So potential switch buyers this holiday can get both zelda BOTW, and Mario Odyssey? Both potential GOTY recipients, let alone maybe even considered GOAT games? This is truly unprecedented.

I wonder who will remain top dog this year. Mario or Zelda
Why fight doe

Uhhh, nope. I wouldn't be surprised if Xenoblade 2 ranks higher once it comes out. Zelda and Mario have those top 2 positions locked.

That's an extremely bold statement, given that virtually nobody here has played two of those titles.

I could also make baseless statements about how Xenoblade 2 is going to be the most boring game released this year.

And BotW's last DLC pack is coming out for the holidays.

Yes, and that'll work out well in the end of year writeups. Just as it will for Horizon, which is also notable for being a new IP and having a strong female protagonist.

All I'm saying is that anyone writing off anything right now is silly. We haven't even played Odyssey and while I doubt it'll disappoint, it's a little early to be calling it GOTY.

That's cool. Really looking forward to the 27th myself.

As to GotY talk...might actually vote this year as I've played many of the core contenders actually. Haven't been able to say that since I started using GAF yet, as I mostly play Nintendo, Japanese console, and PC strategy games. And always lots of old games I've missed.

Right now I'd go (I've played a couple more new releases than these, but these all stood out):

Zelda
Persona 5 (sentimental favorite)
Yakuza 0
Nier Automata
Horizon
Samus Returns
Resident EVII_

with Etrian Odyssey 5 and Mario Odyssey still coming this month. Xenoblade 2 in December too. Also might try Mario Kart and Splatoon this holiday.

I just have to say I'm glad both mario and zelda found their roots again. Eventhough I wasn't the biggest fan of Zelda 1, I really liked its open character. The callback to openworld was refreshing.

The same can be said for the sandbox nature of 3D mario like Super Mario 64 demonstrated. Odyssey is built in that style I wanted again for so long. The game looks stunning. Even better than BotW.

My vote would easily go to Mario if I could play it. However BotW definitely deserves it more for breaking up a stagnant series that relied on a formula for way too long. Mainline Mario games have always shined and felt fresh to me, so it feels like less of surprise to me.

Breath of the Wild is up there with the original Dark Souls in "possibly the best game ever made" territory.

If this Mario even comes close to that... man.

Gonna be a tough decision. That Horizon won't be a part of. lol

Looks fun. Not the biggest Mario fan, but am getting this. Makes it even better I'm getting the Switch bundle that comes with it.

If I am playing a game,it needs to at least attempt to tell a good story, and discuss important themes.

If I am playing for mechanics, its either challenging, and deep or a competitive multiplayer.

Nintendo occupies a middle ground that I find hard to appreciate these days. Really cute, cool sometimes smart game design ideas in a cute looking package that almost always ends up being shallow ,and emotionally, intellectually unengaging.

I've tried ,but that company's games and machines aren't for me.

A GOTY should aim at being more than just "fun!" imo.

It goes without saying that this is just my opinion.Mario continues to sell million of games every single year.

If you feel this way shouldn't you be advocating for like Night in the Woods or Edith Finch instead of the robot dinosaur game?

There really were just so many games this year that all brought something unique and compelling to the table.

In the end, games come down to preferences, and while all of us like to have our tastes validated, it only matters how much you enjoyed the game.

This year was an embarrassment of riches. So many truly superb games came out that cater to a variety of tastes.

What matters is that these unique and different experiences sold well. This signals that the market wants these types of games and not the latest CoD clone or whatever. This is the most important factor.

Nioh
Neir
Zelda
Horizon
Persona 5
Yakuza 0
Likely Mario

All have valid arguments that they are the best game of the year and most if not all are among the best of the generation. Regardless of what wins, enjoy the fact that we will likely get more of these.

Would also add resident evil 7 to that list. That game was an amazing push for VR. This year has been ridiculous in the high quality output end.

Two perfect games from Nintendo in one year, but Gaf's GOTY will still be Horizon. BotW and Odyssey will split the votes of Nintendo gamers but rest will vote for Horizon. No idea what PC crowd could crown as GOTY.

As a person who played both (Zelda & Horizon): Horizon is not even on my current top 10 2017 list.

This isn't how GotY on GAF works and if Horizon wins, it won't be because of any vote splitting by NintendoGAF.

If I vote for BotW as my #1, it gets 10 points. If I vote for Odyssey as my #2, it gets 9 points.
The vote has not been split.

You're also assuming every PS4 owner on GAF is going to vote Horizon as their #1. Heck, there will be plenty of PS4 users on this forum who won't vote for it at all. PS4 had an embarrassment of riches this year.

Absolutely. My point being there really were some truly spectacular games that came out this year and each even the "connoisseurs" would say would be worthy of GotY.

Its a little silly anyway obsessing over GotY, and yet, here we are.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.

If storytelling and themes are so important, you better have bought Prey or so help me God your words are meaningless.

Prey's Storytelling isn't particularly remarkable outside a handful of intriguing moments (it mostly disappears really for better or worse) but the world design is second to none.

I will never hate this game.
Add me to the SS deserved it's score camp. Although I would personally only give it an 9 but I still understand how it received a 10. In many ways I preferred parts of it over Botw. But Botw is more deserving of its 10. A complete shake up of the series and the open world genre. It will be much more influential too. SS had better dungeons, story & combat imo.
