God of War didn't do great in UK relatively speaking.

Sony, however, had a good year first-party wise. Last year's Gran Turismo bomb hurt a lot.

Gran Turismo Sport did not hurt anything last year.

What?

Gran Turismo has been one of the more successful games of all time in UK and also recent entries did tremendously well. Gran Turismo was a bomb and Sony knows that.

Wrong! All GT's ( even the bestselling GT3 ) sold million of copies later in its lifespan, not 10 million in first 2 months.

GT Sports disappeared from all charts and also launch aligned Sports is faaar behind all previous entries.
GTS is in the UK chart thought the year... a lot of times.

Damn, almost 2 : 1 in PS4 favor. It is also weird that X1 was always on sale, unlike PS4. There is absolutely a thing when it comes to devaluing your product when it seems like it is ‘on sale’ all the time.

In the launch year? Only GT5 probably sold more than GTS.

Source?

GT3, for example, sold almost 6m units in 7 years in Europe alone. That would mean 800k+ units per year if we think that sales were constant throughout the 7 years which is of course a very conservative estimate. There's no way GTS did more than GT3 in the first year but anyway this doesn't really matter as GTS will end up being the lowest selling entry in the franchise.

Wrong again! Multiple times, like ethomaz stated, was on charts many times and also GTS during launch month outsold GT1, GT3 and GT6 in UK

GTS is in the UK chart thought the year... a lot of times.

Talk about saying things without check first.

In UK it occasionally charted but with very low numbers (charting in UK Top 40 might mean selling below 1.000 units in some periods of the year) but overall the game is done. In Japan, for example, the game sold below 300k units and didn't have any legs---5 did 600k+ while previous games were million sellers.

Also, GTS will never sell as well as previous entries and this has been clear for months. In US the game sold very little (GT on PS1 and PS2 sold amazingly well in US; GT1 and 2 were the best-selling PS1 games in the US).

Those Forza numbers are high, that's including bundles right?

Also wasn't GTSport like $20 after a couple weeks in UK? I'd definitely say it bombed.

What are you talking about dude?

You said GTS did hurt Sony last year in UK when in fact it didn't. Only Spider-Man can be said to have sold more than it this year looking at the first-party games.

After that you tried to downplay without any data the sales of a game comparing it to lifetime sales of others games...

And yes GTS sold better in UK than GT3 at launch.... GT3 sales are really big because it sold for so many years... GT5 is the fastest GT game game in terms of how much it sold in few years.

If you are interested that is the TOP20 sales of 2010 in UK.

All formats top 50:

Yes, bundles. But FH4 is also on sale for more than a 2 months now. Game is on sale in UK constantly below 30 GBP ( cheapest 22 GPB ), unlike FH3, who kept the price constantly for first few months around 40 GBP.

UK is not that big of a game market compared to other euro nations . not sure why do we have to mention them seperately. pretty sure germany or something sells similar figures

What you expected? Square-Enix have much to blame too mind you. They choice a horrible date to release a 'one year' game at the full price. They could at least put another date.
I bought the game one month later because they don't even release at the day one here in Brazil. Its one of my best 2018 imo, but square enix deserves all the hate for bad choices.

Its performance was underwhelming.

The fact that it was among the best-selling games of the year doesn't matter much when the game had much bigger expectations---the first new GT since forever and one of the biggest IPs in the market.

GTS will never sell as well as previous entries which is something Sony doesn't want to for obvious reasons.

But I let numbers speak for themselves: https://uk.camelcamelcamel.com/PlayStation-9827450-Gran-Turismo-Sport/product/B00ZG1SVA4

This is the retail price of GTS on Amazon, which is a pretty good indicator of average retail price. GTS had its price slashed soon after launch because Sony shipped too much and there were so many unsold copies in UK.

The average retail price fluctuated on around £20 which indicates the game really sold below expectations.

Depends on the source - I think Germany is usually 1st and UK 2nd but sometimes it's reversed. Germany had an unfair advantage - citizens are legally required to buy 5 copies of train simulator each year.

Worldwide, GT3 definitely hasn't sold less than GTS in the "first few months".

Just for reference, GT3 sold 1.2m in Japan only in the first 3 months: https://sites.google.com/site/gamedatalibrary/games-by-year/2001-weekly

In US, Gran Turismo 3 was the 6th best-selling game in 2001 (these data accounts for the first 6 months in the market as the game launched in July): https://web.archive.org/web/20040814133238/http://www.npd.com/dynamic/releases/press_020207.htm

Also, the comparison doesn't make much sense as Gran Turismo 3 was released when PS2 was in its first year so with a limited installed base while Sport released on a huge installed base.

Indeed.

About UK, I posted the average retail price of GTS proving that the game was selling at 1/3 of its launch price a few weeks after launch and kept selling at that price throughout 2018 (that's why you see the game popping in the chart occasionally).

A new entry in a huge franchise which is selling at 1/3 of its launch price so soon after release means only one thing: underperformance.

Numbers didn't prove anything. Being among the best-selling games of 2017 doesn't mean the game hasn't underperformed.

Retail prices speak for themselves. A successful game doesn't need a 70% price cut to sell well. Price dropped because Sony massively overshipped the game and retailers had to get rid of excess stock.

The game price was averaging £20 from December 2017 throughout 2018.

I agree, I've argued this about GT Sport before but somehow people get very defensive. Ultimately they paid the price for no single player at launch and the always online requirement.

If you can find a game sold at 1/3 of its price less than a month after its release it means only one thing: the game is underperforming,, especially if you're a big franchise like GT and under holidays.

GT is under performing. They released a game with zero content and expected people to pay full price.
GTS should always have been a budget title, like the other GT Prologue and Concept games.
The only good thing is that GTS has greatly improved since launch, with new tracks and cars added every month for free.

So, almost after year and a half, GTS probably sold around or over 5 million copies WW. That's bad? That's underperforming? Game has almost 6.5 mil. players. That's nothing, right?

The game is selling at 20 bucks in all major retailers.

Its price dropped to 20 bucks a few weeks after launch. That means only one thing: overshipping and higher expectations.

That means only that you don't know what are you talking about. So, Forza Horizon 4 got a price cuts to 25 GBP at many UK retailers just few weeks after launch ( around similar time-frame like GTS ). FH4 did bad? Of course not, also, neither GTS. As player counts number speaks for itself

Yes, that game also underperformed according to initial expectations.

It seems you never worked in retailing and you don't know how prices are set.

Why the constant need to try and paint GT Sport as a failure?
That was an age where racing games sold far more in the US and Japan. In fact GT3 worldwide was 'the most successful software launch ever with first day sales surpassing those of any other game in history' .

However this has nothing to do with you trying to paint GT Sport as a bomb even specifically mentioning the UK. You said that it 'hurt sony'. It didn't because everyone already knows racing games don't sell like they did in 2001 worldwide anymore most of all Sony. This is a UK sales thread it sold more than some previous entries there. It sold more than GT6 worldwide which had a higher PS3 install base and it had triple the sales of Forza 7. GT sport isn't hurting anyone it is selling as good a racing sim does these days and even more than the install base differences. It's selling more than some previous games in the series. It's doing well.

Yes, that game also underperformed according to initial expectations.

It seems you never worked in retailing and you don't know how prices are set.

But it seems you don't understand what means when some games underperformed. Neither are FH4 and GTS. Anyway, why bother with unreasonable members.
