SNES mini teardown confirms recycled NES mini tech

Because someone asked how Nintendo managed to run NES and SNES games on the same hardware, and they just pointed out that the Pi can do that and more. As you would know if you bothered to read the post they were replying to instead of rushing out this pointless hot take.
I already apologized, If you bothered checking before posting this :p

Why would they develop two different hardwares if the one for the NES Mini was already powerful enough to emulate the SNES?

You "apologized" (to the extent that "well someone will do the thing I accused you of anyway" is any kind of apology) while I was replying to you; not exactly the same as not bothering to read what you're replying to. But hey, whatever makes you feel beyond reproach.

That's okay - I'll buy it a third time for the N64 mini to be honest.

It's also easily moddable, so I can bring in the games I'm missing from the stock version.

Ok whatever. I apologized to the guy, and I know the pi talk is coming. Simple as. Prove me wrong.

Expected this and makes me feel stupid for still wanting one when I already have a modded NES Classic that does everything it does + an 8bito SNES controller.

Makes it easily hackable to add new games, excellent. What are 10 must have games that are missing from the SNES Classic lineup?

Go.

Axelay, Parodius, Chrono Trigger, FFV, Final Fight Guy, TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, Super Bomberman, Shadowrun, Ogre Battle, Sim City

The power issue doesn't seem like a concern. What I'm more curious about is how they would run both NES and SNES games on the same type of hardware. I remember reading and interview from Eurogamer (I think?) where they spoke with a guy who made one of the most popular SNES emulators, and said that's it's very hard to do so, even with powerful PCs.

It's because that said emulator is designed to perfect emulate all snes components, everything that would run on a SNES will run on bsnes exactly as it should. The Nintendo emulator just need to run certain games "perfectly enough". There is a huge difference.

Games I'd consider adding:

RPGs
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Secret of Evermore
  • Lufia 2

Platformers
  • DKC 2
  • Earthworm Jim 2

Sports/Racing
  • NBA Jam
  • International Superstar Soccer Deluxe
  • Uniracers
  • Jimmy Connor's Pro Tour Tennis

Honorable mention to Actraiser, R-Type and Demon's Crest. Damn, the SNES was good.

So you're saying even Nintendo can't run perfect emulations of SNES games on their hardware?

Eh, I'm not sure this is as alright as some are saying... They're essentially selling the same hardware for a higher price with a new shell. Imagine Sony started selling a slim PS4 that has exactly the same hardware inside, but is the only PS4 able to run new games.

That's it. The only thing preventing the NES Mini from running SNES software (and vice-versa) is Nintendo itself, because the hardware is more than capable. It's the kind of thing I'd expect people to consider anti-consumer.

You're point being?

My SNES is ancient now and should really be retired and the games I regularly go through are all on this classic (barring the odd few). If I was dying to play them I can boot up the real SNES, but this new little console will scratch an itch for easier than setting up my real SNES all the time and retuning my TV (Don't ask me why, it doesn't like to save any kind of analogue input so its a retune every time!)

Plus these games:

International Superstar Soccer Deluxe
Jimmy Connor's Pro Tour Tennis
Actraiser

Absolutely amazing and wish they were on the system so much!!

It makes no difference really. I don't think anyone was thinking they were getting the original SNES hardware, right? We're paying for roms and a nice bit of plastic.

Hopefully it can be modified in the same way the NES mini can - it was fun to tinker with it and use it for emulation.

Does the NES Classic play the included SNES classic games out of the box?

Does the NES Classic look like the SNES Classic?

Does the NES Classic contain two SNES controllers?

In 2017, can I buy the NES Classic at retail price?

Not allowing users to run any game they want is not anti-consumer, it's the entire basis of being able to sell games. Your analogy is flawed unless this hypothetical new PS4 also came with as many PS4 games as the SNES mini does, which would be an amazing deal at any price (let alone at sub-100$).

Seriously, what's getting people so hung up about all this? You're paying for the console AND the games. It's no different from selling differently priced PS4 bundles with different games. It took you guys this long to realize all the games you're buying are just a series of 1s and 0s?

Redoing it for NTSC SNES.

Chrono Trigger, Ogre Battle, Actraiser, Harvest Moon, Demon's Crest, Space Megaforce, DKC2, Mario All-Stars, Tetris Attack, TMNT4.

I could keep going so easily too. This thing needs like 60 games.

That board is probably the only part they could get a deal for, and it happens to run both snes and nes games well. Why wouldn't they use it in different products?

Your example doesn't exactly stand: Nes and Snes mini aren't iterations of the same platform.

They should have included the nes emulator and all the games then.
And the NES controllers as well as a veil so I can't tell it's a mini SNES...

I think too many systems and you winds up confusing like those licensed SEGA ones where half the games are random shovelware that are not even Mega Drive, Game Gear or Master System games.

Why would you need the original cart? If you own a SNES Mini, you can certainly rip the Star Fox 2 ROM off there.
In fact in terms of tools needed it is a lot easier (a PC with some software, no need for specalised dumping hardware). The hardest part is getting the SNES mini.

Then I suppose you get into the matter of is format shifting legal wherever you are in the world and given it is a ROM already you can argue there is no shirting at all going on.

fakedit:I nearly wrote format shirting :S
