I can no longer enjoy playing 30 fps games

30fps implementation in forza horizon 3 is very good. Forza horizon 3 runs at 4K 60fps on my PC, yet I can play xbox X version without problems, it's hard to belive I'm playing 30fps game, and I have no issues with that. To be honest I even prefer xbox X version, becase graphics looks way better thanks to HDR support.

But for me the biggest problem in games is not 30fps, it's input lag. 30fps games has higher input lag compared to 60fps games, but many years ago I was playing on CRT's (zero input lag) and wired gamepads, so even 30fps experience was amazing. Yet 30fps games today on HDTV's are different story. Wireless gamepads + 20-60ms input lag in HDTV, multicore engines (multicore games has much higher input lag compared to single core games), and you end with lag fest. At this point I cant no longer enjoy 30fps games, but it's not 30fps issue, it's lag issue.

For example half life 2, that game has both single core and multicore support. With multicore mode I have to run this game at 144fps in order to get responisve gameplay, and 60fps feels laggy. But when I will run the same game in single core mode (and set single core affinity in the task manager on top of that), then even 60fps feels perfect.

Some xbox X games has 60fps support, but of course jaguar is to weak for 60fps in every game, but they can implement framerate upscaling. This intriguing concept offers all the advantages of rendering a console game at 30FPS, along with the visual smoothness and crisper response of 60FPS gaming.

Here's article in regards to fps upscaling in games
http://and.intercon.ru/releases/talks/rtfrucvg/

and here's sample video
http://and.intercon.ru/videos/rtfrucvg_part2_live_x360_h264.avi
besides few motion artifacts it looks like true 60fps game and I would like to see this feature implementend in xbox X and PS4P games.

Is the game fun? --> If yes, then I do not care at all whether it is 30 or 60 fps.

If no? Then I don't play the game.

I think the FPS circlejerk is really stupid.

There are so many factors that play into what is an acceptable frame rate for any given game, e.g. genre, input responsiveness, etc. 60fps is great. But is isn't necessary for all games. Heck, I played and enjoyed Bayonetta on PS3. If the game is interesting/fun then frame rate becomes less important.

I'd have to say it really depends for me personally. I would obviously always prefer 60+ FPS but if the game is still good then the framerate sits backseat to the overall experience.

Does anyone else feel the same way about this?
There are a few genres where I simply can't stand any framerate below 60 FPS, most notably racing sims/games or fast-paced action games. Same way I was happy with my ancient Nokia brick of a phone, but since I have a smartphone find it a bit difficult to care for the old piece of plastic with physical buttons. If I play a point & click adventure game or turn based strategy I don't think it really matters, but even there I do appreciate the more responsive interface I get at higher framerates.

What are the chances we see more 60fps games next generation? If Nintendo can do it on Switch I see no reason why the next Xbox and PS5 can't be more of a priority.

Well I just made a thread some days ago about how even after playing almost nothing but 60fps games for months I've had no problem returning to 30fps.

It doesn't feel as smooth but after no more than 20 minutes I just get used to it and it's not a problem. I actually just recently played through Hellblade on PS4 Pro and mid game decided to switch to 30fps since the game doesn't need fast inputs and it looks really blurry in 60fps mode. The difference in smoothness was obvious when I switched but , again, no more than 20 mins later I got used to it and had no problem enjoying the rest of the game at 30fps

I have a 144Hz G-Sync monitor on my PC, and regularly play games that maintain 120+ fps. I can still enjoy 30 fps games on my consoles. I prefer 60 fps of course, but 30 fps isn't a big deal in most genres.

Ahhh one of those people who feels if others dont agree with him its a circlejerk and really stupid. I think the close minded people who dont think others might possibly feel differently about things are funny.

Sucks to be you, I guess.

I always feel sorry for people not being able to tolerate a certain number of FPS, resolution or screensize. You're missing out on so many great games :(

Part of being a great game is delivering great performance. If a game has stellar gameplay but chugs at 15 FPS that game is not a stellar game

I have troubles enjoying 30 fps titles too, but it also highly depends on the genre of the game for me.
I've been able to enjoy Breath of the wild even at 30 fps with some drops, however a racing game at 30 fps (like driveclub for example) is a no go for me.
I really prefer 60 over 30, 60 feels natural while 30 can feel "wrong", but what type of game you play is what matters the most.
I loved SSX3, and I couldn't play on tour because of the 30 fps. Same for other fast paced games like Platinum Games titles, fighting games etc...

