New isn't necessarily bad

Something easy to forget because of our lingering hunter gatherer survival instincts

Doubt there will be many. It was a young cadet caught up in the moment of what they were doing, not picard standing on the bridge telling Q to fuck off.

It would be even weirder to establish that precedent and then never really use it again.

I say let the fucks fly from here on out. Swearing isn't swearing anymore, anyway.

It would be fun if they invented some new word that is considered the fuck of the future, and people act shocked whenever anybody says it.

Lorca: 'I don't give a fuck about these fhgwgads'
Saru: 'Sir, I don't appreciate that fucking language.'

So yes, either you don't understand how television works
I actualy do not and would be quite interested if you could give a small insight how the writing works. Because usually (and also in Discovery), there is something like "written by" and then just 1-2 names per episode, but what I gathered here seems more like a team job. So could you tell us a bit about how it works?

Also I have a few other questions (admittedly, as a very big Star Trek fan who is only lukewarm on this series so far, so I can understand especially well if you do not want to answer some or all of these) more directly related to the thing that always (almost exclusively) makes or brakes a Star Trek show for me, the writing. I have ordered them according to how important they are to me, so if you like to answer some but think it's too much overall, it would be great if you could start on top of the list :).
1. Will we also see episodes that focus on the discussion of ethical problems in a similar way as e.g. "The worth of a man" (TNG), "In the Pale Moonlight" (DS9), but also (of lesser quality but going in the same direction) "Tuvix" (VOY) or "Dear Doctor" (ENT)? I get that the last episode had a tiny amount of that, but the issue was quite clear and there were no two sides to this.
2. Many previous Star Trek series, especially TNG put a huge focus on discussion as means of problem solving, where so far in Discovery (also due to the war setting and the rough captain, so it's not as problematic as in the new movies) shooting and killing were primarily chosen instead. Is this a general change of tone or can we expect the more thoughtful / discussion oriented "slower" Star Trek style to return?
3. Can we expect the enemies of the federation (here Klingons) to be portrayed in a more nuanced way further on? I get that it is difficult to give proper motives and to avoid black / white schemes, but Star Trek has often been very successful with this, in particular in Deep Space Nine, but also in parts Enterprise has invested (late!) into this. So far, I have only observed one a bit more nuanced view on the Klingons, in the first episode, where the danger of being swallowed up by the federation and having the own culture destroyed is brought up. Other than that it has been very grey / black (instead of white / black, because the federation itself acts quite questionable)
4. I have observed a change in the use of language when compared to previous Trek, with a much less formal language being used. Also outside of the one instance of "fuck", it seems more like contemporary "street speech" than the very clear and formal language in Star Trek TNG-ENT. Is this change deliberate and if yes, what is the reason for this?
5. Do you already have ideas for further seasons of the series? I have read that the Klingon war is only "good for one season". If yes (and I hope it's a yes! I do not want to go back into a world without new Trek on the horizon), will the series continue in the serialised way it has been so far, or would you prefer more stand alone episodes? Also: Would you like to continue the darker approach or is this just because of the war topic of the first season?

this is not how a writing room works. There's no "at the time".

We are both the genesis and final say on any idea. That's our job. We come up with the idea and then see it through its execution in production. And not once was the idea ever related to some video game I have never heard of. Nor would anyone else given how few gamers were on staff on how obscure this project is and who initially pitched the switch to a monster who drives the spore drive (a non gamer)

We were not just the last ones touching the project. We were the first, second, third, and fourth. I literally went back to check today on the room notes about the day we decided to then Ephraim into a monster to see if there was something I forgot. Nope.

So yes, either you don't understand how television works and you don't get how this idea comes up, or you don't believe me. That's fine. But again, this was never something that was discussed and given the cocktail of the room's membership, it wouldn't have been something anyone else would've heard of before.

Please.

It doesn't exactly vindicate the writing room. You don't have to be a fan. It's a cop out. Researching material and being a fan are mutually exclusive.

Fan of what? Tardigrade the animal? The association of Tardigrades with space isn't that unique, this video has over 13 million views and predates both the game and Trek: First Animal to Survive in Space
We know they planned for it to be part of the crew but that didn't work out, and with the spore drive being a central plot line it's not exactly shocking they connected it with that.

The Tardigrade isn't even a central character of Disco, the way they travel is different in the game and Disco, and like I don't even know if we'll see the Tardigrade again in Trek.

What more do you want?

To discredit discovery as much as possible, it's annoying.

People really ginning up reasons why dropping the F bomb sullys trek and makes it not for families anymore.

This is a franchise where Abraham Lincoln showed up once and called the first black crew member he sees the N word.

A franchise that has quite a lot of sex through the years

A franchise that has had who knows how many depictions of genocide and war.

