Run and ignore the bandits.

So I've come across two totally OP bandits when traveling to Witchwood (after Quina). They kill me and the pawns in two hits and I can barely inflict a scratch on them. Took me like 20 minutes just to take one out and that was after being extremely cautious. Are they supposed to be there?

Sometimes in this game you'll be managing mobs in an area fine, then suddenly huge difficulty spike appears in form of new group of mobs or a monster, then after it's fine again. Just run past when it happens if it too much.

Those bandits, where the road splits, get tougher to the right, while Wichwood to left just gets some wolves.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm gonna return to the main quest now and at least upgrade to an advanced vocation before doing more side content/notice board quests.
 
Does anyone have server connection issues? I can rent pawns easily, but wen i rest at inns it simply won't connect. I also lost around 15 k of Rc due to this issue.
Maybe double check that you have your game set to Online in settings? If you have your game set to Offline then you won't see any connection progress/status indicator when you rest at an inn. You probably already know that, but I have a few friends who had that problem and didn't realise.

I've completed the quest already but I was just wondering if that was intended (not supposed to be there yet) or a bug or something. So far I can't exactly tell if I'm under-leveled or over-leveled for certain quests yet. The lizard monsters in the well quest took me some time too.. I was at level 9 at the time.

Damn. By the way, the BBI marker that appears on the docks near the beginning.. Is that something that's optional and can be accessed any time? I feel like I don't wanna go there yet.

That's the easiest one to miss, but it's also kind of a big deal. Up to you. If you're at the point where you've only just missed it, I'd be tempted to restart. That said, it's easy to pick up in NG+.

I mean, if there is ever a fucked up side-quest reason to star over, that would be it. It is still very early in the game and the quest and its follow up are relatively plot relevant.
Is there a way to determine story quest from optional side quest?
Generally speaking, the game doesn't straight out tell you, but they are easy enough to determine. The story quests will always be either a direct chain from one to another or gotten from very specific individuals.

Still pretty early I guess. Escorted the snake head to capital, reclassed to Magic Archer (which is supper cool; I was expecting just a hybrid but I didn’t realize it’d change the fundamentals of the archery mechanic), then hopped back to start on a whim and did this quest into the well and then into the Witchwood.

Now I’m back in Capitol and there’s something mystical underground that the Pawns want me to investigate.

Not sure how I feel on this one yet. Combat started cool with big monsters and climbing on them and specific weak points... but it’s just been bandits and wolves since. New Magic Archer abilities are fun at least. But after the FFXII remaster, it’s so nuts having these totally arbitrary Pawns with me.

Game is super janky. And super aimless. Maybe jank becomes charm and aimless becomes open and exhilarating? Time will tell.

I still don’t know shit-all about crafting. It’s weirdly not explained at all? My bag is full of rotten meat and shit.

Can you switch back to normal after starting hard mode? Really wanted to save that for subsequent playthroughs.

You will have plenty of big monsters to come, almost to the point of repetition as you feel about wolves now.

The Pawns have their own charm. Granted I had a couple RL friends playing simultaneously on 360, so I took their pawns along with me, and it was always fascinating to see them evolve with every update stop to the pawn lobby. Actually felt like I was exploring the world in a pseudo co-op experience. Knowing my own pawn growth dictated the companion role in their party made the concept novel and very interesting. We used to even swap Pawn stories of things they would in crazy encounters(both amazing and stupid). But it wouldn't quite be the same just taking random ones along I suppose.

I found eventually I stuffed almost all crafting mats into storage. You can spend some time just merging everything together(lightens your load, and the crafting interface is far better in the storage menu). Once you start to get a feel for what you may need, it gets easier to just merge stuff and take only what is necessary. Early on, just combine everything and make discoveries to fill out your recipes, especially with food as it goes stale and moldy over time. Airtight containers keep stuff fresh, but again don't fret so early in, you'll get quests and recipes that call for that stuff later. Keep some healing items on hand, but the rest can sit in storage until you get farther.

If the item description says "time sensitive", it means that it'll go rotten in time (mostly fruit and meat, but also some flowers from memory). If you're consuming stuff to boost health or stamina, use the time sensitive stuff first. Otherwise just sell it.

You can use Airtight Flasks to permanently preserve those things, but they're best left for the really good time sensitive items (e.g. ambrosial meat, etc.).

People: stop worrying about stat growth.

It's literally meaningless. Gear matters far, far more. With good dragonforged gear and Periapt buffing items, you can be extremely powerful and not worry about damage output, even on Hard Mode.

Experiment with vocations. Stick with one you like, or change constantly to unlock augments and experiment with weapons, or whatever. Play how you like, but don't worry about the stat growth because min-maxing is a total waste of time and I guarantee you that the game will not be as fun, especially for a first playthrough.

I got to play it today.

New things that weren't on the ps3 version

Pawn chatter on and off option
Infliction not bugged.

And in my opinion the best is hot key items to the directional pad.

Simply go into tue inventory press x on an item anf you will see that it tells you to press triangle to hot key it to one of the directional pad keys.

To use them while out of your inventory press
and hold R1&R2 and any of the d pad you assigned your item.


