The next XBOX really needs to impress me in order for me to buy it

Cool blog post.

On a more serious note, I’m a happy XO customer that without a doubt will buy the next Xbox instead of PlayStation. I know that most gamers like what Sony offers, but it ain’t interesting for me.

Not me. I have such a huge library of Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games that they basically have me by the balls. I’ve been Apple’d.

Personally I would like to see Microsoft make a comeback and trample Sony.

Sony's exclusives were just too good this generation for me to play on Xbox.

I'm pretty sure they realized that (what with all the studio purchasing) and are poised to give Sony stiffer competition this time around.

Next generation should be interesting.

Like every freaking month we get the same shitty low-effort OT at SonyGAF. Like seriously, every single time there is a XBOX IS DOOMED! MICROSOFT WILL ONLY FOCUS ON PC!

This is just nonsense.

It's a done deal if they incorporate that deal where you make payments. Sure, a PC is better but I can't get a phatty PC for monthly payments with zero interest.

They need games. That's all. Who cares about hardware features when there aren't enough games.

Microsoft got their hardware down this gen (Surface, X1S, X1X)
Microsoft got their features down this gen (back compat, Game Pass, cross play, EA All Access, Xbox All Access)
Microsoft just doubled their first party studios

It seems everything is lining up for a very impressive next-gen

exactly and sony on the other hand? doesnt even allow EA ACCESS, crossplay not even with NINTENDO (!) - they are so backwards. Sony will bomb hard next gen.

I just don't understand this mentality.
BC on XBTwo is useless to me.
I already have an XBOne right there under my TV with nothing I want to play on it.
When I have BC on my shiny new box.....there'll still be nothing I want to play on it. But even if there was, I already have an XBOne anyway, so I'll just stick with that.

there are plenty of games to play, not only exclusives. E.g I'm really happy that i can play mass effect on my newest console. Yes it is available for pc, too, but a console is more comfortable to play on tv.
PS4 not being backwardscompatible was a real bummer for me. Well xb1 at launch, too. But at least they delivered at that front.
being compatible with the last gen makes the jump to the newer much easier. Btw, still waiting for a hdmi console that is ps2 compatible. The early ps3s were to expensive and allmost all compatible consoles already died.

Yeah I’d say no. Sony can’t literally screw up. It seems like Sony players in general are more loyal than Xbox players. Xbox players left Xbox to PS4 after the E3 reveal. Meanwhile Sony are arrogant and holds the entire industry back, and if Sony didn’t have exclusives, then they had nothing compared to Microsoft.

For most people exclusives aren’t important. It’s the exclusives on their preferred platform that’s important.

Doubled their mediocrity with two unproven studios, two average studios, and a studio that was already making exclusives for them.

Good luck competing against Sony or Nintendo's long-standing dev teams that have been around for generations.

It is, but I don't blame him since Compulsion's We Happy Few was executed pretty poorly. Same goes for Undead's State of Decay 2.

Ninja Theory should do good work though. The Initiative may not reach Naughty Dog or Guerrilla level on their first game or two, but they'll be close.

We Happy Few wasn't executed poorly. It has a few issues, but most games these days do. The game was in early access, and everyone who played it raved about it. Only after MS aquired Compulsion did people find problems with it. It was in the top 10 last month for PS4, and that's excluding digital. There's irony in there somewhere.

As for Undead Labs. It's a small studio. It could really go either way.

As far as Sony's studios go... Let's not act like Guerrilla Games has some long storied history of great games. When it comes to great games, they've got Horizon ZD, and that's it. The first KZ was pretty good, but that's it. They developed Horizon with a bunch of help from ND I'd bet as well.

I've been impressed with Sony's' exclusives this generation. I was impressed with Microsoft's exclusives last generation. I moved from 360 to PS4 for obvious reasons, DRM, higher power console etc. etc.

I don't feel brand loyalty to either really but I am acutely aware that I will probably buy whatever console releases first. I am not "hardcore" in the way a lot of people are that buy multiple consoles. I usually stick with one for the whole generation mainly due to time constraints.

I am looking forward to the announcements in the coming 6 months to a year hopefully.

Next xbox needs to make dashboard speed priority

i thought X would allow for quicker dashboard but once again just moving tabs is laggy and glitchy, trying to move down to my Groups is always laggy, the store reload thing is really annoying (where it kicks you to the top when trying to scroll down)

The everythings on PC too really isnt a factor for me cause i tried PC gaming but it just wasnt for me, people say you can still couch game on PC but there is still alot of annoyances with that (not to mention you cant really play online games since without K+M its not fair)

My next Xbox purchase depends almost entirely on the Halo franchise. I enjoyed my time with Halo 5 MP but eventually moved on to Overwatch and now mostly game on the PS4 as most of my friends are there.

