So many Shenmue facebook groups are in full damage control mode trying to say the footage we are seeing via streamers doesn't represent the final product because it doesn't have the day one patch... well that's just fucking sad...

Unfortunately, I don't think these hold up as well as many of us expect or hope they would, and I imagine we're going to see a lot of disappointed first timers used to today's games. I really hope I'm wrong, but I honestly think it might tarnish the general gaming fanbase's overall image of the series.

Meh, it can only do more good than harm in the long run I think. I would find it strange if people have improper expecations considering people are pretty honest when talking about how unique the game is...

nothing wrong with it. They probably just don't remember how bad the graphics are. Of course for their time they were amazing, but increasing its res was never gonna make it look pristine new.
New footage shows some graphical glitching, really bad sound glitching, and new camera issues. They're saying it will all be patched day one but WTF what happened to shipping games complete? Plus more importantly it's SEGA and D3t, I don't expect them to do a good job patching out glitches...

Actually saw the game on sale already today. Made me check my Amazon order on the spot wondering why it wasn't sent yet. On sale 5 days in advance is new to me round where I live.

I wasn't aware the game will come out so soon and it's even released at a budget price....

Tempting. I played Shenmue 1 back then on the Dreamcast, but didn't make it far. Don't really remember why though. Guess the concept of a open world game with this level of detail and this ambitious was too much, for my younger self to grasp.

I'm waiting to see if the day one patch fixes everything before committing to purchase. Even then, I may wait to replay these once Shenmue 3 has a solid release date as I like the idea of going straight from 2 to 3 rather than finishing them now and waiting ages for 3 to arrive.

Guessing that might be revealed on Tuesday.

Is it fair to assume we'll see some fan patches for the Steam Version? Like better textures, and minor gameplay tweaks?

Mine is coming before lunch time. I've just subscribed to Amazon Prime to get the physical edition whithing the very 1st hours. I can' beleived i's coming tomorow.
I loved so much the slow story in Shenmue 1. I can't wait to expetienre this again on... a Sony hardware. It's so creazy!

Respect.

You'll love prime with those sweet, sweet 20% discount on new games.

Been playing the first hour of Shenmue I. I’m unlocking achievements but it’s telling me the game doesn’t have any. Maybe that will be fixed tomorrow. The Audio is jacked at parts. Easily the worst thing so far. Fingers crossed This gets addressed in day 1 patch.

Edit: the load times are dope!

The load times are so good they're almost jarring to me lol but that's a good thing to get used to...

In my heart of hearts, I just want to mod my DC and play on the original hardware...

But this may be too convenient to pass up.

If the reviews with the day 1 patch show that the audio stuff is cleaned up, and everything's smooth, I'll probably wind up with a PS4 copy.

Been playing for too long imo, I'm trying to see when the game picks up but it just doesn't.
I missed this when it first released as I never had a dreamcast but the hype surrounding it then and praises it gets got me interested, but the game is dated as fuck, I know PS1 games that have aged better.
in fact it's nothing to do with age, this would have been poor 20 years ago.
I really wanna like it but there's fuck all to do but ask the same questions with worse voice acting than Resident Evil 1.
I thought the fighting would liven it up but I haven't had 1 in 3 hours.

Catching up on the YouTube reviews for this now, and I don't think I've ever seen reviewers with tears in their eyes before. It's so impressive to see the emotional impact the original release, and also this re-release is having on folks. I really hope this sells well to justifies all the effort and waiting that has gone into it.

Hyped to be playing it tomorrow, I never even finished Shenmue 2 back when I had it on the Dreamcast so it's weird to think that there is some classic Shenmue waiting for me to discover it tomorrow. Hype!

I really wanna like it but there's fuck all to do but ask the same questions with worse voice acting than Resident Evil 1.

Don't beat yourself up over not liking it, it was quite divisive when it first came out too. But of course over time, the only folks who kept talking about it were those who fell on the adoration side originally; so I expect quite a few people are going to play it for the first time with this re-release and be completely baffled by this 'all time classic' persona it's had built up around it.

