Star Citizen's off-shoot Squadron 42 probably won't make 2017 either

Link.

Last year we waited and waited to hear whether Squadron 42, the single-player and standalone Star Citizen story experience with actors like Gary Oldman in, would be released in 2016, until eventually Cloud Imperium said no, it wouldn't be. Then we started waiting and waiting for a 2017 release instead.

With the CitizenCon event on the horizon for end of October, expectations of a Squadron 42 announcement, or showing, were high. But over the weekend, Cloud Imperium announced Squadron 42 would not be at CitizenCon. Instead it will only be shown during the Holiday Livestream in December, which suggests Squadron 42 will miss 2017 as well.

"Squadron 42 will be the focus of our Holiday Livestream in December, where we will preview some gameplay and share our roadmap for its completion," wrote Chris Roberts.

"We have a large team working on Squadron 42 and we've been making good progress towards achieving my goal to take the Wing Commander style narrative experience to the next level, with first-person gameplay that moves between foot, vehicles and incredible locations all rendered with a fluidity and quality that you normally only see in pre-rendered cinematic scenes. I am confident it is going to be worth the wait; a game that can hold its own with any other triple-A story game.

"I am excited to show you some of this in December."

So, genuine question, what are the odds of this whole thing ending up like Kingdom of Amalur, and what happened to its studio?

Well, this project just fleeces its supporters, rather than unknowing tax payers.

The studio will just undergo massive layoffs when it can't pay them anymore. The IP itself is probably worthless, and the current project, or its intended goal, will have ton of maintenance costs, and a history of unsustainable promises to early investors.

AFAIR their webpage stated that SQ42 would be playable in 2017 (after being updated from 2016?).

The update is to remove the year entirely, which would seem to suggest that SQ42 probably won't make 2018 either.

A few deets:

No Squadron 42 at CitizenCon. Targeted for the holiday stream in December.

"With Star Citizen Alpha 3.0 in Evocati test phase and a lot of our developers working on wrapping up the remaining features and polish needed to get 3.0 into everyone's hands, we have decided to focus CitizenCon on Alpha 3.0 and beyond.

And on the site, this:

went to 2017 last year, and now removed entirely:

I would be shocked if it releases before Q4 2018 at the earliest and most likely 2019 if it releases at all considering the state of the alpha.

People like to shit on Kingdoms of Amalie but I thought it was a pretty great SP game, not that it didn't have its faults (leveling making things too easy).

If Squadron 42 releases at the level KoA was released I would personally be pretty happy.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
It won't make 2018.

It might make 2019, but I'd be surprised.

I'm estimating a 2019 release, if we're lucky.
We'll get the holiday livestream with a roadmap targeting a holiday 2018 release, which will slip like everything does.

I'm surprised the year in the title wasn't a typo. Once they have all the tech in place they can start on building a finished game out of it, but it doesn't sound like they're quite there yet.

I think hes talking about the MMO that got cancelled.

Yes and I am saying even if Star Citizen MMO part gets cancelled and only Squadron 42 releases at a quality level comparable to Kingdoms of Amalur I would be ok with that.

Of course it's better to get the whole package but chances of that are fairly slim.

development takes time, shocking

Tell that to the Dev team who has missed milestone after milestone by years. If you miss your target by what will likely be two years, then the original target was never realistic or honest to the supporters. That's on them, not the fans who are being given a false hope of release year after year.

They call it an off-shoot to Star Citizen, but wasn't this part originally the pitch that got the first backers to pledge to the project?

Yes, but Star Citizen is the universe itself. Squadron 42 is a single player campaign in that universe.

Anyway this news isn't really surprising to anyone following the project. I'm just happy 3.0 is finally close and we're being promised more details on S42 in December. As someone who follows it pretty closely I'd say S42 late next year is pretty possible, as well as an early beta release of Star Citizen itself.

I bought a new computer for this game. By the time it comes out I'll have to buy another one for it.

I know what the differences between them are now, but I thought the term used by Eurogamer felt a bit dimishing for the part of the game, that I have the impression was the main reason for the surge of initial backers to the project.

Yep, I'm sure they are already assembling and ready to hit this thread hard.

I noticed there's been an overall souring of attitudes towards SC as of late.

A combo of dev time stretching even the most generous of estimates, poor stage showings, and kickstarter projects in general bringing disappointment more often than not.

How much of Star Citizen is playable?

Isn’t it just like a space sim? Or are people spending thousands to sit in a hangar and look at a spaceship?

Oh yeah, definitely. I liked playing that game too.

Thing is though, it was supposed to be a precursor to the actual game they wanted to make, which was this huge Amalur MMORPG. But even though Amalur sold a million copies or so, the game still ended up bankrupting the studio.
