Any Switch owners feeling a tad miffed?

I can’t help but think how the Switch doesn’t seem to be delivering on its promise in terms of games, especially after the slim pickings of e3, as you have to wonder what Nintendo’s development teams have been doing for the past three years if all they’ve got to show for it is a fistful of overpriced ports?

It always seemed that the Switch was a forced release to pad out their financials as evidenced by the sparse releases in year one and I’d thought that year two would unleash the floodgates with new and resurrected IPs but all there is is more ports, nary a third party main line instalment and loads of e shop dross.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such poor support on such a beloved console before, at least not at its inception as even the Vita and Dreamcast trounced it at this point in the lifecycle in terms of software support and the sheer lack of said support from Nintendo is just downright bizarre.

At least the forthcoming custom firmware will do what Nintendont by bringing you some emulation (another strange oversight) but overall how do you feel about you’re investment? Personally I’m glad I held off and bought a Wii U instead as it’s got (had) some good exclusives and once hacked allows you to emulate an immense range of consoles really well.

Since the N64 I've treated Nintendo consoles as my secondary system to a main console. N64 complimented my PlayStation, I skipped over the GameCube until i bought one well after end of life, the Wii complimented my PS3, and the Wii U and Switch are both nice compliments to the PS4. I buy the Switch for the Nintendo produced games and those odd platform exclusives the same to land. I wouldn't buy a multiplatform title for Nintendo.

Because of this I am not bothered by the slow release of games for the Switch. I have Mario Oddessy, Zelda, Mario Kart, and Golf Story to stay busy with on the go, while playing the bigger titles on PS4 or PC. I am glad I am not overloaded with games for all three systems at this point in my life.

I don’t know about anybody else but I personally really looking forward to Octopath Traveler and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 DLC so I’m fine for this year.

Octopath Traveler is my most anticipated game of the year, but even still, that isn't enough.

For me it is because I also have PS4 and I have games like DQXI, VC4 and Xenoblade 2 DLC coming out in same month so I already have lot of games to play for this year. I also have Daemon X Machina, Fire Emblem and hopefully SMTV for next year.

Pretty much this, for better or worse nintendo platforms have never been a 'main' console for me.
I think the switch is great, I don't play nomad but sometimes when the TV isn't available for PS4 gaming it's nice to have an alternative too.

Nintendo has always been the second platform for a PlayStation or Xbox/SEGA since the N64 days. And if you thought the Switch would change that, you didn't remember the Wii U or Wii very well. And honestly, for a first time Nintendo console owner since the Wii, the Switch has been nothing but great for me. I got mine in very early June and been loving Mario Oddessy, Zelda, Mario Kart and Splatoon 2, not to mention the various indie games I got for it.

The drought, if you want to call it that, doesn't even compare to the stuff Vita owners had to deal with years ago. And you say 'but this is Nintendo's main platform! We should be getting games every month from them!' but are ignoring the fact that they unloaded all the big-guns last year.

By all accounts, Mario should have launched this year and we should have gotten even more ports. But what Nintendo did, was push Mario to release faster than we all expected and let Smash & Pokemon ride the latter half of 2018. Yes, it's a bit barren if you are ONLY a Nintendo fan that ONLY buys Nintendo games and OWNED a Wii U so ports that released this year feel more like insults than proper releases. If you are a Nintendo fan, you should know by now it's wise to own a Nintendo and a PlayStation/Xbox to get the most out of gaming.

I’m hoping we will get at least a surprise announcement this year of a port. I’d take Wind Walker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Super Mario WiiU, or Super Mario 3D World.

I keep thinking it’s possible Nintendo wanted the E3 hype to be pretty exclusive to Smash and is saving at least something for their next direct. That’s my hope anyway.

Since it's a Nintendo system I got it fully expecting it to be a secondary system with 2, maybe 3 interesting games a year. This year has been pretty bad IMO, with uninteresting first party releases and overpriced ports. As for third party, I think the support has been decent but when you combine that the Switch will mostly have the worst looking/performing version of most third party games with the fact that most of them are extremely overpriced then they lose any sort of appeal to me. I won't pay $60 for south park when I can get it for like $20 on every other platform, and as cool as the idea of Dragonball Fighterz on the Switch is, it becomes pretty uninteresting when you realise that it's going to be $60 by the time you can probably get the game + season pass for $40 everywhere else.

But last year was awesome and if next year we get Fire Emblem, a new mainline Pokemon and hopefully SMT V it will be awesome too. So the purchase still feels worth it to me

Mario Odyssee? Kirby Star Allies? FE Warriors? Bomberman R? Or better yet, get a Nintendo card and buy the Octo-Expansion for Splatoon 2 if you want a good 10+ hour story mode on top of the one included in the main game.

Nintendo console have always been my main. I dont care enough for the big aaa games or Sonys 1st party.
I have more games and more to come than i have time for. Luxury problem for me. It is like ppl always think that Nintendo is gonna revive old ip every month and that there have to be a Zelda og Mario every year or else lazy devs. I know noone ever said they expect it but between the lines somehow.

