Here's Mat Piscatella's video recap:

Top 20 games by dollar sales
  1. God of War
  2. Far Cry 5
  3. MLB 18: The Show
  4. Labo Variety Kit*
  5. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze*
  6. Mario Kart 8*
  7. Grand Theft Auto V
  8. Call of Duty: WWII
  9. Super Mario Odyssey*
  10. NBA 2K18
  11. PUBG Xbox
  12. Ghost Recon: Wildlands
  13. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild*
  14. Monster Hunter: World
  15. Rainbow Six: Siege
  16. A Way Out
  17. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life*
  18. Sea of Thieves
  19. Kirby Star Allies*
  20. FIFA 18
* Means digital sales aren't tracked

Multiple wins for PS4, from Mat's Twitter account:
US NPD SW - PlayStation 4 software dollar sales in April 2018 set an all-time April high for any platform since tracking began in 1995.
US NPD HW - PlayStation 4 generated the highest April unit sales for a Console since Nintendo Wii in April 2009, and the highest April dollar sales for a Console since Nintendo Wii in April 2008.
US NPD HW - Sony's PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console hardware platform in April, and remains the best-selling console hardware platform year to date.

God of War did very, very well:
US NPD SW - God of War reached the highest launch month dollar sales for an April release since Grand Theft Auto IV, which debuted in April 2008.

(and is probably responsible for much of the PS4's success for the month.)

The Labo situation is very interesting to me. The Variety Kit debuted at #4, which is pretty remarkable; but the Robot Kit didn't even break the top 20 (it made #21). One hit, one (likely?) miss.

So many first party games in the top 10..........So much for multiplats are the main drivers, SP is dead et al....

Sony's PS4 continues to break records 5 years in, hence why I said Sony must be bluffing with lower expectations for this financial year. 326k consoles is a record, so is GOW numbers and PRO numbers. I mean GOW is the most successful exclusive launch on a Sony platform (in terms of revenue) across PS1, PS2, PS3, beating out GTA San Andreas's launch on PS2.

GOW, that system seller, that PRO mover, it's great to see...And to think the PS4 is not even discounted yet, and they still have Spiderman, Dreams, and of course, PS4 will also get a boost from lots of third party software later this year, like RDR2.... Spiderman on it's own is going to be huge, and of course 2019 is a lock with Death Stranding, Days Gone, TLOU2 and Tsushima. Yes, sony is bluffing when they say they're on a downward spiral......

MLB the Show is a proven franchise, with the best baseball game out there and it's a juggernaut in sales for years ongoing with a mini cash cow in DLC, Yakuza doing so well is so nice to see. Hence the announcement of a tonne of Yakuza remasters recently..... So many exclusives and indies like concrete genie, VR games et al, really gives the PS4 it's well rounded library, it's the reason it's unstoppable.

One area people always seem to forget though, are accessories. Sony has always dominated there, those DS4's keep selling, a quality product which many PS4 owners also use on PC, even non-PS4 users. It's also important to have more than 1 with your console, when the other is charging or even for VS games. I have four DS4's and it's the first time I remember I've had so many controllers.... I remember a time when their Gold wireless headset and their camera was getting very good sales traction as well. A very good month all around.....So much for games journalists and their crusades, whether it's for online-only games, openworld games or bust, mobile games are the future or that console hardware as we know it, is dead......Those soothsayers eh!

I think the game journalist try to predict the future in their writing or on podcast so when that thing happens, they can get credit and say they saw it coming and that they were right. So far they've been wrong on most accounts with these predictions.

That seems like a pretty decent chart position for A Way Out in its second month (it only dropped a slot). I didn't expect that game to do much.

Yeah gambling predictions more or less, and you're right, they've been way off course...........It's just like the journalist (Colin Moriarty) who said that the majority of devs did not want the PS4 PRO and would not develop for it. So many wrong and flamey writeups.....

