What do you think about people saying Trump is looking to become a dictator?

I came across this clip and I wonder what people think about what's said at the end?

New Rule: Trump Is Above the Law | Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO)

The way I see it no one in the US is above the law.

However, some people play by a different set of rules.

Even so, at the end of the day, no one can successfully resist the state bringing down the hammer down if enough people with power agree. Not even the POTUS. He'd be toast. So, to me, when I look at Maher's fear that Pres. Trump would become a dictator and ignore the SC or tell Mueller to go fish...I don't see how he manages that. It sounds more like the Democrats and #NeverTrump conservatives are mad that they can't unilaterally remove Trump from office after finding him guilty before anything has been proven.

We've seen the courts rule against Trump plenty of times and he didn't go so what I'm above the law. He accepted it.

I would say to them, "You sir are a moron."
These people will say or do ANYTHING to get Trump out. Each day that passes where he is still President they get more rabid and grasp for more straws. Just my two cents. Most of these people didn't think Trump would last 6 months as President. So yeah. Let them live in delusion. Its ok by me.

He's too fucking stupid and short sighted to ever become a dictator. The saving grace really.

People are crazy. Just because he wants to get rid of term limits for himself doesn't make him a dictator. I support Trump being able to be President until he dies, then we can elect Trump junior and have a dynasty like the Bush family. The only way to prevent deep state agents like Hillary from ruining our country is to keep someone as honest and uncorrupt as Trump in there to keep draining the swamp.

The difference between the Shillary's of the world and Trump is that Trump cares about the american people even more than he cares about himself. I mean he isn't even taking his presidential salary, and he looks out for all of us. I don't know about you guys but I make an extra 600 bucks a year now thanks to the tax reform. That's more than Obama ever did for me in 8 years. Doesn't sound like a dictator to me. This is why we need to shut down all of the MSM and just let the white house report the news, too much fake news bullshit trying to make people scared of Trump.

If the left thinks Trump wants to be dictator, why are they trying to take away the second ammendment?

I think Trump just likes control and power and is willing to do whatever he can WITHIN the system to use as much of it as he has available to him...and that’s basically it.

We’ve got a pretty solid system of checks and balances in place. But if there’s a grey area or loophole, you can bet your ass he’d use it.

I don’t think that makes anyone inherently evil by default, but with Trump it just comes down to people not necessarily feeling comfortable with the man doing it...his intentions...or motives.

If the sitting president was using shady tactics to get shit done that I agreed with, I wouldn’t blink or care, I’d cheer them on.

This. You'd think the left would be smart enough to know that we need all the guns we can get to keep the government from being corrupt. If we all turned our guns over the US government would EASILY be able to make sure that only wealthy people's lives matter, and then someone like Hillary with a bunch of shady ties to foreign governments would get elected and do shitty communist stuff like public health care.

It's all apart of the 24-hour LARP a lot of those people have been in since Trump was elected - they dress up as preppie revolutionaries and turn over trash cans to stick it to Drumpf.

This enables them to continue sanctimoniously #Resisting by pretending that they are fighting back against the next Saddam, with the ironic help of the IC.

Right? Lol. I mean, why the heck would anyone protest, it's not like it ever accomplishes anything. They just yell "trump is doing bad stuff!" And pretend they're toppling corruption. He's our president for gosh sake, whether you like him or not, everything he says goes. People need to show respect and just let Trump do his thing.

It's because this country has become too godless imo. I hope his next move is to enforce mandatory Christianity in schools. Don't believe in the one true God? Fine, you lose access to public schools. I guarantee you school shootings would drop dramatically, God fearing people don't commit violent acts like these school shooting heathens.

Props. If everyone thought the way we did, the world would be a better place. None of this PC culture, resisting the government nonsense. Trump is here to stand up for the American people, the sooner people realize that and just let him enact his agenda, the sooner we can be a great country again like we were in the 1950's.

If you think I'm a Christian conservative or something, you are gravely mistaken lmao

I think the worst thing he has done, by far, is antagonizing Iran. Otherwise he has been a fairly typical conservative president, with (ironically) less warmongering and very little social conservative bullshit outside of the military trans-ban.