A really good Halo would bring me back to Xbox though as it's the only franchise I miss that doesn't really have a decent equivalent on PlayStation.

Maybe you've got a bad unit, or your Internet is slow. The dash used to be slow a couple of years ago, but everything on the dash is comparable to my PS4 now.

The PS4 store is a bit shit compared to XB1 though.

Because it's convenient to have One Box under the TV that you can play them all on.

MS is in good shape for next gen, except for one area and it's the most important: 1st party exclusives.

Them acquiring all of those studios earlier this year should help with that in a big way.

Perhaps the disconnect is that I can think of lots of games I'd like to play on xbone right now, and I don't have one. Obviously if I already had one I wouldn't care as much about the nextbox unless it has exclusives I care about...

Don't post like this...you can argue what you like about something till your face turns blue...but calling anyone who buys an Xbox a "douche"?
I don't understand people who buy Xbox, to me they're straight tasteless "douche" and I don't mean that as an insult but as the only representation I have (including in my friends) of people who go for a Xbox over a Playstation despite the superiority of the latter on every aspects, most importantly the one that matters which is games.

The original Xbox was an infamy in terms of size, design, controller, system but it had the upper-hand in raw power with not much of a catalogue to buy it, and of course it was a failure. The 360 is okay, I'd even say it was as good as the PS3 (incidentally it sold as much). But the Xbox One never had anything going on for: it was once again bulkier, while slightly less powered, badly designed, they tried to pull all those Microsoft DRM BS nobody wants, and had a very meagre catalogue to back it up not even mentioning VR compatibility, but it does one thing way better than PS which is "backward compatible" catalogue (boo to Sony for not doing that).

So yeah, why anybody would buy a lesser system on absolutely every aspect which has even the number speaking against it is beyond me.

As the Microsoft continues down this path of having every Xbox game and accessory fully compatible with the PC on day one I see no reason to ever buy another Xbox console

Am I alone in my thinking?

No, we did a poll recently, and among the PC owners, Xbox was the least popular choice -- presumably because of the reasons you're mentioning.

I don't understand people who buy Xbox, to me they're straight tasteless "douche" and I don't mean that as an insult

lol. "don't mean that as an insult."

The "might as well just play on PC" narrative is strong on Gaf, which is a harder core and more technically savvy user base, but for the majority of gamers a PC is a huge stumbling block.

This is true.

So I'm going to throw a wrench this conversation and go on limb say IF Microsoft can pull off streaming games well enough, their next system can be very successful.

I've recently tried out the Nvidia Shield streaming service and it worked very, very well. Full 1080p and solid 60fps 99% of the time. They offer some free games with the Shield and everyone I tried worked almost flawlessly. It was an enticing idea that I could just play a game simply by selecting it.

Mind you, this was with a wired gigabit connection. But my friends have had equal success on wireless connections.

I know the argument of bandwidth caps and internet speeds are a factor - but as far as the technology goes, I do think this can be a viable gaming solution.

Personally, I'm not a fan of a system that entirely revolves around streaming games - but to the average consumer - it's like a Netflix style of gaming.

What Xbox needs are exclusive games that I can't get anywhere else, including PC. That's not the way they seem to be trending now.

If you want or have a PC just get them on PC then MS doesn't really care or they wouldn't be supporting PC.

If you only want an xbox if someone else can't play the same games you then have bigger problems.

It's the former. I have a powerful PC, so what would be my reasoning to buy an Xbox if Microsoft is just going to put all of their games on both? If Sony put all of their games on PC, then I wouldn't have a PS4 Pro.

Also, while it's true that Microsoft makes their money either way on games, a big reason they might want someone on their console is to have them in their ecosystem, which wont really happen on PC.

Xbox One X is so good and delivers such great gaming conditions in 1080p that it is indeed going to be difficult to persuade me into buying the new Xbox. I am not going 4K anytime soon.

I am not so sure, if MS can add enough value to their subscription services then even PC gamers will consider paying that monthly/yearly fee. I could see a future where Xbox Live Gold includes online play, games with gold, gamepass, game streaming and other features. Parity across all platforms as far as features and pricing goes.

I don't get why you think it's a bad thing for you, you have the PC, you are quids in.

Keeping all the games for xbox and not supporting PC, a few years ago, was a source of much moaning, now PC gets everything it's a source of much moaning.

For me they kind of just need to keep going the way they are going. Give me the same value going forwards and give me a great powerful console with a robust online infrastructure and great games and I’ll buy one. Maybe not at launch but I’ll buy one.

Microsoft got their hardware down this gen (Surface, X1S, X1X)

I would agree with this. Just to get it out of the way I’ve been a PlayStation fan since I was a kid. PlayStation just speaks to me more as a person who plays games with the catalog and types of games they get that other platforms don’t (or not as often).

