Professor fails student; "Australia is not a country"

An Idaho woman failed a college assignment because her professor didn't believe Australia was a country.
Ashley Arnold, 27 was taking the course as distance learning for her Sociology degree from Southern New Hampshire University, Buzzfeed reports.
She was supposed to compare a social norm in another country with the United States and she chose social media use in Australia.
However the professor failed her outright for the project, saying Ms Arnold did not correctly pick a country to compare the US to and instead chose a continent.
Australia is in fact the only place in the world to be both a country and a continent.
Ms Arnold told Buzzfeed she was shocked the professor had not checked whether she was wrong about Australia's status.

"If she's hesitating or questioning that, why wouldn't she just google that herself? " she said.
However when she queried her grade, and provided a library resource confirming Australia is a country, the professor doubled down on her belief it is only a continent.
"Research is like dominoes, if you accidentally knock over one piece the entire set will also fall," the professor said.
"Australia is a continent; it is not a country. That error made it nearly impossible for you to accurately complete your week 2 research outline correctly."
Ms Arnold then sent the professor a link to the Australian Government's "About Australia" page and the professor said she would do some "independent research" into whether Australia is a country or not.
Once that research was completed Ms Arnold quickly received an amended grade of B+ for the project, although the professor did not apologise for the error.
The university was however happy to apologise and refunded Ms Arnold the $1000 she spent on the course, a spokesperson saying they're well aware of the fact Australia is both a country and a continent.

Holy fucking hell.

What was that about sociology degrees?

Everyone knows that Australia is a country in the middle of Europe, next to Switzerland, with locals in strange looking lederhosen and regularly in the Eurovision Song contest.

Well it’s ridiculous to not know Australia is a country but the professor did everything else right it seems like. It wasn’t necessary to try and embarrass the professor by contacting the news.

It's bad enough for anyone to not know Australia is a country, but how in the hell could a SOCIOLOGY (the study of society) professor not know this?

Speaking of Continents, what continent is New Zealand part of?

I was never taught Australia was a continent. My teachers used to refer the that region as Australasia, which included NZ and some pacific islands I think. Then I heard the term Oceania used by others.

I blame the student; Everyone knows the first thing you do in those courses is to figure out what the professor thinks and then write that. That's the first rule of college.

I've probably said shit like "To the ethnomusicologist's appreciative and fine-tuned ear, Rusted Root is more significant than The Beatles".

There are only like 10 countries worth talking about anyway when you think about it so I'm on the professor's side.

Any adult in the world that is not mentally challenged or been brought up in unusual conditions should know that Australia is a country. ESPECIALLY a fucking college professor. The levels of dumb and ignorance here are mind boggling.

I thought Australia was an alternative penal colony, where brits would send disgusting people who use yeast extract for spread. And people with death wishes. Oh well, the more you know.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
I would hope she's out of a job. She demonstrated she's too stupid to be a college professor, of sociology no less, and her credibility as one should be in the toilet. I wouldn't want to take a class with this woman.

Ha! This made my city’s newspaper here in Australia. Dumb travels fast.

Apparently the instructor has been “replaced”. Good.

God I wish I could get a refund for my University course. Titled, "Games Design Enterprise" I was really enticed by what it had to offer. What it should really have been called is "How to write a word document."

You know, this is going to sound really dumb...but I don't think I ever thought of Australia as a continent. Jesus I feel stupid.

Mod: removed offending quote and reciprocation

Back on topic, not really sure why the teacher couldn't just google this as some others have pointed before giving her a bad grade.

I thought the professor was going to say it's a prison colony. Please don't ban me (I stole the joke from Funhaus).

Anyway, that's just... ouch.

The prof absolutely deserved to be fired. If you've never learned Australia is a country, and also double down on denying it when a student you failed challenged you the first time (without checking themselves), they clearly do not have the right temperament for education. And by golly, not amending that grade to an A+ suggests the prof also lacks basic common sense and social skills needed to teach as well.

Lol yea when a student teaches a professor something it should equate to an immediate A+ :p
Knowing Australia is a country too, is elementary school geography though lol
