Project CARS 2 discussion thread (provisional release date: Septemberish 2017)

One annoying nitpick - in the timing page during an event it uses your Steam name rather than the real name you put in the profile. So all the drivers have regular names, and there I am with my Steam profile nickname.

This is an annoying one for me too. Why bother making a profile using your real name when your steam name shows up instead?

So thunderstorm at night with full LeMans grid. (set to vsync at 60fps)

I was getting 50-60fps. And it was up to 60fps once we hit the Mulsanne Straight. It did seem to me that the weather effects are dialed back a bit at night. That's what it looks like anyway.

Also I didn't feel very hindered by the wet road. There's nothing like the way cars react to puddles as in Forza 6.

Then I tried it at 4K at LeMans with a full grid, night and thunderstorm.
And that gave me a variable rate of between 35-50, with it being above 45 much of the time.
Thanks for confirming that it's a game related issue, likely one of the reflection settings.

I did see on the SMS forums to turn down environmental and regular reflections to boost frames much like the first game.

Anybody playing on Steam want to provide their steam name, or friend me?

I played the first one, playing on a controller and consider myself pretty competent at that. I know my times wont be as good as you wheel users, but I do intend to get one soon, and it would be nice to have some names up on the speed charts to shoot for.

The pad handling is still fucking weird with some cars. Like I can drive the Nissan R390 race car with no assists just fine and it feels great, but the Mclaren 720S feels like it's driving on bald tyres and is real squirrely...

Also had about 5 CTD's on PC in 2.5 hours, and one crash reset my PC....I'm using SLI so it might be an issue with that.

To PS4/Pro users:
- is the AI as bad as in Gamersyde videos?
-does the AI cars have more grip in the wet than you have?

Tyler, care to share your FFB settings?
I don't really have played the game enough, and given that there only a few sliders, that are pretty straight forward once you tried out what they do, I don't think it's really necessary to post setups, but right now it's

flavour RAW
gain 100
volume 58
tone 60
FX 100

I have assigned "volume up/down" to buttons and it needs to be changed a bit for different types of cars sadly.
On the "configuration" page (2 tabs left of Force Feedback) there is an option "Damper Saturation", I have that turned down to 10, but need to play withbit some more. All deadzones are turned to 0 or 100.

This is for a Thrustmaster TX/T300 with 900 degree and everything turned to full in the thrustmaster control panel including master.

After much jiggery-pokery of paused downloads, failed installs and moving steam folders to make room on my SSD for pCARS 2 and it's various updates (fuck knows what the final size is) I finally get to boot the game up.

  • BN splash screen: check
  • Fmod etc splash screen: check
  • Car/track splash screen: check
  • Blank screen: check
  • Sounds of an intro movie perhaps? Music anyway. Still blank screen.
  • Some ponce's voice coming out of my TV speakers (TV speakers! WTF! I didn't even know my TV had speakers!)
  • More blank screen.
  • Wait.
  • Ctrl/alt/delete blank screen.
  • Hit reset button.
  • Shut down computer.
I'll go back to it on Sunday.

Thanks. Most of the faff was due to my stupidly small 250GB SSD and my ma-hoosive collection of Assetto mods. pCARS 2 was pretty efficiently packed as well so I totally underestimated its install size. I should have just moved Assetto to my HDD and been done with it.

The other issues I'm sure won't manifest on next boot up, I just didn't have time during lunch to try.

Get a PC. And VR. I've had more trouble with consoles in the past. PC gaming has been a piece of piss.

Thanks. I found these pretty good for tarmac, but I can barely feel the pianos. Even big ones feel a bit too muted. Tested at Fuji.

Two things I can't figure out.

Where I turn the steering wheel off, and where I change AI settings.
Wheel can be turned off in Options -> Gameplay -> Onscreen Guides & Display

I wonder how long we have to wait to start seeing how this performs on the x. As much as I'm enjoying it on the xbone, it's a bit of a dog. A pro+ jump from this baseline should be quite drastic.

Perhaps I'm blind; is TC adjustable like R3E or AC or is it just on or off? I can't seem to locate a setting apart from it being on or off.

Authentic is the best way to go, but if you set to off you can go with low or high settings for those.

Again, nobody having trouble downshifting H pattern cars?

I know some about auto blip, ECU mapping and rev matching, but something is off. Cars should not be getting stuck on neutral in these situations.

I must have some settings just totally wrong, because i´ve never had this problem in AC, which simulates clutch very well, so i´m just curious that nobody else has had this problem.

