Metroid Prime 4 - Game delayed, development completely restarted, Retro Studios now working on it

Makes me kinda scared what the holiday game will be this year. Nothing I see interests me other than the mech game and fire emblem, smt.

I find it refreshing that Nintendo was actually this upfront with what is going on with the development instead of just keeping quiet and announcing it is delayed and say nothing else ala 'Reggie speak'. Only thing that could have made it better is announcing the Trilogy being remastered for the Switch...

This is actually great news, even If comes 3-4 years later i actually trust Retro Studios to make this game excellent

Yep. *looks at backlog* I have plenty of games to keep me occupied and it makes me reassured to know that this game will be done right. I'm not so concerned with the timeline, just knowing that I will be able to play another game in this wonderful franchise makes me happy.

A medal for the idea of rereleasing another game on Switch? That's what Nintendo has been doing for a full year...

When it relates to some of the best games of all time I am good with this. Really good with it. Yeah, they are on Wii and Gamecube, but having it available as a hand held on a current system is huge for me. Especially if they spend some time to properly remaster it for today's displays with optional controls. "OH YEAH" [/Kool-aid Man]

My purchase of a switch just got pushed back significantly.
My purchase of a Switch just got pushed back indefinitely.

And seriously, what the fuck has Retro been doing for the past five years? Still no announcement on their next game, and then they get moved over to Prime 4. Switch has fairly nice hardware and all, but it is SEVERELY lacking in first party games (that are not Wii U ports or in the case of Splatoon, incremental version 1.5 type installments). Yet people praise the Switch up and down to high heaven, but shit on the Wii U, which ended up with a pretty great library of exclusives, as complete trash. I disagree.

This is great news. It was worryin that we never saw anything of this game after that logo announcement. Now the game is where it should be, in the hands of Retro Studios. Sure, there might not be that many original workers left there from the Prime days, but Retro has still not put out a bad game, so I'm very hopeful. Unless they mess up and this game gets totally cancelled :D (I wonder what happened to Retro's projects after Tropical Freeze....)

The Switch seems a lot like the Wii in that they are selling tonnes of them but it just feels like the software is lacking..

I sold my Wii after 6 months and bought a 360 and never looked back....I feel liked I'd end up doing the same with Switch..

I mean unless you want a portable indie machine I don't see a good reason to buy a Switch...not for the price it sells at.. and the price of games...

Wow !! I bought a switch for Metroid prime 4, I love the system so I don’t feel too let down.

I think the honesty from Nintendo is admirable but let’s be honest, Metroid prime 4 is probably 3 years away and the main version of the game will more than likely be on the Switch 2.

"And how are going to fill up the empty space we now have in our release schedule?.... more overpriced ports of course!!!!"

For the game itself it's definitely good though. I'd rather wait another 3-4 years for a Retro quality Prime game than getting a bad one

Still looking forward to DeamonXMachina, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Bayonetta 3 and Shin Megami Tensei V.
But owning a Switch has definitely been a reminder of a lesson I though I learned with the Ps4 but I clearly didn't. Buying console during the first 2-3 years isn't worth it.

By the time my most anticipated games are out (Bayonetta 3, SMT V and Prime 4) there's probably going to be a nicer, faster and maybe even cheaper Switch than the one I won

MP4 wasn't realistically going to release this year. Pokémon will be the main holiday game, maybe we'll see Luigi's Mansion 3 or Animal Crossing, maybe.

Disappointed they couldn't figure it out with a new team - I was really hoping 'Prime 4' was a red herring and we got something genuinely new along the lines of the BotW philosophy of going back to the drawing board. It's still possible, but I fear we're getting exactly what we'd imagine a Prime 4 would be with Retro: a fun game with a convoluted story stuck in an inconsequential timeline.

Goodbye SA-X, welcome back Sylux. Ugh.

While it's appreciated that they're being upfront about this, I cannot believe how terribly they've mismanaged one of their most anticipated games.

We have no idea why they decided to scrap it. No need to tag your hyperbole onto this.

