[N-Direct] The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening Trailer

We usually get two Zeldas per console:

NES: Legend of Zelda, Zelda 2
SNES: Link to the Past
GBC: Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages
N64: Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask
GBA: Minish Cap
NGC: Four Swords, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess
DS: Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks
WII: Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword
3DS: Link Between Worlds, Tri-Force Heroes
Wii U: Breath of the Wild
Switch: Breath of the Wild

Only one Zelda game on SNES and GBA. List also doesn't include remakes, so the Ocarina/Majora/BS Zelda not counted, nor the HD ports of Wind Waker/Twilight Princess or the upgraded ports of Link's Awakening/Link to the Past.

Link's Awakening remake looks far more substantial than any of the other remakes. I'm curious why they actually bothered to remake it rather than make a remake/sequel like they did with Link Between Worlds.
Fixed for accuracy. Ignoring the originally intended ports (that ultimately launched on said systems) is a disservice to the franchise imo regardless of which is the superior port. So that technically means the GameCube saw the most original Zelda titles while the 3ds has the most Zelda games available.

If this is just a side project and we see another main Zelda two years from now for switch I certainly wouldn’t be displeased.

The game looks incredible, I'm so pumped to play this. Link's Awakening is my favorite Zelda game and it looks like they've definitely done it justice from what I can see in this clip. For those of you complaining about the art style, just be glad I wasn't in charge of the remake because I would have had it look exactly like the old Japanese commercials for Link's Awakening.

I can’t believe most people have problem with the artstyle. I personally LOVING the visuals, it looks sooooo good.

Link's Awakening is my second favorite Zelda title and I am so excited for this game. Looks fantastic and I love the art direction. It kinda makes sense given the context of its story as well.

The moment I saw those waves I knew it, at last one of my fav Zelda games was getting a remake (was hoping for Zelda II first tho).
Then I got a little disappointed with the style they chose, and that's the first time I feel like that with a Zelda game, it looks like plastic toys reminds me of the new Yoshi upcoming, it's not like the 3DS games there it looks just colorful.
I'll love it eventually though as a Zelda minion follower as I am.

I think most people would consider Twilight Princess to be a Wii game and Breath of the Wild a Switch game. I'm not even sure what the point of contesting that is.

A damn shame Nintendo didn't shoot for the art style of the 90's promotional artwork.

Still buying this day one, I hope it's not $60.
The cinematic at the beginning of the trailer had me hoping for this. I still like the style we got though.

It’s hard to overstate how excited I am about this. I recently completed Zelda LttP on Super NES Mini, and seeing how well it still played today, I was hoping thay some of the 2D Zeldas would return.

Never did I expect a full blown modern remake this year.

And the art style... man, the art style!

Beautiful art style. Day 1.

The most exciting, bold new art style since Wind Waker! I absolutely love how it looks like a toy world, from the clay / plastic look to the tilt shift camera. If Octopath Traveller was a pop out book, this is a play set.

This one's more in line with A link between worlds, right?

Because I played that and BOTW last year and while BOTW had it's charm for sure, ALBW was one of the best games I have played in my life. BOTW was just too big for it's own good. ALBW was simply perfect with it's 20-30 hours playtime.

Best Zelda, baby. This thing looks neat as hell, not even a question about picking it up.

Yep, Link's Awakening is actually shorter all-in-all, but it's a fantastic, tight, contained little experience.

I would've liked it

If you like Zelda, you'd already have a Switch because Breath of the Wild is the best Zelda game ever made (and I don't say that lightly).
It's also a Wii U game. Also it is the worst 3D Zelda game ever made except for the incomplete and empty Wind Waker (and I don't say that lightly).

I like the art style. The simple models + nice lighting + tilt shift camera look really nice + charming. This is how Secret of Mana remake should’ve looked.

I agree. I like, but don’t love the art style. With that said, it is immeasurably better than the Secret of Mana remake

Link's Awakening is one of my favorite games of all time, Switch definitely got a bit more interesting for me with this announcement. However, I'll wait and see what the new Pokémon looks like before I pull the trigger.

This was my first RPG ever on the gameboy. Played this a lot. Don't like much the art style for the intro, but the in game looks amazing!

I don't like the visuals but I'll give it a shot as it's a great game. Probably not at full price though.

