Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is Switch's best-selling non-Nintendo game

Can someone explain me how NPD works? Are their numbers not public, but still shared with game reporting sites? (Lack of a "source" or "via" link in the article)

To be fair, Little Mac was ugly in Fight Night Round 2.

It was SNES' Punch-Out's Little Mac, and that game itself was a bonus within FNR2, at that. Crazy to think about, a desperate measure. It's like if Mario Strikers was thrown in FIFA 18...

To be fair, it's not entirely wrong to say that putting in Nintendo characters in a third party game helps it sell more. Case in point:

This was such a brilliant marketing strategy on Nintendo/Namco's part.

yeah I bougth this game with my gamecube. This got me to be a fan of souls
but WTF namco why didn't you follow up this game with Souls calibur 3 for the cube ? i thought this version sold really well :(

made me super pissed that i couldn't play soul calibur 3 since it was ps2 exclusive a console i didn't have

Yes. Companies can buy into their data and analysis services, but sign an NDA that forbids them from sharing exact numbers (unless you are the owner of the product you are divulging, of course, so Nintendo can reveal Switch numbers etc.), but allows general reports like this.

Well deserved! I loved the game and I'll probably end up getting the Season Pass down the road soon. Definitely one of the best games I've played this year and that's saying a lot since this year has been packed with so many great games.

Rabbid Mario is the best character and I'll not hear anything else. It doesn't hurt that he's by far the most overpowered in the game.

So I assume that Eurogamer purchases subscriptions to the main tracking services to have these numbers. Are they allowed to say this even though it's pretty general?

Anyways it's a great game. I was playing with my wife and we were both were blown away by how charming it looks. They nailed the graphics in a technical way but they also nailed the charm and art style which is even more important.

A Mario/Rabbids crossover game exists.

And it's a strategy game.

And it sold well.

And I'm actually happy it's a thing that exists and I'm happy it sold well.

I love you, 2017.

Could not have said it better myself. That fact that this and Yakuza Kiwami were my most anticipated games that month encapsulates everything I've loved about this year in gaming.

The entire Soul Calibur 3 situation is one of the stupidest goddamned things in the history of the medium.

"Hey, you know how we got great sales by going multiplatform?"
"Yeah!"
"How about we don't do that again and release the sequel on just the PS2 in an era before online patches would fix all the horrendous balance issues that we're going to run into and won't be fixed until an arcade release more than a year later?"
"Ye-wait, what."

This game is fucking awesome, besides, who cant love Rabbid Peach? More people need to give it a chance! Glad to hear its doing well!

I haven't used Rabbid Luigi since I got the real Luigi. He seemed pretty bad based on his abilities. I guess I'll have to give him a shot. I'm about to start 4-6, so better late than never I guess.

Vamp dash is really great. I used Mario, Rabbid Mario and Luigi mainly because of Hero Shot and Steely Stare along with Rabbid Mario having a Vamp damage weapon.

With his vampire dash, he's a way more effective healer than Peach or Rabbid Peach. Also his rocket is pretty useful, and he's great for taking hits when he puts his shield up.

His barrier ablility is the best defensive ability in the game. Decreased damage and special effects can't get him.

His vampire dash means the team can heal just by dealing damage and his can dash up to 160 damage.

Your "case in point" of "putting Nintendo characters in a third party game helps it sell more" is a game in a series that already sold well?
That's not exactly a "case in point."

His ability isn't really anything special. But his Vamp dash is what makes him a MVP. Esp when you upgrade it a few times. Can basically use him as a 2nd source of healing due to the fact he and any player who touches an enemy after him heals instantly then.

So far my main team is Mario, Rabbid Peach & Rabbid Luigi for more defensive/general go through. And then for more offensive style is Mario, Rabbid Luigi & Rabbid Mario.

No they sold for being great games, or being only one of the few choices.

Fact is, place Mario in it or any Nintendo sticker and fans will eat it up. Could you imagine the sales of Mario vs Rabbits without the Mario universe? Or soul calibur II without Link?

There’s a reason lot’s of third parties want mario or nintendo cameos in their game.

It’s almost a free ticket to success..

M&L Paper Jam opened at ~50k in NPD iirc. Maybe fans were turned off by "& Luigi"....?

Game completely bombed in the west. As did Mario Puzzles and Dragons

Mario isn't always a "free ticket"

Soul Calibur was barely a series when 2 came out, so I'm not sure where that's coming from.

Calling it a non-nintendo game seems like the most disingenuous thing ever, but I'm happy it's doing well.

It's not a Nintendo game. It's a Mario game though. But Nintendo didn't fund it, they didn't develop it, they didn't handle the marketing and they didn't publish it. How would it be a Nintendo game?

Or "As a follow-up to a game that sold well" if you prefer.

I don't think we got any solid numbers for SC1 on the Dreamcast, but I'd be shocked if it outsold even the Xbox version of SC2. The franchise went nuclear hot with that game. Being available on anything other than moribund hardware was the biggest factor to its success, but people loved those guest characters and Nintendo was pretty smart to snatch up the co-marketing rights to the game, since their version practically sold itself with simple gameplay footage.

I have not enjoyed a new take on Mario this much since the original Paper Mario, and Mario RPG before it. To me it has that same "smiling the whole time I play it" quality.