Hearing the F word and explaining it to your kid seems pretty trivial in 2017 when you have countless other shit to explain to them.

Is this happening a lot? I wouldn't have called Star Trek a family series either way, actually. A lot of the themes will not be understood by young children.

Grizzlyjin

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Well, there isn't any other point that Star Trek could've had swearing. Every other series has been either network TV or first run syndication. TV has evolved quite a bit since Enterprise, much less DS9 or TNG.

I'm sure the same conversation was had with the first interracial kiss on television on TOS.

Serialized Television Has Become a Disease

More hyperbole, of course

Reminds me of those people that complain about bands that try new things, why would you want more of the same always. As someone that plays music I would find it sooo boring and dull to stick to the same style year after year.

DS9 was good because it added those serialized parts, Voyager partially sucked because they kept resetting everything after each episode. Enterprise finally got good after they did an entire seasons serialized lost in that void.

Yeah sometimes trying new stuff doesn't work but at least give it a chance before you start shooting it down smh.

I think for me I am mostly happy that Star Trek Discovery is doing something relatively new and fresh with the Star Trek brand. They could have just as easily made a new TNG or DS9 but I think they simply wanted to do something a bit different.

Star Trek Discovery is far from perfect but I think if this show is afforded some time to develop over the course of a few seasons, it has the potential to become something really special.

Star Trek fans are rooted throughout different generations and so it's understandable that they all want something different. It would be impossible to please all Star Trek fans. I think Discovery plays a lot of homage to the original Roddenberry vision while also trying to do it's own thing and I for one welcome some of the risks they are taking.

I don't agree with every decision that the show has made but I am still enjoying it, paying for CBS All-Access and just watching the full story that they created slowly reveal itself.

Good lord she is terrible. She and Rob Bricken are poster children for the "sky is falling if a new series isn't perfect within two episodes" mentality.

TNG and DS9 both took 3 seasons to start hitting their stride; imagine if the modern whiny, hand-wringing, hot take blogosphere had been around then. TNG would have probably never lasted beyond season 2 and we possibly wouldn't have any modern Trek at all.

Don't know what is going to happen to the forum given what is going on now but its been fun talking about the new show with everyone. If it's still up I'll try to be here. If not I do post in the official discovery hashtag while watching the show and just in general at times. Avatar is the same.

Yep it's been fun. Great show so far. Any suggestions for active places for discussing the show?

Sent you a PM if you can reach it. If not then searching star trek messageboard should get you a good result. That's one of the places I check out.

Is everyone going to new website, or are there other forums or discord that you are migrating to.

Feeling quite lost right now and could use some guidance

Most close communities had Discord servers set up where they hang out now. The collective plan seems to be to migrate to Reset.Era once it's up. If you have been part of one of those communities (this doesn't seem to have a Discord) you can send a signal there. You won't get lucky if you had no to little involvement since everybody is wary of 4chan infiltration rn. If you're not part of an established community just keep your ears open about Reset.Era. You could also try the waypoint (vice) forum in the meantime if you're really lost.

I'm gonna be making the Star Trek thread in the forum that we can't name here when it goes up (unless someone else wants to). Hope to see some familiar faces.

Thank you very much for the help! :)

Doesn't seem like many of the community's I follow have discords so I'll check out the new site when it's live and hope they move over too.

See you on the other side ;)

That's true. People forget how awful TNG series 1 and 2 were, and how lucky Trek fans are that we managed to get past it.

That said, we still ended up with Voyager.

For our Sins, although in fairness 50% of Voyager wasn't trash and quite good

If everyone is leaving I suppose this will be my last post in the TrekGaf threads;
This Week's Disco was brilliant, it managed to keep the urgency the series had whilst also doing the typical episode of the week idea.
The cast keep getting better and better
I can't believe Lorca chose to give up his lover/the admiral to the Klingons, just goes to show he is far from a typical Starfleet Captain, it feels very much like he fits more with Section 31's ruthlessness
onwards and upwards because this feels like the best first season of Star Trek in a long time

What is the picture quality like for those of you watching on CBS All Access? I'm watching it on Netflix (UK) and the scenes onboard the Discovery seem too dark with artificial film grain and sharpness added. Other scenes like the exterior of Vulcan on the last episode look pretty good though.

The film grain is weird, it's fecking coloured specs everywhere and not like normal film grain. It's horrible for the picture quality and I have no idea why it's added

I know some film makers like to add film grain to stuff filmed digitally because it looks too "clean", but they have gone way too far in Discovery, it looks really rough and unpleasant to me. Almost as bad as watching an old DVD on a large Full HD or 4K TV.

I've not noticed it TBH. I do remember the first episode had a weird colour issue for the first 20 minutes or so on Netflix UK.