After installing just quickly tried out one of the Community launch events. For those that need something to chase, have a go. Mine after few laps was 1.35.00 (yep could not resist a post after such a nice round number) Shame that the Live track tech is not part of the replays (at least quick ones), so track is a lot wetter than it looks in replay.

Replay video Sugo in the rain Nissan Skyline GT-R (1.35.00) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMJDdIKiUoY&feature=youtu.be

And now bed time ;)

I know that you are quite fast and knew I couldn't really beat you, but gave the community event a go anyway. Took me a few laps to even get the track layout, never driven there before in any game, but that car, track and weather is a great combo! Really had fun.

My last lap was a 1.35.9xx, but I wasted about half a second by going wide and even a little off track in the last corner, so your time is not so hard to beat at (probably that's another reason why you posted it), if someone else wants a go at it, I can recommend it, really had fun.

Again, nobody having trouble downshifting H pattern cars?

Nope, didn't have a single mis-shift. Are you sure it's an H-Pattern car and not sequential originally in which you H-pattern shifted two gears at once?
[Edit: I now had many mis-shifts in the Lotus 49, tried different clutch sensitivity, didn't work. I remembered that Niels Heusinkveld (who makes cars for Reiza's sims) said in one video that you don't need to clutch these cars at all just the downshifts are tricky without a clutch sometimes, tried that here and it totally worked. The problem with my mis-shifts was that I wasn't fully off throttle. Seems some cars are sensitive to this, maybe rightfully so, I'm not an expert on transmission tech. Gotto say that downshifting without clutching worked a bit too good for my taste though. In AC and Automobilista I could only do clutchless upshifts]

Btw. authentic TCS is more "authentic" in AC and RaceRoom, where you can dial through presets from the cockpit and not choose the exact amount of slip like in pCARS2. Also TCS in AC is complexer than just slip-threshold. Though having just the slip-threshold is probably authentic for GT race cars.

Note to self. Don't start a 1960s GP races at old Monza (with the oval added) with time progression on 60x.

Doing the last lap in the dark was an experience!

Do you have autoclutch disabled?

Man, people weren't kidding about the ridiculous enforcement of track limits; keeping it within the lines is one thing, but it feels as though you can't so much as kiss some of these apex curbs without you lap being invalidated.

The Race Director really ought to take a deep breath and just chill out.

- HUD editing is somewhat broken on triples
- menus dont register clicks like half of the time
- TC doesnt work on 488 GT3 its stuck on maximum @ TT
- Can't join MP games
- Pedals didnt work until I restarted the game for whatever reason while they worked in drivers
- Server browser filters break after 1 click

First hour experience with PC2.

Actually, it´s not a mis-shift, it´s like the car doesn´t rev back up if you don´t pump the gas, like no engine braking at all.

It ends up being better to just brake a lot and downshift from 5th to 2nd, because doing it normally it´s a waste of time.

I had problems with every H patter car i´ve tried yesterday, the 962, the R30 Skyline, McLaren F1, the 935/80 and to a lesser extent the Audi V8.

Maybe it has to do with braking lock ups, it´s definitely something because to sum up it´s like you put on neutral and just brake, the engine just goes quiet until you hit the gas again.

Do you have autoclutch disabled?

Yes, disabled. Again i drove countless hours on AC with this type of setting, trying to be realistic, and never had a problem with it.

I´ll test a bunch of stuff tonight to identify where the issue is, but i was curious, because it´s so blatantly obvious that i thought other people would comment.

Also,

I do believe cars/gearbox have a protection on to quick downshifting, so maybe slow down your timing/shifting a little to see if that could help.

It was meant as a bit of fun. As I already new the track, I only did 3/4 laps. I have some time this weekend, no F1 ;) , so might have another go.

According to Mr Bell, it's fine and there is no problem with it, people just need to drive within the track limits.

What we need is to make some videos showing the over zealous track limits.

I was having a real hard time last night. It seems like I can't take corners as fast as the AI without losing grip. Playing Formula Rookie with a G29 with default AI settings (difficulty 60 aggression 50) and I kept losing it on corners. I used the in game wheel/pedal calibration (brake or should I say the spring on the G29 pedals is too hard) and also used the Engineer feature to adjust the suspension. However, still can't keep up worth AI on the corners. Turned on the racing line and even when it's blue/green, losing traction. Not sure what's up, but a little frustrating as I didn't have these issues with pCars 1.

Any suggestion?

Thank you for this, I swear I thought my game is broken or something. How is it possible for some cars to drive great with the controller while others handle like I got 4 flat tires. I tried many settings and some cars are simply impossible to drive with the controller. McLaren 720s is the biggest offender, you have to fight with it to even go straight.