Fixed for you.
Yeah, that's another thing to note, is that it did this without digital. So sales are even more impressive than what's shown.

.

I wish more journalist would keep the same energy when they are proven to be wrong, compared to when they are predicting something to be true. They'll predict something will happen for many months worth of podcast, but when they are wrong they talk about it for 3 minutes and never bring it up again.

Many used to sale that consoles were dead and that the PS3/360 gen was the last good console generation and that all others in the future would be failures. BOOM wrong.
They also said that disc-based consoles were a thing of the past. Yet millions of people worldwide still are buying games in retail stores. BOOM wrong again.

I wished they talk more about "why" they were wrong and how everything doesn't need to change or disappear overnight. Sometimes people just like things the way they are.

Hah hah. There's a digital version of the Labo Kit not tracked by NPD?

Ohh, someone already noticed that.

PS4 is killing it!

God of War proves not everything has to be multiplayer focused. Single-player is alive and well just not very many developers doing it justice.

I reckon it was more a case of publishers & other money men wanting single player games to become defunct insofar as they could monetize massive online multiplayer games ala Destiny or COD instead of actually having to work at making a real story driven game (loot boxes + maps + team deathmatch = easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy).

God of War is far harder to make... yet far more resounding & memorable when it's done right. Games like Fallout, Skyrim (& their continued popularity) & even Horizon Zero Dawn should have already been a huge hint as per gamers being content to pay for & play single player games.

If single player games like god of war did end up dying out to the multiplayer clones then gaming as a whole would die for me, this is why I'm loving its success. Its a damn fine game also. Yakuza 6 is another game I played recently and loved. Single player games are the heart of gaming for me.

Don't think I've ever been on a thread with sea of thieves and you havent shat on it. Give it a rest, it's a success in Microsofts books

4 years in the making, sub 500k sales a success now? Quantum Break was a success too according to MS, look what happened to Remedy.

I will still never understand why MS or Nintendo never bothered with baseball games, especially as both had franchises they could have gone with (High Heat and Ken Griffey baseball)

More than 1 million players on launch day, more than two million soon after. Microsofts fastest selling new IP this gen. Not only that it was confirmed that these stats included sales and digital, not game pass.

Hmm, sounds like a colossal failure! Sure it wasnt god of war level, but I'm sure considering the games limitations, this is beyond what was expected.

You’re dead wrong. The majority was gamepass. Keep dreaming about 1 million sales launch day. MLB The Show is sitting at #8 year to date on npd, Sea of Thieves isn’t even in top 10.

Lmao no. YOU’RE wrong. Those 2mil were players. The game has not even sold over 1mil yet. You sure are gullible.

Are you saying the site, Rare Ltd and Microsoft are lying then? Because it pretty much said “2 million COPIES sold” and that’s not including game pass. Approxmity 283,000 of that grand total were on PC.

Could you show us where it disputes those claims?

The tweet was about 2 million PLAYERS, not copies sold. Yes whoever said copies sold, lied. MS said its the fastest selling new ip, they most likely meant that it beat quantum break first week numbers. Get your facts straight.

I hope those hardware sales teach Nintendo to never have another 7 months devoid of significant new releases again. Oh who am I kidding :/

Seems there are sites with conflicting reports, but alas my bad. ;)

But back to the current list, I’m surprised Labo is so high up. I didn’t think it would be that popular! But then again maybe I’m living under a rock.

SOT sales at March NPD were Windows Store + XBOX, they were not a million, farless two million in sales. MS is all about engagement numbers now, so they garnered lots of folk to play SOT via gamepass, whether that be with the 14 day trial or those who are $10/month subbed. Those gamepass numbers, trial or not + regular sales make up the 2 million for those who played, not those who bought SOT at $60.00.

