They HAD power. The grid was working. Was it the best in the world? Far from it. But it was working. To put things in perspective every island that got ravaged by a hurricane this year got their power grid decimated. When Irma hit Florida almost the entire State lost power for days and weeks in certain parts. A Cat 5 (Maria off by 2mph) going thru PR would have had the same exact results even if they had a "better" grid considering it was the transmission lines that got damaged and not the actual power generating plants.

If anything Trump is just latching on to the "poor electric grid" as an excuse to not help.

Puerto Ricans are Americans. Would you be so willing to accept having all federal relief efforts being pulled out of Florida or Texas when millions are without power, food, and clean water, when people are dying, since they always get hit by hurricanes and it’s their own fault for rebuilding in a place that gets hit a lot?