Have you spoken to your engineer? If I recall there are two default settings for cars, stable and loose. I think the game defaults to loose? Might want to try stable.

Edit: Is the formula rookie the open wheel one? I just started that last night also. I noticed if you try to corner too sharp you loose the back. Get tight against the walls and make the corner as wide as possible. It’s what helped me anyway. I play also on 60-50 settings and usually win, unless my backend slides out.

Any suggestion?
Is this more or less across the board?
Because I remember it from pCARS1 and many reviewers have said it's a big issue here again: The AI difficulty varies a ton between cars and also tracks. I remember some races in the rain that gave me trouble on 60 difficulty and some formula car I could drive at 100 ai difficulty and gaining 2-3 positions per lap. And it wasn't just that I suck in the rain.

Playing some project cars on my ps4 last night in preparation for today with my thrustmaster t100. Rush home from work, install it, wheel not supported. Absolutely fizzing.

Hmmm this is odd.

In "private testing" mode you can drive on the Nordschleife and sections of it.

But in singular race mode you can't choose that circuit. You can race on the combined version with the GP circuit, but not the Nordschleife on its own.

You can, just make sure you don't have an active motorsport preset. Here I have selected Endurance which affects available cars and tracks.

You mean custom race? I ran a dozen laps of the Nordschleife (sans GP) in custom races last night to shake things down.

God damn Nordschleife in heavy rain had me driving like a grandma ;p

And random, but also ran Spa with random weather and it was pretty amazing when snow or sleet began to fall. At first it was just an effect in my windshield, but slowly and surely I felt the track icing up, and you could see the track surface shifting to a milky gloss as it persisted, eventually getting to the point where I was slip sliding all over the place. Consider me a huge fan of this whole living track 3.0 system they've got going here.

Yeah, that makes sense.

Of course I could not resist to have another go, so after my post I pushed the GT-R a "bit" more. So here is the new challenge for you Tyler to have ago at in the weekend ;) .

I made error just before first chicane and had to steer in early, not the fastest way, as you want to drive on to that entry kerb. not over it and almost lost my rear on entry for last corner (carried bit to much speed from previous corner on to that kerb on the outside, in wet not smart)....so 31s should be possible for me with a cleaner lap.

I am not sure what to make of the game.

With a pad the handling is better but still incredibly twitchy and with wheel i am having issues with getting cars to break. No matter how what kind of technique i use, the car still struggles to slow down for corner.

I am also having difficulties in the wet, it just seems that the AI has a lot more grip than i do and i just cant keep up.

Ah thanks for that. I did have an active motorsport preset.

Just been trying the Nordschleife in the snow. It's very pretty, with vibes of PGR.

Impossible to drive though, as these dents attest.

This was more or less across the board. Going to try that Stable setting, because I had difficulty even qualifying because I couldn't control the car through the turns. Feels like there's something wrong with the wheel almost. Need to mess around with things for sure when I get some time tonight.

Anyone with a CSL Elite seeing the game recognize it as a Thrustmaster wheel? I figured this game would be all set up to utilize the Elite ( I updated firmware).

For those that have dialed in the FFB, have you figured out how to reduce the road feel, while increasing the tire feel? I haven't been able to drive on certain tracks (Long Beach) because the road surface makes it sound like my wheel is going to explode. I'd love maximum tire feel with slight feedback from the track surface.

RAW preset, and lower FX. I believe 0 is no additional road noise.

I would have believed you without a video and I'm fairly sure I could get down to 1:34, but much under it? I don't think I I'm skilled enough, I wanna do a ton of other stuff in the game too, haven't tried snow, haven't tried karts, I wanna du one longer race to see the lap times as the track progresses with more rubber laid down. Sunday is voting day here in Germany with my parents and brother's family. I know, in making excuses I'm a pretty pro-grade sim racer ;D

But how does the H-Pattern shifter so perfectly there for that Skyline and in many other cars I've tried, but in some it's just HOPELESS. I even tried clutch sensitivity=100 and no deadzone. In some cars I rally do mis-shift a ton and it's usually 1-gear up. My last one was the Lotus 98T, way too easy to drive in this game, but fun, except that it can't up with my fast upshifts, if I do it slower it works.

What is this?? Feels like some "if shift time lower than xx, then mis-shift"...if that's true, that's terrible, especially in a modern Formula 1 car - as H-pattern shifting in F1 goes at least. Just as Seattle6418, I'm super bummed out about this now. I drove that car quite a bit in pCARS1, never had a problem with my shifter.