Now, if someone that has (preferable )a ks8000 tv would you mind telling me you DDDA brightness and darkness settings, I'm currently experiencong a nasty, nasty banding.

Having more fun now. Around level 15 and trying out Magick Archer since it's so recommended. Pawns are absolutely useless as fuck though so I'm missing something with them. They all die instantly now. Guess I need to go get higher level ones? Rook sucks.

Magick Archer is a cool class (heck, the best class) but it's funny in the way that in order to maximize it, you really need to steal augments from other classes since by large its own augments are kinda useless, lol.

And why the hell are you still using Rook at level 15, hahaha.

Im enjoying the game so far but there are definitely aspects fighting against that enjoyment. Things that just seem clunky and unintuitive. Like the lack of any level indication on quests or enemies. Why does my character even have a level if I have no way to con an enemy or quest in relation to it? The pawn system Im still coming to grips with as I just realized "rented" pawns dont level up with you. And Im several hours in at this point and Im still in the same garbage equipment I first picked up in the fishing village. Do you get better stuff from drops? Crafting? Vendors? Who knows at this point. Its a game that seems designed to send you online searching for answers.

Yep. After it restarts you in hard mode you can go into options and switch it back to normal. I had to do this after forgetting to make sure and save the merchant being attacked when you first leave the first town.

The capitol city has gear. Go to the Pawn camp, fight a boss, then escort a cart. In fact, do all those things right away so you unlock the other classes.

Yeah I went to the pawn camp in the city and immediately got a quest to go down in some dungeon there - is this the boss youre talking about? I stepped in there and then just noped back out thinking of the well in the fishing village. The game gives no indication where you will be over your head until your party is suddenly dead.

That’s the right city but don’t go on to the Pawn area. There’s like an open air market when you first arrive, featuring an armorer shop.

You do know about Port Crystals and Eternal Ferrystone, right? Which basically translates to free fast travel to various locations? (three are fixed locations, the rest you can decide where yourself)

And I honestly don't get the stamina complaint.

TBH I don't think Magick Archer is as fun as some other classes, although it dominates in Bitterblack Isle. I used others for the main game, and then switch to MA in the post-game/BBI.

As to pawns, when you hire someone else's pawn it's frozen in time effectively. It won't level up, and the way it changes in the pawn owner's game doesn't get automatically reflected in yours. When you finally release that pawn, the rating, rift crystals, gifts, and items you equipped on the pawn, and any new item/quest knowledge, get cached, and the owner will get them all the next time they rest at an inn (which is also when any changes to their pawn get updated for the game's hiring system). If you then go to hire that same pawn again from a riftstone, you'll see the most recent version of their pawn.

Only you can level up your main pawn, and obviously the same goes for other players. So the game is built around encouraging people to regularly swap out their hired pawns.

On the bright side, if you were using underlevelled pawns then you would've been getting more xp than you would've otherwise :)

Most of your gear upgrades will come from buying stuff, and then enhancing your gear at vendors using materials. A big part of the game (for me anyway) is finding what materials are required, and then hunting them down in the world. You do get the best stuff via equipment drops, but they're generally tied to big events (i.e. powerful enemies, quests, important locations) rather than being stuff you get from random encounters.

This is very true, and the Souls games are the same. They very much let you off the leash and expect you to learn from your mistakes. It's both a blessing and a curse.

BTW, before completing that quest you're talking about, consider heading back to Cassardis for a quick visit.

There's fast travel, and your stamina obviously increases in line with your character during the game. That said, the game is very much about exploration, planning your routes, trying to make it back to cities/safe places before darkness falls. The fast travel system in DD is designed around that.

I haven't had the chance to test any of the fast travel stuff. I found one item that mentions it, but that's it so far. I definitely get irritated in the course of play when I'm just trying to cross an empty field and have to stop to catch my breath two or three times. It's fine in combat at a resource management thing, but it's annoying as hell for basic point to point movement. It grates on me more than most people, I'm guessing.

Get used to it for BBI :)

The fast travel system involves Portcrystals (think of them like 'train stations') and Ferrystones (your 'ticket' to jump to the train stations). In this version of DD you get an eternal ferrystone, so you can use it an infinite number of times. The only limiting factor is that you have to collect and then place the Portcrystals yourself, and there's a limited amount of those. The upside is that you can put the fast travel points wherever suits you, which is nice.

On the subject of stamina, the idea is to stop sprinting before you completely drain the stamina bar, and just jog for a little bit while your stamina bar automatically refills.

I just noticed an idle animation of my Pawn supossedly eating an apple which i don't think there was in the PS3 version.Kinda strange (but very much appreciated) that they added small details like this.

But it seems like you can only have one character? and why do I have to do the tutorial again??

I wouldn't bother if I were you. Once you reach Gran Soren, you'll be able to change the look of your main and pawn character, incl. their gender. It costs money but the fee is ridiculously low. Might as well be free of charge.
 
You know how you set how your pawn speaks; can you view what choices you picked?


I remember my Pawn had the "'tis a troubling foe!" line, but I can't remember if they just had one voice set, or if they could mix and match from different ones.