I have a very hard time with 30fps games overall. It is bearable only if the game is very slow paced. Otherwise, it is a real problem for me.

I also have a big problem with LCD blur. Worst shit ever. Especially as I play a lot of old games on a CRT, everytime I go back to LCD my eyes suffer because of the blur.

It only bothers me when I play the game back to back. I remember I was playing The Witness on my Pro and I somehow changed a graphical setting that must've changed the framerate from 60 to 30. All the sudden the game played like a slideshow so I had to change it back. I now stick to PC mostly because I have a 144Hz monitor.

I'm perfectly fine with 30fps and it's advantages. If the game can be 60fps and have all the bells and whistles, like a good dual stick shooter, great. If it's an open world game where they need 30fps to perfect draw distance, textures, explosions, destructibility, and heavy traffic... then give me 30fps.

So I grew up playing NES and all of the systems that came after it and having built a gaming PC the other day it dawned on me what was bothering me on many of the PS4 and Xbox one games I had been playing....

60fps, I installed Forza Horizon 3 on my pc and was playing it at 4k at 60 fps and it honestly did not feel at all the same as my Xbox One X version I have. Not only did the game fee much more responsive due to the higher framerate but it looked so smooth in comparison to the 30fps version.

All of the games I grew up playing and loved as a kid were 60fps. I came to the conclusion after trying so many games out in 60fps on the pc (batman arkham knight, crysis 2 and 3, Forza Horizon 3, need for speed most wanted and hot pursuit etc.) I can no longer enjoy 30fps games. I literally had two 43 inch monitors in 4k next to each other and watched the 30fps version of the game on one and 60fps on the other and the difference is striking not to mention how the games feel.

Digital Foundry did a great video about framerate making a hige difference in the Retro video of Daytona USA. John does such a great job on these videos!!

Does anyone else feel the same way about this?

I defintely think 60fps looks and feels much better, but 30fps is still ok as long as it is consistent and steady with no frame pacing issues.

It's all about context for me. Lots of games work just fine @30fps, for example JRPG's. I am currently playing Ni No Kuni and it's a solid 30fps with correct framepacing. Don't have any troubles with it at all.
I played Deus Ex Mankind divided @30fps.. and it sucked, felt slow and not unresponsive.

Deus Ex on PS4/XboxOne was a bit ropey, felt really sluggish when I played my friends PS4 copy (to be fair it did have dips below 30 )
The load times where the worst though, any game where your using stealth and constantly saving just in case you fuck up is pc only for me now, Human Revolution was too painful on 360.

I dont care either way.
Ive got a kick ass PC with a huge monitor, and most of the time it just sits there gathering dust.
My most played game is warframe and i play it almost exclusively on ps4.

60 fps is usually optimal. I don't mind 30 fps in slower paced games. But anything with speed and precision needs to be 60 fps.

So you've been playing 30fps all these years but only "now" after doing several tests for 60 fps can you no longer enjoy playing 30 fps games.

This is what gets me, all of a sudden it's unbearable. What were you guys playing before??

I personally have never cared about any fps as long as the game was good. The only time it would ever matter is if the game became impossible to play.

I'm sure it makes a difference with something like vr, but other than that I can't be bothered.

If you're such an undiscerning person why would you spend all the money it requires to get a "kick ass PC" just to let it gather dust?

Exactly what I was wondering.

I love my Pro, and play it a lot, but my mid-range PC kicks the shit out of it and is easily my most used platform, as it should be

This generation should have focused on fps over resolution, but gotta go with the marketing ploy and resolution won out. Playing 30fps feels like such a huge step back, even on games where people claim you don't need 60. Unless its a card or board game, give me 60fps

Generally I'm fine with either, in some cases one or the other somehow feels slightly better (30 fps somehow feels sluggier and that somehow enhances some games to me when switching over), but generally you get used to it pretty quickly.

I've always been in the position that 100% locked and stable 30 fps is perfectly fine and perfectly smooth, no problems, and that would include shooters.

That said- 30 with drops is noticeable and way worse than say 60ps with drops into the 40-50 range when in stress.

