...they have eyeballs. Anyone who gets paid to write about video games should easily be able to tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps.

Nearly everyone can tell the difference between 30 and 60 when compared directly. But problems arise when people are not judging a comparison, just something's subjective "smoothness". It's then that experience comes into play.

This is just insane to me. I could easily tell the difference without side by side. I could tell you if it was variable too, consistently in the 40's. I assume most people who make a career our of video games can do the same...

I can't tell a difference between 30fps and 60fps unless they're side by side. For example I was watching that NBA17 comparison video of Switch vs PS4 Pro and I couldn't tell the difference at all, because they were switched one after another, it didn't help that I couldn't really see much difference anyway between the two. But when shown side by side in another video, I could see the difference in frames per second. Though I'm not a gaming journalist, so whatever.

I can as well. But some people grew up playing only (or mostly) consoles, and are largely accustomed to 20-30FPS. Anything that can nail 30 feels smooth enough, and 40 might feel even better.

I agree that professionals should know better.

A few seconds of low quality offscreen footage

Starts at 5:05.

Can't really tell much, but it looks smooth in the footage.

Become a PC gamer and you quickly learn to see (and more importantly feel) the difference within fractions of seconds of viewing/playing when your main input for controlling the camera is with a mouse. Its a good/bad thing :p

This game looks like 60fps from the leaked footage online. I bet anything on it. If I'm wrong I'll have any avatar you guys want...

From previous videos where people have claimed to know 60 fps when they see it, I know only to trust a select few to tell the difference. I wish I couldn't tell the difference myself.

Goddamn it I don't think I've ever been this on the edge of my seat about the framerate of a video game.

Thanks for posting. This is hilarious. But I'll take anything at this point.... I'm going to go out on a limb and say its running at 60fps. The video itself is running at 30fps or less. I don't know if this makes it any more clear...

I know the thirst is real in here, so I figured you guys would be happy anyway. I genuinely have never been this excited for previews.

I tweeted at her about it, but I guess we'll get the answer soon enough anyway.

60FPS at variable 640p, 30% reduction in enemy count.

Edit - This is my official guess.

Lower enemy count? I really hope not. I personally don't think iD would let that fly.

I know people (Not official journalists though) that believe something is 60fps when it's really hovering in the high 30's and 40's so I know what you mean. A friend of mine plays FFXV in performance mode and was like "omg that 60fps!" and I was like "omg that horrible stuttering in the mid 40's." I just hope we get cheap variable sync televisions for next gen, and I can see it happening since Xbox One X supports FreeSync via HDMI and FreeSync televisions are in the works. GSync and FreeSync have corrupted me.

Seeing as how EA opted for a custom built version of fifa to achieve 1080p/60fps, I'm going to use the same argument to suggest that ID followed the same logic and thinking. So 60 fps is my guess, because spending resources to build a custom engine to only get a 30fps experience is a big waste of time and money IMO.

Well that video is shot at just 30fps so we won't see shit in regards to framerate of the actual game, unless someone is able to spot actual ghosting in that low-quality-ass potato video.

I actually think it might be 60fps. You can tell there's no motion blur on the camera but I do see some smudging from the motion on the Switch screen, which might be the ghosting you're talking about. Plus, id refused to let the PS4 and Xbox versions run at 30 capped. I'm not going to make that a definite answer, but the difference between 30 and 60fps mean life and death on Doom.

They're not using a custom engine. It's the same one.

Not agreeing or disagreeing with you here, but the whole video is blurry af.
I couldn't tell if there's ghosting happening in that video if my life depended on it.

It would not shock me if portable mode was 720p 30 and docked was 60, or some kind of optional toggle to lock the framerate because the 60 is unstable in areas.

There seemed to be motion blur in the footage from the direct. I really wouldn't put stock in anything from a portrait cellphone video taken off screen.

I'm guessing an almost stable 30 with small drops in some areas.

Reasoning: the direct feed footage we DID get - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k038cik6uDw

First of all, that footage is 30 FPS, and second of all, if you see the outdoor jump (0:17 - 0:19), there are dropped frames. Go frame by frame in Youtube by pausing the footage and pressing the . (period) key and you'll see repeated frames in that section (and only that section, actually).

The game will very likely be optimized to make it more stable in areas like that, though. And if we're SUPER lucky, they will be able to make it 60. But still, I am guessing 30. IMO it looks pretty great, nonetheless.

Those few seconds of footage tell us nothing.

It tells us that the framerate is at least above 10fps. Whew!

The "custom" talk from Bethesda was not in reference to the engine, rather it's basically just tweaking and customizing certain settings to get it to work on the Switch.

Most likely.

Being almost finished with Metroid: Samus Returns, I don't think 30 fps by itself would be too big a loss to put me off buying the game but it probably puts me into wait for impressions or reviews... If it's 60 fps I'm all over it no matter the hit to textures or polygons or resolution.

So I continue waiting for confirmation.

At this point I am expecting 30FPS max and not solid or stable because if they had good news it would not have been this far locked behind embargo

They locked all of the original release behind a launch day embargo; you can no longer trust the quality of a Bethesda game by how close to it's launch the embargo is.

This is stupid. We are likely to find out months before release. The game was just unveiled last week in a relatively short, almost teaser trailer esque reveal. Hands on impressions being under embargo until a week later is hardly worrying.

Oh yeah, and this too. Reviews were embargoed until launch day, and it made many of us presume the game must be terrible. Turned out it was GOTFY.

Good point. 60 fps, if you have it, isworth shouting out loud, and bragging about.... They would have done it by now if this were the case.