This is why when I really wanted to play BoTW I just rented someone's Wii-U off Craigslist, haha. I was a big Nintendo fan back in the N64 era. I think they treat their fans like crap now, making you buy the same game again and again and they have tepid 3rd party support. Nah, I'll just rent a console once every 10 years a Nintendo game looks as epic at BoTW did. I'm good.

No, I'm still really happy with the Switch. Nintendo has made some bad decisions (no Virtual Console, the voice chat app debacle) and the 2018 first-party lineup is mediocre, but it's still almost exactly what I want in a system. It starts up extremely quickly, I never have to deal with lengthy system/game updates, I can take it anywhere at any time (even mid-game), I have all my games with me at all times (all digital except for Breath of the Wild), and both controllers are great / have good battery life. I have a healthy backlog to play through right now and am excited about 8-10 upcoming games during the second half of the year which is more than I have time for even if a new WoW expansion and Dragon Quest XI weren't coming out. It's my most played system (ignoring PC) since the Dreamcast.

Here's what I own that I haven't started or am in the middle of: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, The Banner Saga I, Hollow Knight
Here's what I will possibly play in the next 6 months: Lumines Remastered, the Mario+Rabbids Donkey Kong DLC, Octopath Traveler, The Banner Saga II & III, Bad North, Undertale, Wargroove, Valkyria Chronicles, The Xenoblade Chronicles 2 DLC, Megaman 11, Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu, and Super Smash Bros Ultimate
It's way too much for me.

I feel like I got exactly what I expected. A very niche console that plays a very narrow selection of games from the company who's continued to bring home solid titles.

Think of Nintendo like an Apple product. When you go Apple, you go all in on Apple. If you bought a Switch to play every game there is to play, that's your mistake. Nintendo has been a complete loser in the third party gaming market for well over a decade so there's no excuse to act like you didn't know what you were buying.

Nintendo's business model is very clear: You will only play Nintendo games through Nintendo hardware. Either you desire Nintendo games THAT MUCH, or you should've gone with Sony/Microsoft

For a while now my Nintendo system was always a secondary console. I only want one or two great exclusives per year out of the thing. I play all my multi platforms on PS4 and the Switch is my portable gaming system. I know Octopath Traveller will last me until Smash comes out. Since the first party games on Nintendo systems rarely see price drops, I'm fine with fewer quality titles that I'm ready to purchase at launch.

I can see how it would be hard having the Switch as your only system but I know a lot of people happy to play the great indie titles popping up on e shop regularly.

Not at all. I have zero regrets about my Switch. I am constantly using it every day (mainly because I game on it when taking a shit). I hardly game in general anymore so the Switch is actually my primary gaming device for now.

I have plenty to look forward to in my Switch BECAUSE it's my main platform of choice. I'm waiting for Megaman X collections, Megaman 11, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, Dark Souls Remastered, Octopath, TWEWY, Tales of Vesperia, etc. If you've already played or plan to play most of these on other consoles, there won't be much left to do, since Nintendo's first party output is slow this year, at least regarding megaton games. But then again, there's no lack of games. It's more a matter of what's your console of choice.

My guess is that Nintendo are purposely holding back new original content so that they can maximise the Wii U ports, give indies and 3rd parties a bigger slice of the pie creating a healthy ecosystem and let’s not forget that the system was breaking sales records - they don’t need to release their games yet.

That’s my take on it anyway. That or there is an upgrade coming and they’ve switched internal development to the new box.

“Nintendo” and “patience” and “lack of quality games”, all go hand in hand, since the n64 days. Nothing new here. However, when they put out a great game it usually is A+++++ - you just have to wait for it. Hopefully they give us another Zelda for switch, because botw is still one of the best games this console generation.....even if it’s technically a wiiu game...

Playing Octo Expansion and Hallow Knight on my bed, not complaining one bit. Buying Dark Souls when it drops so I can continue playing on my bed.
Currently contemplating getting Mario Tennis Aces for some local multiplayer with friends, just waiting to hear about what type of support we can expect this year outside of new characters.

Yeah another Zelda like how they pumped out Majoras Mask after OoT would be great. It must be very likely that will happen?

Their frontloaded, hold back Wii U titles for Switch strategy is really just short term. The Switch is going to have trouble unless all third party gets on board with all their games.

I'm not bothered too much as I really bought my switch for my youngest to play Mario Odyssey for Christmas which he loved and recently Mario Kart which he's only played a couple times. I've only played BOTW and wasn't into it. It barely gets any action right now, but we've already had some fun with it and I'm sure some stuff will be out eventually. I kind of expect it from Nintendo tbh and knew that going in.

This is why I am waiting until the inevitable hardware refresh happens. By then it will be cheaper, the kinks will be worked out, and it will have a really nice library of games.

I've been pretty happy overall: I've put more time into Zelda than I have anything else in years, Mario was much, much better than I expected and there's been plenty of indies besides. There's a fair amount of stuff on the horizon that I'm interested in: No More Heroes, Kentucky Route Zero (whenever that raises its head again), Smash. Biggest letdown so far is the end of VC: I don't know what they're thinking.