LOL, I'm sorry you wasted your money but you prolly should have looked into what you were buying. There's actually a ton of stuff do do in the game but unlike Yakuza it doesn't all just jump in front of you...

If it helps, skip the first game as it's much slower. The second game is WAY more fast paced...

I'm just scratching my head mostly, a classic is a classic.
Silent Hill is a Classic, Silent Hill 2 is Legendary
MGS 1 and 2, this the Caliber I was expecting, ok I did link it to the Yakuza series, because it is the foundation of Yakuza I can see that.
But it's not currently from what I've played qualifing as an average game.

I did, watched all DF's retros, the "Why you should Buy Shenmue" Videos
Everyone was chaffin shit, no wonder they use the Japanese dub and only show certain parts.
but that my early impressions, I wasn't impressed with Yakuza when it first release and now I own them all.
I'm gonna push through Shenmue 1 and Shenmue 2 if I have to, a Classic is a classic like I said before.
I'm just not seeing it yet, if it helps I'm looking for Sailors, There's a joke somewhere there lol.

I think that it is a game that makes maybe the mistake of making people feel as if it has to be an Uncharted hurry-up-action-adventure... try to take your time a bit more maybe, try to look more at the detail in the shops, in the streets, in people’s daily routine, the weather (which was reproducing actual weather recorded when the game is set), etc... may not seem a technical achievement today, but for the time (... and for the specs Dreamcast had) I think it did push boundaries. Then the game may not be for you, but I still regard it as one of the industry master pieces.

The game may seem weird at times, but I think it takes itself more seriously than one would think. It is no tense movie style drama, but its lighthearted nature does not mean it is a parody of the genre either.

Crushed blacks, worse pop in than the original, tons of sound issues, lots of problems. Hoping the patch helps...
Yeah I noticed the crushed blacks in other videos as well. I guess I'll have to change my TV settings. Unless it has it's own brightness setting that I can play with.

I didn't realize that this was releasing this week. I just pre-ordered on Xbox.com to get the $3 off. Looking forward to playing tomorrow.

Shenmue is nothing like Yakuza. Don’t listen to anyone who compares those series. They’re either trolls, butt hurt Yakuza fans or butt hurt Shenmue fans. No in between.

Shenmue I and II are my favorite games but it’ll be a surprise to you when I say I hated Shenmue 1 my first play session. Keep playing. Take it slow. Explore. It’s a chill game. Don’t compare it to Yakuza. Shenmue is not the foundation for Yakuza. They are literally two different genres.

You’re also at the worst part of the game. The beginning of Shenmue sucks.

I've had two glitches at the starting house. Both times on the flashbacks (letter and tree) where it just cut to somewhere outside the level and the audio played. Ps4 Pro, 4k tv.

There's a contrast setting that does help a bit...

Yeah I always play with the Japanese dub, the English is awful. I have nostalgia for it but I accept that it's garbage and would rather play in Japanese any day. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's worse than Resident Evil but it's certainly comparable...

As far as where you're at, you've barely scratched the surface of the game. Shenmue 1 especially is a very intimate game and like I said nothing is going to pop out at you right away like it does in 2. Trust me, you will be enjoying yourself soon, especially once you figure out how the game works.

I agree with this whole post except those last two lines. The beginning is not the worst part of Shenmue at all, but it's one of the most confusing, disorienting, and overwhelming gaming experiences you'll have your first time playing it. You're going to catch the groove soon enough though and trust me you will love it. The beginning is great because there is so much downtime and things to explore, without much of a clear goal where to go next. Find those sailors and get back to us when you're on disk 2!

I know the dialogue is still low res/muffled sounding, but has the overall sound design at least beeen updated to Dolby 5.1?

You're in for a treat. For all the criticism the Shenmue series gets for being dull/slow paced/pointless/etc. the buildup to the final confrontation and its aftermath in Shenmue 2 is outstanding (and surprisingly emotional).
