PUBG dev Bluehole concerned over Fortnite's Battle Royale [Up: Background Both Sides]

Knowledge is power, guard it well
AAA devs were always going to come along, see PUBG, then do it even better. You already know Ubisoft is coming for that ass.

Bluehole better reinvest and get their shit together.

The Xbox exclusivity window may actually end up fucking them in the bum.

I can only imagine what newsgroups looked like when Doom came out alongside the rest of the games that followed. I know that shit is archived, but I'm not going to dig it up.

This is how it works in business. The onus is on them now to finish PUBG proper before bigger development teams copy the formula and release a more polished product that consumers would gravitate towards. The same thing happened with DayZ twiddling their thumbs in "Early Access" for years: now there are more viable alternatives for consumers. It's an arms race now, but consumers will win out in the end.

As a video game consume who never played PUBG, due to a lack of PC, is there any reason why I should be hesitant about having AAA developers/publishers enter this space?

Are there any concerns that with new competition PUBG profit would decrease and potentially hurt or slow their future development?

I'm excited to be able to play the genre and I would like to see this on the Fox Engine, and knowing Konami they just might do it.

When the money starts making you say dumb stuff. Heres an idea, just make a better game? How many clones did minecraft have and continue to have yet its still the dominating game in that genre? They've already carved out a massive piece of the market for themselves. Now its all about keeping those customers.

why would you want it on the fox engine?

MGS5 graphics, open world (semi? I never tried the game), and imagine Big Boss' gameplay mechanics. Stealthy, and lots of weapons and toys/vehicles, Fox Engine also runs incredibly good, but for the amount of stuff that's normally on screen. No idea how well it would do with so many players to keep track of.

An free version of Battle Royale on a console where PUBG isn't available yet? Yeah, that's definitely gonna eat away at the potential consumers for PUBG.

There's no hesitation. You see Epic implementing it into FortNite, and Rockstar added a similar mode in GTAV called Smuggler's Run last month. But adding in modes to existing games is all you're going to see right now. It's going to take a bit of time before you see a AAA game or its multiplayer built around the concept. But you can be sure that it's happening. The game is far too popular for other studios to not pay attention. Next year there should be a new Battlefield game. I'd say you can bank on it having a mode like this.

I don't really see a controversy here. The game has blown up. They are making more money than they ever really planned too. Carbon copies from AAA devs with deeper pockets were always going to happen. You don't get to own a gameplay concept. They will probably do it better with a lot more polish.

Other devs mentioning your game should be taken as a positive. It's also press for your game and shows they clearly are inspired by it. Use the money you have, make a 2nd game that's even better with the same sort of polish a AAA game has, and you'll be fine.

YOU own that genre and market right now. Use that leadership spot to make a better version of the game, instead of panicking over others making better versiona.

Welcome to the free market.

It seems silly to me because player unknown literally went company to company rehashing this idea and this is the one that stuck.

I would be more concerned about him jumping ship again.

I don't understand this weird downplay of platforms here. It PUBG isn't on PS4 until the middle of next year or something, that leaves a huge opportunity for another game to become established. That's not console wars or something, just basic logic. I'm trying Fortnite on PS4 purely because PUBG isn't available. A lot of other people are going to do the same.

Yup. Would love to dive into PUBG, but my laptop can't handle it. And since the X1 is getting it first, might as well try out Fortninte BR on the PS4 when it drops next Tuesday to scratch that BR itch.

Do these guys not know how the industry works or has worked the past 3 decades? Every single genre exists because one game came and blew everyone away and others copied it or copied and improved on it.

Absolutely. The genre is pretty compelling as a person who hasn't really tried it and I can't on my preferred platform ubtil God knows when. I can't even play it on my secondary platform, Xbone, until maybe this winter?

If some other studio puts out a great version of it and it catches fire, more power to that studio and tough shit to Bluehole.

If there is anyone who already knows how this works, it's Player Unkonwn.

I rarely play multiplayer games, but since Fortnite has building stuff and PvE, I might be more inclined to try the Battle Royale mode offered there.

Also, Nintendo/Nexon should get Itagaki to come back and revive Devil's Third/Online as a Battle Royale game.

Ha it sounds like we be waiting a bit until a true AAA game of this genre. Well I'm okay with the added in modes for now.

I enjoyed MGS5 and thought the engine was good.