Otherwise, the media is mostly pissy that he won't suck up to them, and the IC is pissy because their efforts have been curtailed.

I don't see how "antagonizing Iran" is a bad thing. They gave us a shitty deal, and Trump is smart enough not to blindly trust them. They need to just take what they can get imo. Trump is single handedly reuniting north and south Korea, obviously peace is his goal. But if countries want to mess with the dog, they're gonna get bit. So many of these countries bend to the whim of whoever has the most money and influence, that's why Trump is such a breath of fresh air. He's already a billionaire, so he's not motivated by money like Obama and the deep state. He has America's best interest as his MAIN priority, and is a Christian. He makes tough decisions even when he knows the left could use it as ammo against us.

I dunno why everyone keeps accusing me of this. I'm a centrist, but I believe it some right things and some left things. People aren't just black and white.

Everything I say is true. Take Russia for instance. There is a huge leftist conspiracy that Trump worked with Russia to rig the election. Even with that, he's still saying we need to be friends with Russia, and hesitant to enforce sanctions. If he WAS working with Russia, do you really think he'd be THAT stupid to make it so obvious? No, he's just doing what's best for America and ignoring the MSM leftist fake news agenda. Almost to a fault. Say what you will about him, but the man has integrity.

Great question. What America truly is? America could be a loosely knit wad of people trying to make a little more money for themselves and their families that just want to buy some nice shit and visit Hawaii once every ten years. It's distinctly possible that people are wrapped up in relationships, office politics, pets, kids, and bills. Some of us are looking for nice ladies to juggle our wieners for an afternoon before going back to work. If we're really lucky, we order the Osso Buco and have a glass of wine on Saturday night.

The narcissism of this post suggests that Americans have so little going on that we're wringing our hands and muttering to ourselves how much we hate trans and black people or whatever victimized group you're associating yourself with today. We've finally found our messiah; the one that embraces our Palpatine-like hatred and force lightnings everybody that's not the shade of white we like.

You could listen to reason when people point out your paranoia and get healthy. This route leads to Carvel or Baskin Robbins and embraces adversity and makes things better leading by example. Likewise, you could group up with like minded, paranoid, perpetual victims that moan to a steady drumbeat and you get... well, you know where to find them. They're the ones hiding in their houses because Donald Trump is out there twirling a bicycle chain with a Marlboro Red draped from his lip.

I'm not convinced he's intelligent enough (or if you are a Trump fan that finds that insulting, I think it's equally plausible he simply does not want the responsibility) to be a dictator. That being said, he is exposing a lot of fundamental problems that have been brewing for a while. Primarily, the Legislative branch has slowly abdicated a lot of their authority (foreign relations, war powers, etc.) to the Executive as they live in a constant state of terror about the ramifications of voting on serious legislation that deals with these issues as they are often lose/lose votes. The separation of the justice department from the executive should also be more enforced than it currently is, instead of simply being considered a norm.

edit: I'd also be remiss for not pointing out that the idea this is exclusively a liberal fantasy runs into the unfortunate problem that there were also impeachment movements and claims of dictatorship for Obama. It's baked into our politics now that there is a non-democratic solution to government you don't like; this is something that both the left and right have built together over the past administrations.

I don't think Trump actually wants to be president given the reports of him and his wife on election night.

That said, I think we is weakening the framework of checks and balances on his power, and undermining the the public service.

I would say that anyone that thinks so is severely retarted.

You think about a dictator as someone that has absolute control to do whatever he/she wants and the rest of the country just have to follow along.
Like kings in the old days.

If trump is a dictator then he is an exceptionally incapable dictator.
There are a lot of things Trump wants to do but he will never gets to implent.

He wants to build a wall. Doesn't look like that will happen.
He wants Hillary in jail. That doesn't look like it is on the table either.
He wants travel bans for a bunch of mostly middle eastern countries. Nope, not happening.
He wants to repeal the ACA. Well, that does not happen either.
He wants to deport all illegals. etc etc.

If that is being a dictator then he sucks at being a dictator too.

He’s already done enough damage to the office already. He’s made constant lying normal. He still has depressingly strong support even after continuing to act like a complete imbecile after being elected.

