God of War had the best debut month ever for a PlayStation exclusive

God of War has had a better debut than any other PlayStation exclusive ever, according to The NPD Group. Not only was it the best-selling game in the U.S. in April, but it’s performance in its first month also outpaces all other PlayStation exclusives. That’s not just PlayStation 4 — it’s for any PlayStation since the platform’s debut in 1995

God of War came out on April 20, so it was only available for 10 days in the month. But it was still able to break the record, beating Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which came out for the PlayStation 2 in October 2004.

I upgraded to pro at the same time and had to visit 3 stores before I tracked one down. Sales this good for an exclusive game also translate to a sizable hardware bump I'm sure.

But did it sell faster than other Rare games in its first week?

I have a hard time believing that it outsold the first of Grand Theft Auto Vice City and/or San Andreas. Yes, I know they were eventually ported to other systems, but they did begin life as PS2 exclusives.

Unless they are referring explicitly to Sony first party games.

They call San Andreas out specifically but beating Gran Turismo is even more surprising. IMO

Sony has released some fantastic exclusives but God of War is at another level. Let’s hope they can keep raising the bar.

I bought the GoW Pro Bundle. Its usually one of the better deals you can get if you can get both the console and a new AAA game in one go.

I can see this giving hardware sales a huge bump.

So I'm guessing you calling "overrated" because YOU didn't like the games as much as others and you don't like the game that YOU didn't like gets praised.

Lol, it has really high reviews from users and critics alike. You are just coming off bitter with no justification behind your post.

Did you not read the post? It is only a few sentences...

Overrated in your opinion. It's my favourite game of the generatiom, loved every second of it. The game is damn near perfect Imo.

You consider the lack of QTEs to be a bad thing. I don't think anyone should put any stock into your opinion of what's overrated.

I guess PS4, right now, is beating PS2 in terms of active user base, so God of War has the biggest audience to sell to. Even though PS2 sold more, the PS4 probably has more active users.

This.

The game is superb and deserves every bit of praise. Doesn’t mean everyone will love it, but not everyone will love everything.

But in the end that didn't stop Activision from removing Single player on their COD game.

Still, the way Sony uses their first party games to augment and diversify the console lineup works wonders and gives people like me (and from the sounds of things others in this thread too :)) tons of kick-ass enjoyable content (including Single Player big events).

The problem is that this is not what the suits take away from a successful release like this. They don't see a successful single player title making it's money back, they see revenue being lost because there is no multiplayer, no season pass, no microtransactions etc. They don't see the money earned, they see the money NOT earned. They don't see that not every game can work with the same business model. The exceptions to this work at Sony and Bethesda right now.

I never thought God of War was that popular among PlayStation users (I'm not a fan of the series myself). I can't believe it beat Gran Turismo though. How did it beat The Real Driving Simulator?

don't get me wrong, i did like Gow 4 and i did like TLOU, but they are too damn overrated, they get praised for the simplest things, i just don't get why people liked TLOU's story even though it is a generic Hollywood zombie movie story but with good acting and yet you see it gets mentioned as one of the best stories in gaming

God of war 4 has an amazing combat system and that i cannot deny, but the lack of bosses, lack of large monsters, the long and boring travelling and the repetitive enemy encounters with no variety in their design which reminds me of Nioh, makes it not worth the scores it got, for a game that got 94MC in this generation it should be a true masterpiece like BOTW or Witcher 3

take Hellblade for an example, it is probably one of the worst games i have ever played, boring as fuck, repetitive as fuck, frustrating as fuck, and yet it gets praised

Horizon is almost overrated, it got 89MC which is a little too high for a Far Cry clone and yet people call it one of the best open world games along side Witcher 3 and BOTW, in my opnion Horizon should have a 84MC, it's a good game, but not that good

lets talk about Nier since it's on your profile, it scored 88MC and people call it's world beautiful and they enjoy the quests, What the actual fuck ?? the world is as empty as MGS V and as ugly as a ps2 game and the quests are as horrible as FFXV's, how the fuck did this game gets praised ?

however not all sony exclusives become overrated, only the hyped ones, look at Yakuza series, it gets 80-85MC, even though Yakuza 0 story is better than everything ND and Santa monica did in their whole career combined and yet you don't see it gets praised, and that's an underrated game, Yakuza series deserved more but sony fans only care about generic bullshit

the next overrated game will be Spiderman, sure it won't score as high as GOW 4, but it will definitely get overrated, i'm guessing 88MC, and when you play the game you will see all the flaws that makes it a 70-80MC game but it will get praised no matter what because it's a sony Exclusive

and next year witness the insane scores for TLOU 2, i won't be surprised if it got 98MC even though it won't deserve it, for fucks sake they gave a walking simulator a 93MC, what do you think they'll give the sequel to TLOU ? which is probably the most overrated game of all time