Remember, MS now treats Windows Store+XBOX as the same platform according to Mat Piscatella and their NPD numbers for thieves was the combination of PC+XBOX. You buy it on PC, you also buy it for XBOX and vice versa. You buy one copy of SOT you can download it on the PC store with your MS account, sign into the XBOX app with another account and play. You can also play on two XBOXES in a household with a single digital copy as well, So MS can twist engagement numbers how they want.....but at the end of it all, you should realize they dont report sales figures anymore, so 2 million is not sales....

MS speaking about great sales for SOT was in contrast to Quantum Break, which was not even a great seller, so if SOT beat QB, it's nothing to speak of.....Still, just like MS hardware is constantly discounted, so is SOT, just a few weeks in you can get SOT for 40-50% off at stores, yet, that was not good enough for it to keep pace at the NPD. SOT took a serious plunge into the deep, I guess it walked the plank......Which brings me to another point, I said gamepass would affect sales on the MS platform, who testing/playing SOT on gamepass, will go buy it for $60.00 now or even less? Interest in the game has dwindled significantly and people have had their fill in quick order and realize that there's not much there, re-igniting interest in SOT is very slim as a result. Look at how MLB maintains it's sales, even GTAV, but SOT (MS's most hyped exclusive this year) sinks quicker than a pirate with weights attached......Even a niche game like Yakuza ranks higher in April without digital at that. There's no way MS does gamepass, with Gears or Halo on day 1, ces't impossible..

BTW to confusion about sales number is on purpose, MS is obfuscating them by talking about player and fastest selling relative to X. If they wanted to brag about sales, they would just announce the sales numbers like Sony did with GoW. So if they are not saying, they are probably not great.

I've literally seen Greenberg tweet to confirm that they were in fact digital and physical copies sold. If you seem to think there is some lying, fair enough. Leave it at that.

Anyways my point is that it was a success, whether a massive or partial one is irrelevant. Not sure many would disagree with that statement

I would. They spent many years of an expensive first party dev house to make a dud that has dropped off the sales lists and twitch in just a few weeks. They probably would have been better off making it F2P with cosmetic loot crates or just let it bake a bit more so it was not so content light.

I wish I could say publishers will learn from GOW that good single player can still sell well but in reality publisher like EA and Activision will look at GOW and they would think that game could make even more money if it had MP and loot boxes. Activision didn't even put SP in new Black Ops 4 because it was too much effort for them and I guess they rather have battle royal instead because that's where the real money is now.

Nice one for Yakuza. Song of life is such a great game. While not my favourite of the Yakuza series, it's still amazing. Glad to see it chart

The bolded is the only part that caught my eye in your long post. Do you have actual numbers? I’m not calling you a liar but Sea of Thieves was #2 in NPD sales in March. I’d imagine they were ATLEAST over a million.

Why? The position in the top ten only tell you something if you can bracket it between something higher and lower, whith known sales numbers. But if you know #1 sold 2m and that's it, #2 could be 1.999m or 10,000.

I only asked because thelastword thelastword seemed to indicate that he knew the numbers by saying they didn’t even surpass one million. Which would be an honest surprise considering the player count. Nonetheless the game appears to be successful which is good, pirate genre is often under utilized in the multiplayer market.

I agree! I am so far behind the Yakuza series, it’s one of the reasons I’m planning on getting a PS4Pro(that and HZD) I haven’t played Yakuza since it’s introduction of 1 & 2 on the PS2 and I enjoyed both games greatly. So it’s awesome that the series has been successful.

I see, I'm not sure if anyone knows any upper or lower bound at this point. I'm guessing it is not very high since MS is trying hard to hide it and talking up strange metrics like "fastest selling Rare game...". Success is relative. It either has to raise the value of the ecosystem (i.e. system seller) or sell enough to make back the sunk costs (years of developer time and marketing). The game pass really screws up traditional metrics, sales might have dipped due to 1 month passes and if those people didn't stick around it was lost revenue.

Sea of Thieves outsold MLB the Show on a revenue base last month.
MLB the Show has several high priced SKUs unlike Sea of Thieves.
MLB the Show had a record launch for the series

Sea of Thieves did extremely well.