Microsoft has come so far after their initial reveal. Looking back at the original reveal and then seeing where they are now is hilarious. The platform has so much value with Game Pass and EA Access. They have also introduced features like digital returns and wishlist (coming soon?) which are great. On top of that they have made headroom in Japanese games as well with lots of great Japanese games that generally would have been stuck on PlayStation coming out. Let’s not forget BC (I’ve been having a lot of fun with MW2 lately at least when I can get a full lobby).

The Xbox One X is a amazing console with great features and great games but Xbox still has plenty of work to do.

Free to Play online games should not require Xbox Live to play and I love that Playstation does that. Games like Fortnite, Paladins, Blacklight or FFXIV don’t require PS+ to access and are truly free (or in the case of FF there is a sub fee after level 25). They also need to work on the OS in my opinion. The PS4 OS is simple and for the most part easy to navigate. To get to my games I press a button and scroll.

I love my Xbox consoles. I have the original, a first generation Xbox 360, an original Xbox One, and an Xbox One X. I have over 250 physical and digital titles in total across my systems. IMO, I think the current Xbox One controller is one of the best controllers of any generation.

With all that being said, I really need to be impressed with the next Xbox console in order for me to buy one. As the Microsoft continues down this path of having every Xbox game and accessory fully compatible with the PC on day one I see no reason to ever buy another Xbox console (outside of replacing a failed existing console). Maybe even then. Perhaps MS will release BC for old XBOX games on the PC.

I might as well buy a used mid range PC and play the same games. Perhaps this is Microsoft’s console strategy all along? Move people away from consoles and back to the PC.

Am I alone in my thinking?

No, you're not. I have been with Xbox since the original console, and have literally never owned a Playstation. This lackluster genre in combination with how atrocious Microsoft's customer service is has convinced me to go with Playstation over Xbox for the first time in my life. Seriously disappointed with how they ruined this generation.

I don't think they necessarily ruined anything. I'm just really unclear about Microsoft's vision. If their vision is to become a Sega while still producing their own hardware, then I feel like they have already lost.

it sounds like they're moving toward streaming anyway and games as a service... seems to me you'll eventually pay monthly and play their games on whatever box has an xbox app.

How is that not an insult! haha

I think they're tasteless from an objective standpoint, the rest, put in quotation marks purposefully is just to echo the image many have but actually some Xbox campaigns (remember Dorito and Mountain Dew?) project. This being said, my point was that I don't understand why would anyone confronted with a choice that seems obvious to me and the majority of gamers (by the numbers), would indeed go for the Xbox, I'd like to know what are the arguments and incentives.

Yes. I own both a beefy PC (1080 TI, Ryzen 7) and a One X. The reason why I play mostly on the latter is because it is just so much more comfortable. And I love playing in 4K/60 (or 1440p/60). The One X is silent, it is powerful and it plays whatever I throw at it. I have a 600 game Steam library and a 500 game Xbox library. Really the only thing Microsoft needs to get right with its next gen console is exclusives.

I believe you are asking the question about the Xbox One and PS4 at the time they released rather than right now? To me it would be an even easier choice to get an Xbox One today because they are doing almost everything better than the PS4.

I was one of those "douches" who decided on an Xbox One over a PS4. I only tend to buy one console that I go with for the entire generation as I wouldn't have enough time to play all the exclusives and multiplats for one platform let alone all of them. Previously I tended to go Nintendo but the WiiU fiasco it made me look elsewhere!

I guess the reasons I went with an Xbox were that the launch titles and upcoming exclusives interested me more than the perceived performance delta between the two (I was coming from Nintendo, performance wasn't that big a deal for me!). You got to remember that things have flipped 180 from how things were at the start of the gen. The Xbox had more exclusives for the first year or so yet the PS4 had the performance edge. I actually liked Kinect, it seemed like a next gen innovative feature being able to control the console with voice and gesture so I didn't mind paying a premium for it. Xbox Live had a much better reputation coming of the back of the PS360 generation. I thought that with MS being a behemoth in software development that the OS would come along much quicker. I just generally had more confidence in an MS console over the duration of the generation than a Sony machine.

In hindsight I am not disappointed and didn't think I made a bad choice. I feel that the Xbox eco-system is way more developed and forward thinking than PlayStation with services like BC and Gamepass. I have enjoyed the Xbox exclusives such as Sunset Overdrive, Titanfall, Ori, D4 and the abundance of Forzas with only really Spider-Man and Horizon ZD the titles that interest me on PS. Because I never had either a PS3 or X360 I am really enjoying the games that I am getting with Games with Gold 360BC. All in all I have enjoyed my launch window Xbox One and have no regrets. The choice too seemed obvious to me.