I like to compare the story of TLoU to that of The Wrestler (Aronofsky flick). Watching it, 15 minutes in I was sure there were basically two ways it could end. While I'm glad they didn't go for the happy Hollywood ending (which was great, it would have ruined the movie), at no point did I go "didn't see that coming". Yet I think it is a tremendous movie. Similarly, the story in TLoU in and of itself isn't that spectacular or surprising. What makes it great is the execution - not just the performances (which are exceptional) but direction too. Small things like
the scene fading into music with no audible dialogue, when Joel finds Ellie hacking David away
. Having believable characters with realistic interactions shouldn't be a high bar in video games, but sadly it is.

Also the ending (which is divisive, personally loved it) takes balls. Not many developers would have done that.

Nailed it. I feel like most of the people criticising TLOU aren't into film/ don't know much about character/narrative structure. It's not the story that sells TLOU - it's the way it's told.

I get what youre saying and wholeheartedly support it, but companies are shoving MP modes/games down customers throats because the revenue streams are much larger, not because they think no one wants SP. maybe they blame the consumer and dont say that it’s about the money...but honestly....it’s about the money.

Imagine how much more money sony would make if they made a battle royale god of war game instead of this single player game?

A bit trollish to be frank, but i’ll say that the record wont be tackled as easily as you think. Yes I believe that it had help in other aspects ie. release calendar, etc. but i think youre overrating the ease to tackle such a monumental record. A Perfect storm of multiple elements need to come together to happen like this. Not just the next overhyped exclusive in line. If that was true, we’d be seeing this record fall more often and in line with releases...

well, it had a lot of marketing so of course it will sell well. Let's see if it will pay off for shadow of the tomb raider though.

Your tastes aren’t facts.

The sooner you realize that, the less frustrated you’ll be.

You listed off a bunch of games people love, essentially saying they shouldn’t love them so much.

Ok sure, an occasional rant about a game receiving more praise than it should, makes sense.

However, if you can list a half a dozen games from the past year alone that you have problems with and even *predict* you’ll dispute scores for future games no one’s even played....to me it just seems like you’ve got your own thing going on, where you like to rant against what’s popular. That’s fine, but that doesn’t make it reality.

i'm not talking about taste, i'm talking about people praising things in sony exclusives that doesn't make sense, you see some people say MGS V's world is empty and pointless which is true but then you see them say Nier 2 world is good, that doesn't make any sense, why hated MGS V's world but liked Nier 2's ?? both are empty as fuck

i see people saying Horizon counts as one of the best RPGs but actually you can't change the story in Horizon and the dialogue wheel has no effect, but then you see them saying Fallout 4 is not an RPG even though you can change the story in Fallout 4

all i'm saying is that Sony exclusives get more than they deserve and we have many games as a proof, they're not bad (except for Hellblade because it's garbage) they're just overrated as fuck

i don't "predict", i just see trailers and judge them, i saw God of war's trailers and i liked the change since the last 6 games were identical, but in no way i thought it would be a 94MC, when i saw the scores i knew something is not right, and when i finished the game it turned out i was right, the game is overrated, and like i said before, not all sony exclusives are overrated, Detroit comes out in a couple of days and i'm sure it won't score 90+MC

i don't rant against popular things, i just say my honest opinion and i don't give a shit about what others think, i loved popular games like Witcher 3, Overwatch and BOTW

Uhh. Hellblade isn't an exclusive. Ninja Theory had a marketing/limited console exclusivity -kind of a thing going on with Sony, but it was released on PC the same time as on PS4, and a One port exists now as well.

Also, since you apparently have a shift key on you keyboard, you might consider utilizing it more. Makes for nicer reading. Punctuation too.

The issue with this statement is that you're saying that because a piece of media (game in this instance) is utilising a popular background and setting, such as "hollywood" zombie dystopia or father-daughter/son relationships, there is a negative connotation associated with it. It's a reasonable point to make it some situations.

However, the truth as to why the majority enjoy games like The Last of Us or God of War is because of how well it actually delivers the whole experience, regardless of "tropes".

If the execution is masterful and the story-telling is compelling and engaging, who are we then criticise with stigma because it uses a popularised theme?

Man, that's seriously impressive. I loved the game and love the message that single player experiences can still work and be profitable. Now if only the AAA dev cycle wasn't 5+ years.