So what's out this year for Switch? I've not bought a new game since Mario Odyssey (except for a couple of indies I already owned on PC).

I don't regret my purchase. Zelda and Mario were both amazing games, but that's...it.

Yeah, the games are available on GameCube and Wii, so if it is a big deal, you can get it right now. Nintendo probably loses two more new games through this recent development (Retro Studio's current project and the first version of Metroid Prime 4), even more old stuff will not make up for that in my eyes. If I want to play Metroid Prime 1-3 I have ample opportunities to do that.

But not if the timing was right. My hope is that Retro has finished work on their other title.

Besides, this is the best opportunity Retro has at regaining the momentum they once had. They're at their best when given a Nintendo title to work on as opposed to whatever it was they tried to do without Nintendo's guidance.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
I hope it works this time.

Because there was something fishy going on at Retro as well, it wasn't just this internal team.

As far as we know, DKCR and DKCTF were what they decided to make and they were brilliant.

They literally said development of the game wasn't up to their standards. They created an entirely new team solely to develop this game, then had to completely scrap it and give it to the original developers a year and a half later. It's not hyperbolic to call that mismanaged.

Well those aren't games that appeal to me personally...the fact that I don't really like Japansese games outside of mainline Mario and Zelda probably isn't helping things. But even still things like the price on the hardware and games is bit much for even more western-focused gamers like myself. For instance the 3DS XL is like $220 here in Canada.....what? Doom for switch like $80 and inferior to the other versions...things like this makes it hard to justify buying into that ecosystem..

The idea of buying it as a indie machine to play in bed before I go to sleep is the only reason I'd want one haha....but a Switch costs $380 here in Canada so it's hard to justify right now..

There's too many options to count. Your best bet is to just DuckDuckGo it. Obviously, you skipped Smash Bros, so no need in recommending that. There's Diablo, Dark Souls, Civ 6... Tales of Vesperia Remastered. I'm about to cancel my FFX/X-2 preorder so I can try to import a cart that actually provides both titles (as opposed to a lame ass one-time use download voucher). I also have a preorder for Dragon's Dogma. The rest of this year is looking pretty good even without MP4. Anticipating Pokemon and Luigi's Mansion 3. Fire Emblem this year. Yoshi's Tax-evading World. I think this year is going to be even better for 3rd party support.

I don't even bother trying to keep tabs on the new releases. It's just endless noise. What I really want is for Dragon Quest Builders to fuggin' come down in price finally. I want THAT on Switch, but it's $15 on PS4...

Disappointing to say the least. But, if the game wasn´t up to standards it´s better to can it and go back to square one, even it means another 3-4 years of development. Outsourcing doesn´t seem to pay off that much. Konami trashed Silent Hill with Homecoming and Downpour, Square Enix restarted development on Final Fantasy VII when Cyberconnect mishandled it and now MP 4 does the same. Well, hopefully this means MP Trilogy Remaster for Switch as a way to lick the wounds.

Unfortunate. On the bright side, this gives me a newfound confidence that the final product will be great. The fact that they seemingly care enough about quality to drop everything and call up Retro studios hopefully means that really want this game to be great. I thought it was fishy when they never announced who was developing it, and evidently that suspicion was right, but at least Retro is working on it now.

I just wish they would announce Prime Trilogy for the Switch. Those games are too good for their last release to be on the WiiU eshop.

I am pretty sure I am not the only one who has bought Metroid Prime 1-3. But if I am, maybe I should start selling tickets for people to play it at my home.

EDIT: Upon checking, you can get all three together around 60€ for Wii (which sold 100 million times) on ebay, both US or PAL. Too bad, no good business opportunity for me here :(.

Let's get real though this isn't an EA Star Wars situation. They tried something, it failed, they pulled the plug. Seems like a shrewd decision and likely the right call. Obvious mismanagement would have been trying to keep making the project work and seeing this video 3 years from now.

It's possible that hitting the reset button was mismanagement on Nintendo or part, but it's far more likely the devs couldn't deliver.