There is absolutely nothing he can do to make his base turn against him. No matter how disgusting of a human being he is, his supporters follow him blindly. James Comey Is right when he says that the only way back from this is for him to be defeated in a landslide.

Why does he need to be smart when he has people to do that for him?

It's hard to deny the guy enjoys power and control, but the US executive branch has far too little power to turn the president into some sort of emperor or dictator. That said the possibility of it isnt impossible, just really unlikely. It's far more likely that the US could end up closer to a true oligarchy, though there is an argument to be made that it is one at this very moment.

Bill Clinton will start a war because he's attempting to move his presidency into a dictatorship.
-A colleague of mine in 2000 who was an Alex Jones/Infowars superfan.

This was the first time I heard someone who was opposed to the current president claim that they are just trying to take over and destroy America, but its something I've heard in one way or another for every president since. People really love to demonize the thing they dont like without any shred of self reflection when the shoe is on the other foot. I am no fan of president Trump, but this is not even a tiny concern of mine.

As much as I do dislike Trump, videos like this never get old:

If you have actual principles, when you find out the guy you hate didn't say thing thing you disagree with, you don't turn around and agree with it. Although you could have absolutely done the same thing with republican voters and Bush quotes attributed to Obama. It never stops being funny, though.

I don't agree with everything Bill Maher says, but when I watched that clip on Friday night I got fucking chills because I knew he was right.

My roommate and I actually had this conversation not long ago: What happens when Trump gets voted out and/or hits his term limit and then just... refuses to leave? Who removes him from office? How? By force?

The Tea Party did do a lot of shit similar to this as well. They tried to image themselves as working for lower taxes and responsible government (a bunch ran not taking PAC money), but once their candidates got in it became the same old tired social conservative bullshit about gays and abortion.

They imagined themselves as the literal Boston Tea Party, but in the end they were just doing the Obama-era version of "Trump Small Hands Joke #33414875923".

Maher’s point is that nothing can happen to trump because republicans won’t be a part of anything that could seriously harm him. Not that he wants to be a dictator. The unique part of trump is doesn’t give a shit about appearances beyond his core base, so he says whatever he wants than has a rally in Michigan where he can hear validation of everything he does. And republicans in congress won’t turn against him in any significant way, nor will the supreme court

That said trump absolutely would want to be a dictator. All the “checks” such as term limits, filibusters, senate majorities, etc he has spoken against in his case. What else would he need to do to qualify the statement hat he’d like to be a dictator?

If Congress had the votes to remove Pres. Trump from office or if Mueller's subpoena was deemed valid, then law enforcement would make him comply. Just like me, you, or anyone else. Obviously, people have tried to resist or ignore what the gov't told them to do, but they're unsuccessful. When the state as a collective decides to come after you and has the law on their side, then that's all she wrote. It's lights out.

The way I see it someone is above the law if you're outside the US's jurisdiction or say had a lot of support from one of the branches of US gov't. Then, things get more ambiguous. And that to me is a different situation then what Pres. Trump is in.

Well if the SC or Republicans support Trump's side over Mueller or his enemies, then that doesn't make him above the law because I assume it would be justified. The system just isn't working your favor. You can't fall out onto the floor and throw a tantrum. It's like people who get mad that the courts say the police play by a different set of rules. If you don't like it, then vote people out or work to change the law. But you can't start tearing stuff up or have a meltdown.

Would they, though? Which branch of law enforcement? And how far would the Secret Service go to follow their mission to protect the president? Would they protect him from other LEOs?

This is how civil wars start. It scares me.

I don't think anyone is truly concerned with Trump as a Dictator. What they are concerned with is that he certainly acts like one.

- Attacking the press/Threats of Censorship.
- Attacking Freedom of Speech
- Lying to the public *

There might be more, but those are the ones that come to mind.

EDIT: Outside of the Presidency, Trump is corrupt through and through. He is above the law, because if he wasn't he'd been arrested 6 times over by now for fraud, money laundering, racketeering, sexual assault, work place discrimination, breach of contract, hiring illegals. The list goes on and on...