I have a nice library of games so far including several shmups that otherwise would cost me $100s to get a legit, physical copy. We're just over a year into the system's life and I already own 14 physical games plus 6 or 7 digital games.

I'm a picky gamer. That's a really good start. I still have yet to purchase some games on my wishlist like Hyrule Warriors, Xenoblade 2, Sushi Strikers, and (maybe) Splatoon 2.

Also, there are several smaller titles coming soon that I am eager to play on my Switch: Sonic Mania Plus, Monster Boy, Flinthook, Slime-San, Dead Cells, SNK Heroines, Blade Stranger, and Crystal Crisis, plus some bigger ones like MH: Generations Ultimate, Octopath, and Mega Man 11.

I can understand if people are disappointed. The 3DS also had a slow, miserable start and look at that system now.

I have Tropical Freeze, Mario Odyssey and Zelda.

All three are huge games and despite me getting Odyssey on release I only barely started the post-game stuff.

So no, my Switch is keeping me busy and I like not having spent a fortune on games since getting the system and pro controller was expensive enough.

I mean it's a nintendo console... it's been this way since N64. Even the few consoles that had a lot of games were full of shovelware...

I have tons of games for the NS. I just picked up The Lost Child, which I'm having a lot of fun with. The next couple of months are gonna be rough on my wallet on the NS and I'm okay with that. Lots of games to play. Not sure why people are saying there aren't enough games coming out these next couple of months....

It's really hard to have non-stop AAA games. Nintendo came out guns blazing with BotW and Mario Odyssey. I expected 2018 to be much less exciting, but 2019 will probably come back with a splash.

im glad i did not make the same mistake i did with the Wii and Wii U. which was buying the systems when there was only 1 or 2 games i wanted to play. I'll get a switch after its heavily discounted and there are atleast 5-6 games i really want to play. Right now there is maybe 2...

Hopefully we will start to see some 3DS games coming to the system soon. I would love to play a Link Between Worlds.

The thing about Nintendo is that they have so many good games they could re-release at any given moment. I just hope they notice the gap that exists for this next 5 months and do something about it.

Before any 3DS games comes to Switch, we first need Tokyo Mirage Session on Switch. That game was great game it really needs second chance on Switch.

I have 2 games: mario and mario rabbids. The only games that are worth their full price. I have zelda on wiiu (btw worst zelda game yet). The rest are ports (which I mostly own on wiiu too) or extremely low budget games that at most should be $15-$20 (and I'm talking about nintendo published games here).

For example, kirby game at ful price as god of war, detroit, horizon, spiderman, tlou2 etc... like please nintendo.

Smash seems to be the next and last worthwhile title for a long time (and i still consider it smash 4.5...). So that makes 3 games total... That's a fail imo.

Yea, this year atm kinda feels like Wii U's final 18 months- Prob should try that downloaded octopath demo but more triple A was to be expected concidering how hard they cut down on releases 2 years ago (spoiler just like 1 game on wii u).
Xenoblade 2 was great, and prob getting that dlc once it drops, but 1 game (kirby was not as good as the 3ds titles, higher price, no 3d and 30 fps) for the first 6 months makes me believe the staff cut off a couple of years back are starting to really show now.

In addition to my Switch I own a PC and a PS4 so I haven't even begun to exhaust the Switch's library, plus I skipped the WiiU so I get to play all those games now for the first time.

I'm just curious, what kinda games are you guys even looking to play on your systems (if you even have one)? I just don't see how people who like games are hurtin' for things to play unless you only play Nintendo games or AAA games. RPGs, fighters, platformers, are in serious abundance on the platform. I'm mainly an RPG and action game player and the NS has been amazing for me so far.

I especially like the part where people say Wii U sucked... while all the big games on the switch are Wii U ports (Bayonetta 1+2, Mario Kart 8, DK Country TP, Zelda BotW, and probably 1-2 others I'm missing). Strip Wii U ports away and it is extremely disappointing.

It is a narrative that is inorexably tied to Nintendo.

It's a by-product of people spending more time thinking about playing than actually playing. If I think about what games I could play on Switch I run out pretty fast; if I play them though, I'll be busy for a good little while.

There are more games on other systems but most well-balanced individuals will not be able to play all games on one system, especially if they have a second console or a PC.

There are lots of games to play. That the Switch has fewer is a fact but hardly an issue at this juncture: Nintendo was on fire for all of 2017, you can't always be on all-cylinders.

The Switch only does half of its job right - it excels as a handheld but absolutely fails as a home console (even the UI is displayed at 720p on TVs lol). Nintendo's decision to make weak hardware (again) has doomed it to be a porthouse for several year old games (but those ports are still sold for $60! What a deal!). Sure, there are a ton of great 2D indies, but that's not what most people bought the console for. Most bought it for Nintendo games and even on that front it's not doing too well (unless you skipped the Wii U).

That said, it's pretty much exactly what I expected from Nintendo... so whatever. I have other consoles to play on while I await the next quality exclusive Switch game.
