod to Iwata.

I think they must have been banking on this being discovered.

The real tribute isn't the fact that this game is on the firmware, it's that, on the next anniversary of his death, millions of Switch users will stand up and imitate him in their own homes. I find that an incredible piece of benign social engineering. I can't really think of anything that is even remotely similar.

For the lifetime of the Switch, Iwata will be remembered by millions, every year, on the day he died.

Aaaaand now I'm tearing up.

It's a harmless, touching Easter egg. Cmon, man.

Iwata's passing hit me really hard, since my mother passed away also in 2015, merely months before, and for the exact same reason.

It still stings. Hard.

Fantastic easter egg and probably the best ever. Trying not to tear up here.

Still processing this. This is just so fun. How rare it is for huge companies to display this kind of quirkiness and soul. It's a wonderful, touch even for a company as unorthodox as Nintendo.

Man, I'm legit teary-eyed over here.

I was working for Nintendo when Iwata died. I remember my phone blowing up with texts from coworkers I barely even spoke to. We were all pretty devastated, and I think the hole is still there for many. It's interesting how many of us were brought together by the need to just... talk about it. With ANYONE.

Iwata was a good man. A man of exceptionally rare passion AND compassion. There are few men more deserving of the tribute.

Someone did hax the date on a 3.0.0 Switch and managed to access Flog reliably, so it should work on all versions. On that date, that is.

Bummer that it can only be accessed on 1.0 firmware that hasn't gone online.

Amazing, tho

I think the idea here is that once the Switch accessed the servers it knows the correct time and date and can't be tricked. So when July the 11th comes around it should work on all Switch consoles.

Cool, so Iwata still lives on via the Switch plus it shows just much he was liked within Nintendo.

It's a nice tribute to Iwata as he wasn't able to live to see the Switch becoming a success nor see the fruit of his labour in trying to shake up Nintendo.

So your post just comes off as edgy, insensitive and really not relevant to the topic in hand.

Saw this earlier and :(

Oh shit, now I'm bawling 😭

I have a Switch that's never been connected to the internet. I bought it recently in case homebrew becomes a thing. I just took it out of the box, checked the firmware version (2.2.0 I think), and put it back in the box... I guess I can try this!

I'm confused, why make it only accessible on 1.0 that hasn't connected to the internet? Like, were they literally expecting people to never discover it, or do we think it will unlock again at some point?

It's not, it's just that we missed the date, us Internet users. I guarentee on 2018-07-11, it will work on all Switches (on English or Japanese)

Oh, so, it's not that it has been blocked, but they made it so the timer is set to the internet, so you can't spoof it by just changing the date in the system?

It's supposed to only be unlockable on the date of Iwata's death, regardless of firmware version. But you can't fool the Switch by changing the date in the settings if the system was ever connected to the internet (it keeps an internal clock synced with the real date regardless of the manual setting).

So any Switch can access it on the correct day.

It's genius.

Those hidden button prompts might be different ways to launch other games? But then again the Switch OS doesn't have those files in it to begin with.

I was gonna get a switch anyway when Odyssey drops, but this makes me want to get one that much more. :/

I only read a few posts in this thread and learned the answer to your question before you asked it. The gif is in response to your laziness :p

Hey, it was post 27, not "a few" posts in! I tune out quickly when the first 20 replies are variations of "OMG!"

Actually, I read it yesterday. I just wasn't understanding. Pretty cool little tribute.

The prospect of the countless tribute videos that will arise next year as people all over the world will play this game using Iwata's gesture is tearing me up. This is an amazing tribute

My god, what an unbelievably poetic tribute. Iwata sends us his final gift.

I don't normally cry at these kinds of stories, just marvel, but right now the deepest reaches of my heart is touched. A truly legendary man.