If yoy want to talk about brand mis-management, I don't think this move hurts the little goodwill the Metroid fanbase has already consequently - certainly less so than putting out a game called Prime 4 that misses the mark.

This is excellent news. I don’t know how some of you were actually initially excited for this without the original developers.

Do you think just any random team could have made a game a game changing game like Metroid prime?

Seems that Nintendo has mismanaged this Franchise as a whole lately.

Other M, Federations and now swapping Dveelopers for an anticipated game.

Lord knows how other sites will take this news.

First point is valid, and I hate that there's a premium price to pay for that portability. It's become annoying when $15 titles for PS4 are still riding along at full price on Switch more than a year after release.

Second point, I think you would understand better once you're playing on Switch. The true power is realized when you're holding these games in your hands. PS4 and Xbox just can't reach that level of potential in their current form factor. So what if Doom doesn't run at 1080p 60 fps. You're freaking playing Doom in your hands and it looks quite good on that 720p screen. Fast. Fluid. When you realize all of your favorite Switch games can be played anywhere and anytime, that is value unparalleled.

It's fine to have a set of genres that you only buy on Switch, etc.

Metro reporting that a lot of Retro's staff left to work on other projects including ReCore. Also sadly that their senior engineer passed away in 2008.

With other reports that Retro's recent ideas haven't really up to scratch, I think we have to take the news with a pinch of salt.

What are Nintendo team behind Mario and Zelda up to? I know an FPS is very different but why not use them?

I feel Nintendo never begun development for MP4 (besides the lame logo teaser) because they couldn't come to an agreement with Rare and now they finally did. I think it was all smoke and mirrors since they got so pressured by the fanbase.

Fair point but them hiring retro and starting over is a step in the right direction.

Plus Samus returns remake was very good.

Yeah I have held a Switch for a little bit and actually my issues were less the screen and more of the layout/ergonomics of the Joycons...

I probably will eventually get one but probably not until they release a newer version.

I like that Nintendo put a video like this instead of trying to let the hype die.
But also, Nintendo wasn’t too kind to announce game early, I don’t think this will help.

I'd be interested to see some materials from the original concept, since presumably Nintendo found it impressive enough to announce the game.

Otherwise, assuming this reboot will require a full development cycle, I hope whatever they're now making is targeted at Nintendo's follow-up to the Switch, as opposed to a late-gen Switch or cross-gen title.

But I'm happy I bought 2 Switches in 2017, and I hope to be trading mine in for the revision when it arrives.

Didn't key staff who worked on the original MP games leave to form Armature Studio a long time ago? And judging by their inability to come up with anything all these years after Tropical Freeze, I'm not having high hopes for this. Could even end up cancelled. :(

Holy fucking shit! Well I guess I don't have to pick up a switch this year lol. Doubt Bay bay 3 will make it this year either so.

HA, I stuck up for bandai saying they could do it too.

Mixed feelings about this:
- kudos to Nintendo for being so honest and upfront about the situation. That took guts
- on the other hand, wow, what a fuck up! This shows why it's a bad idea to announce your game when all you have is a logo

Sure Nintendo will release a port of the Prime trilogy in the meantime, right?

Well, at least the leaked footage of this abandoned build will make for a good DF Retro episode in 2040.

How is the online performance of smash? Justified by the price?

I hate to imagine how much of a disaster the game was that they had to scrap it completely, but it must have been something that would seriously upset Metroid fans. Scrapping a games entire development is not something that is taken lightly. After the low quality and backlash towards Federation Force Nintendo must be very worried and they should be. A repeat of that could kill the Metroid franchise for good and there are plenty of disgruntled fans circling and waiting to lash out if Metroid Prime 4 does not meet expectations.

Multiple studios can work on a title in concert, if Nintendo wants that. I suspect Armature could use the work.

It's certainly not Iwata's Nintendo anymore. If they're not openly talking about certain games, it's because they're more than 3-6 months out usually.

I preferred when Nintendo showcased the games for the upcoming year rather than waiting until E3 to show games for the second half of the year.