I don't know if I'd ever call 30 FPS "smooth." Playable? Certainly. Smooth? Hardly. On PC, it's pretty easy to cap the framerate at 30 or 60 (many games let you do it in the options) and the difference is profound. 60 FPS feels smooth. 30 FPS, not so much.

Some xbox X games has 60fps support, but of course jaguar is to weak for 60fps in every game, but they can implement framerate upscaling. This intriguing concept offers all the advantages of rendering a console game at 30FPS, along with the visual smoothness and crisper response of 60FPS gaming.

Isn't that just framerate interpolation? I'm pretty sure a bunch of TVs already have that feature built in. The problem with interpolation is that it reduces image quality (because the hardware has to procedurally generate the interpolated frames) and doesn't actually increase the update rate of the code, so you aren't gaining the increased responsiveness provided by true 60 FPS. Motion blur can help mask the image quality issues but if you don't like motion blur (and many people don't), that's not a good solution.

Like I said, sucks to be you. I would hate to feel the same way.

To me, this is like people who can't enjoy a movie because a certain actor is in them or a certain company is behind it. I'm not invalidating their reasons, but I'd hate myself if I thought like that.

*edit* 15 is pretty much unplayable to me as well these days, which is why I cant go back to my awesome N64 library :( 30 is absolutely fine however, even if it has dips like BotW has. I mean, i notice those but they don't bother me.

As long as it doesn't affect gameplay, it doesn't matter to me. I think this sort of things gets more attention than it deserves, but games and their performance have almost always been a hot button topic for the hobby.

i prefer to play at 60fps, but 30 doesn't bother me that much

I've got a 1080ti so im a bit spoiled there, most of my buddies are on ps4 so that gets far more usage

I would really like to try and get a PC so I can try out games like Fallout 4 and Evil Within in 60 fps. The problem is I thought you could get 60 fps in Fallout 4 on less than a 1000$ budget today. That doesn't seem to be the case since most of these graphics cards tests only care about how much FPS this and that game perform on Ultra High and on a cad costing the same as a PS4 you only get 30 FPS:ish. I'm only interested in what settings a certain graphics card can achieve in 60 FPS, why dosn't the tests stress on that?
Therefore I try to forget about 60 FPS heaven and live on with PS4 Pro. At least we got some games in 60 FPS such as Let It Die, and Dark Souls 2 and the upcoming remaster of Dark Souls.

It kills me when people go on and on about 60fps, but then gladly play with screen tearing. Screen tearing is absolutely jarring to me.

I mostly stopped buying 30fps games several years back. (I sometimes buy something that runs badly by mistake, and each year I might make one or two deeply-discounted exceptions.) I know some folks freak out when I mention this, but honestly there are so many great games available out there it's not like I'm ever starving for excellent content by sticking with 60+.

While people aren't wrong when they say a lot of it comes down to frame pacing, ultimately 30fps is an extremely low framerate that inherently leads to high input lag. If you can handle that, fine, but I grew up with ~60fps games (Atari, NES, Genesis, SNES), I spend most of my time with 60+FPS games today, and the difference to me is immediately, blatantly obvious. It's also common for me to get headaches in games with low FPS. 30fps is just an inherently unpleasant experience, and it's a rare game design that justifies that sort of poor performance. (Last example I can think of is probably Red Faction Guerrilla, where the destruction was both integral and clearly performance-heavy.)

I partially blame the N64. I spent a couple years with that being my primary gaming system, and all those low framerates undoubtedly helped me develop my current sensitivity. But mostly it's probably down to experience -- as mentioned, like many gamers I grew up with 60fps. It's what I'm used to, and with all the great-looking 60fps games we get every generation I don't really see a need to compromise my standards merely because some publishers want prettier assets for PR screenshots they are going to fake anyway.

This reminds me of when I got my Oculus Rift and afterwards having a hard time finding interest in playing 2D games. And now I have a Switch and I have a hard time wanting to do anything but play games there.

This thread and opinions like this reminds me of bloggers and girls "only being able to drink Fiji water".

Well when I play for example Fortnite on my PC and I am getting a solid 140 fps then go back to console to play with friends and cant near enjoy the game because of how jerky it is to me thats not opinion thats 100% enjoying over double the frame rate and makes it hard to go back to games especially 30 fps games.