Isn't GTA just strait up adding this to GTA online, yeah I guess they should be concerned. PUBG always seemed like basic and bare minimum, I guess they would be concerned about folks with like.... money.
GTA5 already added it at the end of August.

That said, it doesn't really play much like PUBG. It's a very blatant copy of it its progression style, right down to the parachute jump in, the item scavenge, and the shrinking yellow circle.

But it's basically like a co-op Twisted Metal of sorts (or just think BF vehicle deathmatch, really)... in practicing, there's no scavenging per se. You basically can easily grab the only weapon and vehicle you want right at the start, so basically it's just 2 or 4 teams quickly grabbing their solo or duo vehicles in the first few minutes, and the rest of the game is a short vehicular combat with pretty heavy bullet sponges. The decreasing circle is rarely a factor at all as games often end before it really 'alters' the gameplay or pressures players. I've put in probably a good 8-10 hours into it and I've only ever seen the ending 'do or die' phase twice =p

It's a decent amount of fun but I wouldn't say it's a PUBG clone in terms of actual gameplay, but rather more a sort of co-op Twisted Metal battle royale with some obvious PUBG 'thematic' elements.

That said, now that the 'PUBG' mechanics are in place for its 'vehicle PUBG' (it's called Motor Wars, by the way), they could probably easily make a more gun-focused version, too. GTA5 is such a poor open world shooter though (fun cover shooter) that I would probably still prefer the vehicle version -- I'd be much more interested in GR Wildlands doing a PUBG clone. Huge world with amazing level design, huge array of weapons and upgrades, and slower, tactical (albeit more mechanical and rigid) gunplay. Not sure how well the net code would be optimized for it though; game handles 30+ NPCs pretty well but dunno about 30+ online players.

You know blizzrd are bound to come up with something like this
I'd re-sub to WoW if they added a PUBG mode where you jump off a zeppelin into the entire Plaguelands or Grizzly Hills + Howling Fjord, and then have to scavenge 'Diablo 2 ironman' style for weapons, equipment, even bandages or camping gear, to be the last man standing at a center tower haha.

Throw in some basic Warcraft 2-3 style siege weapons to complement basic defensive object building, a la Fortnite, and it's game over -- I've got my new online for the year.

Competition is good and honestly it's a positive thing that people have an alternative if PUBG does no improve much in comparison with Fortnight or other games which are similar.

Mgsv has some of the best tps shooting and mechanics /controls around. It would be a great fit for this kind of gameplay
haha yeah, ditch the alternate dimension red lyrium zombie crap and just make a Metal Gear Survive into a PUBG clone set in South Africa, and at the center of the map is where Venom and Diamond Dogs clear the path for Outer Heaven to be built.

I'd settle for just adding a battle royale mode to the existing MG Survive concept tho too ;p even that would be fortunate and unlikely tho imo considering konami's talent at wasting a good game and engine.

I mean, they didn't, but as things stand right now Fortnite's Battle Royale mode is almost exactly PUBG in the Fortnite engine. UI and color choices, exact same structure etc. I don't think Bluehole has a legal case, but I hope for more from the Battlegrounds clones we're going to get

And PUBGs is almost exactly H1Z1's battle royale. What's your point? I'm not sure it matters that the same dude was the one designing it when it's still a game made by another studio. It seems like some extremely hypocritical sour grapes.

When I heard of pubg I thought it was a generic ripoff of h1z1. And I was right. Battlegrounds playerunknown was/is also such an awful name. Good thing the pubG thing happened.

And not just that, but one that has the majority market share this generation. It's like backing Beta when VHS is giving it away for free.

Just wait it out. Im playing the ghost recon beta in the meantime to keep me busy til tuesday.

That would be a hilarious waste of money when you can just wait a couple of days and have it for free.

Or I could just wait for four more days to get it for the low low price of free.

It's free to play from the 26th. Excited to give it a try.

Ok ok but to be fair I have to watch my daughter all week so it's hard for me to really enjoy games during the week.. :p

Pretty silly of the PUBG devs to create a whole story about this (and its clearly going to go legally nowhere for them), its just going to increase the other games playerbase .

It won’t much. If Fortnite wasn’t appealing to you before now, I don’t think it will be even with the addition of a battle royale mode.

Isnt it free though?Pretty sure its a standalone download, and you dont have to own the actual game.

I will give it a shot.
