SNES mini teardown confirms recycled NES mini tech

Exactly what I was expecting.

It's funny how it's $20 more expensive anyway. At least it comes with an extra controller.

I doubt the NES Mini was a very high profit item for Nintendo when you factor in manufacturing costs, shipping costs, third party game royalties and retail margin. I can't blame Nintendo for charging more for this one.

They sold us the same thing again, but with different games?

The power issue doesn't seem like a concern. What I'm more curious about is how they would run both NES and SNES games on the same type of hardware. I remember reading and interview from Eurogamer (I think?) where they spoke with a guy who made one of the most popular SNES emulators, and said that's it's very hard to do so, even with powerful PCs.

It requires a fairly hefty PC to do cycle-accurate emulation of something like the SNES, IIRC, which is probably what you're remembering. Good-enough or excellent emulation is possible with far less.

As expected and hoped for.

It makes financial sense for Nintendo not to have to set up a new production run for the boards. Trust me, if they had changed the boards then there would have been no chance at all of the NES Mini Classic re-release that's happening next year.

I'm not sure why anyone should have expected anything different here? It's not like Super Nintendo emulation needs more than an ARM Cortex A7 / Mali combination to run it. Nintendo likes to stick with the same hardware suppliers through multiple projects.

A Raspberry Pi can run everything from Vectrex all the way to Dreamcast on the same hardware.

Same thing, just a bunch of new roms on it, people buy it like stupid.

Sometimes I don't understand humans.

I and a few other people I know bought it to have two brand new controllers to use with superior pc emulators like Higan. New old stock original controllers are damn pricey these days so for that alone its worth it.

For $80 you're getting:

- 21 games including one that literally isn't available legally anywhere else
- A small, no-set up console to play them on
- 2 high-quality SNES controllers
- The ability to play said games in HD with filters, borders, etc
- A HDMI cable and a Micro USB

Can you point me to where I can get all that for at least the same price?

Really?

I mean, c'mon, it's not like everyone wants to mess with hacking and the like... seems quite easy to me to see how lots of people could see this as an interesting piece of hardware even if the internals are exactly the same.

Not that I think it actually matters to the average user, mind you.

Hey there. Can you link me to the officially licensed reproduction of my favorite video game console of all-time, that easily hooks up to my TV right out of the box and comes with two reproductions of the original authentic controller? I want my stupid human brain to be enlightened before I willingly give money for a product I find attractive.

An obvious move. I'm been saying this would probably be the case since the SNES mini was announced. The hardware is already more than capable enough, there's no point reengineering it.

Why do we have to go through this raspberry pi talk everytime? We know it exists. We just want the nostalgia factor. Pi doesn't give us that.

I for one am appalled that Nintendo didn't spend the last year on R&D to develop a whole new Hardware.

Essentially this means it should be easy enough to get the rest of the SNES library on this thing.

Well that explains why they stopped selling the NES Mini...

Not really. Nobody was pointing a gun to their heads to make them release the SNES mini this early. They could have kept selling NES minis until demand was met, then switch to SNES after that.

They sold us the same thing again, but with different games?

They sold you bytes, which is the same thing you've been buying for several decades.

Well you can emulate SNES games on a potato pretty much so it doesnt need much HW power.

I remember i used to emulate NES and SNES games on shitty school computers like 15 or so years ago.

Also they're gonna sell this thing as a family product anyways. Families aren't interested in no damn raspberry pi's.

I know mine isn't.

You're missing the point, Mr. Professionally Outraged. The poster was interested in how the same hardware is running both NES and SNES. The point is that the same hardware can run all kinds of legacy video game software.

Can all the people who failed to secure a SNES mini pre-order shut up about RasberryPis. It's getting real old. Everyone here knows what they are/where to find them.

Haha. That made me laugh.

My bad.

But in my defense, we know that pi talk is coming anyway.

It's kind of interesting for a "Yakuza supporter" to complain about something being a repackaged version of it's predecessor.
Like, what do they say about people who live in glasshouses ?

Because someone asked how Nintendo managed to run NES and SNES games on the same hardware, and they just pointed out that the Pi can do that and more. As you would know if you bothered to read the post they were replying to instead of rushing out this pointless hot take.

For fuck's sake...

Makes it easily hackable to add new games, excellent. What are 10 must have games that are missing from the SNES Classic lineup?

Go.