When they showed gameplay, I instantly knew this would be a divisive artstyle. I was a bit taken back at first, but the style is growing on me fast. I'm a Zelda nut too, so there's no way I'll ever skip a Zelda game.

i LOVE Zelda, but i already played BOTW on the Wii u and yes it's the best zelda game ever made, Zelda is the only game i would buy an entire console for it, Link's awakening won't be available for the wii u so i'm gonna buy a Switch once it comes out.

even though BOTW was legendary, i still want traditional Zelda games.

Besides Tetris it was definitely the best GameBoy title ever but I don't understand why so many people hold it in higher regard than A Link to the Past (which is just perfection in my opinion).

That was a great announcement, the animation on the beginning of the trailer killed it. For a second I thought that they would use a Windwaker HD art style, but they went in a totally different way, it resembles the A Link Between Worlds for 3DS. But it looks very nice.

I just hope that people don't hate the game just because of the unique art style, like it happened with Windwaker back on the day it was announced.

It’s is a contraction of “it is” or “it has.” Its is a possessive determiner we use to say that something belongs to or refers to something.

Will be interesting to see how the zoomed-out camera will handle different "zones" with completely different tile sets, which were fine in GB version since it was a fixed screen position.

Also not a fan of how dungeons are cropped out on the sides

Really looking forward to this, and the fact that with more buttons, I certainly should not have to hit the menu as much to change items like the original. I actually think it's a big deal how much smoother the intent of the original game will be realized with more active item buttons.

The sometimes constant switching of items was literally my only complaint back in 93 after having so many functions independently mapped in LttP. (Lifting, dashing, etc)

I think the problem is, to a lot of people it looks like some generic Unity engine game. It reminds me of Oceanhorn, that Zelda knockoff from a few years ago, the way the movement and physics are, it's just something about that engine that looks and feels... cheap.

Hey, I don't want to hear this crap from someone who liked Skyward Sword. :messenger_pouting:

In all seriousness, though, is there any Zelda game since OoT that every Zelda fan agrees is a "good direction for the franchise"?

I think this game will be a much-needed injection of simplicity back into the franchise, not to mention that it is clearly aimed towards kids just like the original Link's Awakening was. Personally, I love the art style (reminiscent of 3D Dot Game Heroes) and I love the absolutely slavish dedication to echoing the original feel and simplicity and design.

Ocarina of Time is not uncontested, I have seen several people who were very dissatisfied after ALttP with OoT. But, personally, I have been pretty happy with Zelda developments in most cases. Zelda 2 and Zelda BotW are the only ones where I think the general direction was bad; Zelda TWW just sucked in its execution, but it followed a good formula and had a fantastic art style and atmosphere.

True, I don't like OoT myself.

I'm on the opposite end of the scale compared to you, though: I have been pretty bored with Zelda developments in most cases. There are only a handful Zelda titles I've truly fallen in love with (Zelda 2 and BotW being two of them, ironically).

Am I the only one who wanted it on the 3DS instead since that's the system everyone was expecting it to be on? I thought the 3D effects for A Link Between Worlds were nice.

Oh well I don't see what the problem is because it looks great!

and they said there was no Smash Bros. news

I've only watched the trailer twice, I don't have a super strong opinion on the art direction. I kind of like it but, kind of don't like it? I'll need to see more footage to determine. But gameplay wise it looks solid!

Oh hell yes, the first 2D Zelda I ever played back on my old game boy color. Can't wait to meet all the colourful characters again and explore the weird dungeons in 3D.

I wonder if they'll include the color dungeon in the graveyard from DX with the red / blue tunic, or mix it up with something new for the Switch like a docked / portable dungeon instead.

This will be the real top-tier Switch Zelda :messenger_weary::messenger_ok:

I were exited when I saw the headline. But then :( damn stupid childish graphics, lost all interest to getting it :(

this style makes it look like generic unity game

I don't like the poor 3D graphics.
If they are planning an accurate panel-by-panel remake, they should:
  1. use well drawn and animated HD sprites.
  2. use well made 3d Graphics, at least accurate to the original's cut-scenes.
Otherwise, they should just restructure the whole thing!
This looks more like a Parody than a remake...

Enough with the blatant, childish console warring.
The animated intro was cool but the game itself looks like some cheap Chinese mobile trash. No surprise the Nintards are eating it up like hotcakes. It is indeed one of the more popular games in the series and has one of the most twisted hardcore fanbases. And yes I have proof:

It's always funny to see the dichotomy of the Zelda fanbase. This looks awesome to me. WW is my favorite Zelda followed by LttP. I'm not one of the people who loses my shit everytime they make a cute version of Zelda.

I hope you don't expect anyone to take you seriously. "Nintards" ??? Are you five? :messenger_grinning_sweat:
