Gundam Versus |OT| The World, Western release out now!

I came from a similar background although with some experience playing non-competitive Virtual-On in my teens, and the transition hasn't been bad for me at all.

Mechanically, using your individual attack and basic movement options isn't hard. There's a step up in execution when you start integrating movement cancels to avoid attack and landing recovery, and also when combining different movement options to cover ground more safely and efficiently. But overall, execution isn't particularly difficult.

The mindset or approach to attacking can be considerably different though. The main thing to keep in mind is that the game is generally less focused on combos and mixups and block-and-punish, and more about movement and positioning. Movement is both offense and defense: attacks are avoided by outspeeding them or cutting their tracking, and moving in at an opportune time or angle lets you land attacks that the opponent is less likely to avoid.

You'll likely have an easier time easing into it if you've played anime/poverty fighters like the Touhou fighters, Acceleration of Suguri, or maybe even Arcana Heart. In terms of mainstream comparisons, Smash would be somewhat analogous in terms of how the neutral flows.

It's a very easy game to pick up as far as execution goes. Everything is easy to do and pull off. So no issues there.

The real learning curve comes from positioning, managing your boost meter and ammo, and also learning how to properly punish landings. On top of that, it's also a team game so you have to cooperate and prioritize the appropriate targets. It takes a bit to get used to everything, and it can be very frustrating at first. I was initially very frustrated before it finally clicked with me when I used to play EXVS. But, if you think it looks cool, definitely give it a shot. With the Western release there's plenty of new players online who are still learning how to play, so it's the best time to jump in.

Awesome, thanks so much for the info. I'll pick it up for sure, you all give me hope. Plus I can just play with GundamGAF. Should end up getting it this weekend.

I very well may tonight! Wish me luck in bat....

*died

LOL! I have to say, Death Scythe and Barbados are the bane of my existence. I hate, HATE seeing those sons of bitches coming over the horizon against me. So even if you suck right now, just know you will still be giving players like me a minor panic attack just by being that bat bastard.

I haven't played Deathscythe much in this game but he was one of my go-to melee suits in the last one. His main melee move to use at neutral is his boost dash forward melee. It is fast and stuns on hit so abuse it wherever you can. After that you can do a melee combo while they are frozen. Generally, I liked to do his 6B(side melee) string and then input 2B (down melee) for the cinematic finisher. Not sure if it's his best damage offhand, but it's pretty effective and easy to remember.

His charged Main seems pretty good in this game too. Especially for opponents waking up off the ground. After throwing it you can boost dash and harrass them.
Man, reading this makes me feel good. I'm excited to be learning a new game. I used to feel this way about Tekken before 6 haha. But maybe it's the genre that has me more excited about learning it and getting into Gundam in general.

Thanks for the tips.

Hahaha.

You know though, I forgot I wanted to pick up a stick and practice with that before heading online. So unless I pick one up tonight, my death on the battlefield will have to wait.

Don't let your longing for new hardware prolong you from making your glorious online debut! But if you do get a stick tonight you wont regret it. Welcome to Fightstick Club. Come join the party in the Super "NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread" II TURBO thread.

Just to note for folks but this game is totally playable on pad or stick. The control scheme is simple enough that you can do both pretty easily. Both have their own pros and cons to them so just find what you're comfortable with and make adjustments to the schemes to make it even easier for you.

agree. It's all down to preference. Playing with stick doesn't automatically make you a better player. The current EVO champs use controllers fwiw.

One advice I'll give for those who use controller: use the d-pad instead of the analogue stick. It'll make quick inputs much easier.

I'm a 100% pad player when it comes to traditional fighters.

I think I just want a stick to feel like I'm piloting a mech instead of twisting my fingers around a controller lol.

If you're gonna play pad, you'll want to map Shoot and Melee to shoulder buttons at least. It'll make doing charge attacks while boosting and everything else much easier and less stressful on your hands.

Funnels are mainly used to zone players making them move in the direction you want them to go.

For Nu, funnels are very straight forward. You can input a direction to tell them which side to attack from. You can also hold sub to release more funnels. (You can release all of them but not recommended)
Forgot to mention: While his fin funnel shield is active, you only have access to 1 fin funnel to attack. If you have multiple funnels deployed and active the funnel shield, it'll force recall them back to form the shield.

For Kshatriyas, her funnels has multiple modes. Nab sends them out for all range attack. 8/4/6ab creates a beam fence that stuns. The fence is good for separating the enemy team or denying their movement. It can also be used as a self defense against incoming melee types. 2ab puts out sort of a beam curtain between you and your target. 4/6/Nab are the most useful imo.

I gave Deathscythe my first serious go in this and he's fun as fuck. His melee stuff is basically untouched but his csA and AB are amazing now. I like him a lot more than I did in FB. Was on a really long streak in a lobby with him.

Okay, just had a Providence vs Hi-Nu funnel fight and it was pretty epic.

I've been messing around with Providence and Wing Zero in Casual. They're fun but I'm still not too good with either yet.

Christina still best Navi:

That's a really good idea. I've been tinkering around with binding Boost and Dive to the shoulder buttons, but this seems like it could be easier on execution. Time to hit the training room.

edit: It feels too off for me. I'm just going to stick with Boost to the left shoulder, and Dive to the right shoulder so it's kinda like Titanfall 2's Bumper Jumper button config.

I actually won my first match yesterday, where I felt I actually did OK.
I was playing Sandrock with a Crossbone 1, against two Exias. I died twice, but I got 1 kill and got another to red health. I'm still struggling with boost meter management, but I'm sure I'll get used to that over time. I keep landing with the right stick to refill it, but I think my problem is that instead of boost dashing and holding it, I keep using it to do shoot dashes.

I think my problem is that instead of boost dashing and holding it, I keep using it to do shoot dashes.

Context is important, but actually, in the long run, short dashes are the best way to conserve boost. Continuous boost dash should only be used if you are trying to fly to the other end of the map or if you are trying to dodge things by swerving.

But from the perspective of neutral gameplay, you want to do short dashes to let you lay on firepower while being able to evade.

So as of this morning, my Hori Fighting Commander can no longer go UP or DOWN in the menus. I've tried my Arcade Stick and standard PS4 controller and both of those work...

Plus, once I'm actually in a match, the up and down inputs work just fine. Is anyone else having some weird issue like this? This absolutely sucks!

Does it have an analogue/digital switch?
You can only move the menus with one of those (I forget which). Hopefully it's just that.

Goddamnit when is Nightingale dropping?

I get side eyes for some of my choices in matches and it is not my fault that one of my favorite suits in the franchise happens to be a top tier!

I always liked Nightingale way more than Sazabi, even if the former is as big as a bus in comparison

Not sure why they are lagging with the patch and DLC units. Its affecting matchmaking and well cant even play with friend who have jp version :(

Supposedly there are only so many "slots" on any given day to add stuff to the PSN store, which could explain the DLC delay, but the patch is squarely on them.

The fuck is that move Lupus has that just pins you and beats you over and over and over and over? Just gonna call it LUPUS SMASH because of how insane it is.

I'm enjoying using the Strike Gundam. There are some interesting things you can do with its transformations to ranged and melee mode. Now where is my Athrun with Aegis!

Wow, US just got the patch? I've had it at least since last night (in EU).

So I guess the people I played with a couple hours ago were EU only?

Question from a prospective buyer: is there a single player to speak of or is this basically all multiplayer? The first game in this series I played I fell in love with and that was Gundam vs. Zeta, but I recognize the main reason I loved it so much was the really robust mission mode with alternate endings. I'm not expecting that, but is there something to sink my teeth into other than matchmaking here?

There is a Survival mode (3 ranks, can be played with a friend and with optional stages which bring random players just for those) and a Trial mode (think Arcade with 10 paths or so of increased difficulty). That's it.

It is primarily a multiplayer game.

You are drunk off your colony. I find the Nightingale design abominable--just like I hate how Hi-Nu wrecks the beauty of Nu. Sazabi and Nu are practically my favorite UC designs--only Qubeley sits atop them both. Nightingale seems slow in Versus, but I read that it's just due to his massive size. He's actually quite nimble and plays rather well--at least when I've been on the receiving end of his shenanigans.

So how do I perform CC8B (Death's awakening attack), double tap boost backwards + melee?

Besides what's already been mentioned, there's also a Free Battle mode to set up your own match of 1v1, 1v2, 2v2 or even 1v3. You choose opponents, stage, music, difficulty etc etc. I'm having fun and getting my money's worth as a casual fan and I've only played one online match so far (which was fun, but a slideshow. The replay makes it look like a smooth experience lol)

CC8B is double tap boost, then forward melee.
