Maybe get southgate to wear a pocchetino or mourinho mask for the world cup, maybe that way we won't suck. Trick kane into thinking his playing for tottenham.

Typical England. Put in shit performances but still beat small nations then crumble when they actually play a good team.
I'd say this was actually far below par by 'typical' previous campaigns standards. Hodgson teams were actually much better in qualifying and would regularly blow away small teams with one of the best winrates in tournament qualifying in the entire world.

We're literally worse now than under Hodgson...

Fuck Gareth Southgate.

Basically, my girlfriend got home just before and wondered why I wasn’t cheering a goal.

We just didn’t deserve it. Our team has a fantastic roster of players but the team just plays like shit.

"Well, they made it very hard for us" etc.
.

Gareth Southgate praises the defending of Slovenia and says 'it's not a coincidence when you keep scoring late goals.'

Yeah this situation is like Groundhog Day but with no happy ending or even much fun along the way. As mentioned above Hodgson had a mostly outstanding qualifying record, some poor performances too but 6-0, 8-0 and such at least happened. Whether that was worth anything in the end is debatable but looking now I don't know if I should've enjoyed those games more than I did. Now it's just pass, pass, pass, Stones to Cahill, pass, pass, Henderson pass to Cahill, cross field pass to Bertrand, pass, pass, Kane finds Walker, he passes back to Cahill...

It's even more irritating when Hart comes out with a "screw the critics" like he did, and Kane did after the Malta game. They honestly think the end result is all that matters, they can't all be this deluded and sleepwalking into yet another embarrassing tournament surely?

I don't even know if the manager is to blame. Players like Oxlade Chamberlain and Henderson are just not good enough with too little competition in their places and Sterling, Rashford and Kane (Alli too) look way less effective in an England shirt than their club's. They're not the only players over the last decade or so where that happens to be the case either.

I don't know where we go from here really. I'll be supporting them of course and hoping against hope I see a decent performance at least, but if the expected happens I don't know. It's just so... I don't know bleak? Sluggish? Apathetic? I can't really sum up the situation in a word. There's just no excitement, the paper planes, empty seats, Mexican waves and pitch invander sum it up too. It's just so boring and predictable...

I'm not blaming the pitch, stadium or the fans for the shit performance, but when the national team are playing in an 85% full, soulless stadium with shit fans on a chewed up pitch from an American Football game the week before, that says all you need to know about the FA's priorities and the state of the England national team.

The FA is all about making money and wanking each other off. They don't care about investing in quality, local facilities or doing the hard work of ensuring there is continuity between age groups and quality coaching widely available. The players and Southgate are just a product of that system.

I say scrap the FA, create a "new FA" which is actually accountable to the fans, sell Wembley to the NFL, plough the proceeds into building as many 3g pitches possible with dedicated, trained coaches and have England play at decent stadiums from St Mary's to St James.

Yep I agree with this definitely. The FA only care about how much money they can make from the tournaments, betting partners, not bothering to check their employees' backgrounds, manager appointments whatever. All secondary to money, money, money.

Having the national team go around the country while Wembley was being built was such a great idea. They should do that again. Give local fans a chance to attend games instead of the same sterile Wembley atmosphere.

Good luck Colombia!

Edit:

Legit question. Has there ever been a good football game played at the new Wembley? Feels like that soulless bowl sucks the life of the games.

I get the feeling that England’s World Cup is gonna be even worse than the last one, at least there was a tricky group excuse then.

Southgate couldn’t inspire a bus load of lads on a stag do to go out on the piss. He’s pretty much a poor mans Roy Hodgson.

For all the shit Roy Hodgson gets. He's an OK manager, he's proved himself somewhat at some clubs. Southgate has done fuck all, if he didn't have a pretty successful playing career he would be a nobody.

Southgate only got the job cos he was the cheap option and he’s unlikely to cause any kind of scandal. It’s true that he’s probably still living off the fact that he seemed cleverer than the average footballer and had a good head on his shoulders as a player, he’s done fuck all as a manager.

I still think Big Sam was hard done by, I don’t even remember what it was that he did wrong other than it turned out to be not as big of a deal than it was made out to be.
