Sony learned from their mistakes and look at them now, ran over the competition. By the end of the generation at least PS3 caught up with the xbox360. We are nearing a new generation and people are crying how SONY is "lazy, corporate, not taking it seriously". They are about to release a new console next year and have sold more than TWICE of what MS did this time. What is MS going to do, release the dead on arrival Crackdown 3, a new Gears game nobody is excited about. SONY is concentrating on the next generation. And I think its nice from a higher up to admit a mistake rather than back in the day when they tried to convince you your PS3 can cure cancer and the US military is using them for high processing intel missions.

The only counter argument people have is that they are evil because no crossplay and no BC. Crossplay sounds like a good idea but as much as I have friends I never ran into a situation where a game comes out and we say, "damn i wish i could play this with you but i got a different system". Maybe one person. So I don't get why people are making a big deal out of it, unless you want to convince yourself that you have so many friends out there and theres no other way of playing unless its cross-play. They made cross-play with some 360 shooters and PC and nobody gave a shit. Now its some kind of issue but you never asked for it before.

Being in a coma was what saved Sony this generation. If you remember, it was Microsoft that screwed up and all Sony did was "not do what they did".

Perhaps but I think that oversimplifies things somewhat both with regard to just how well Sony has done this generation and that Microsoft has never won a generation no matter how it started.

In a way, it answers its own question. How could Sony have been sleepwalking this generation given its software output and also given the diminished competition from Microsoft? Sleepwalking would have been content just coasting along, not releasing the stellar games they have. If anything, they had an excuse to be complacent and they haven’t used it imo.

Well winning and losing is a bit subjective to an extent. Do you think MS's console is losing? What about the Switch? Is there only one winner?

I'm not trying to make excuses or sideskirt the reality of this gens console sales, but in a world that has seen the Oujya or whatever it was called, and the steam machine... It's kinda hard to really call MS, Sony, or Nintendo a loser.

Sega, 3DO, TurboGFX16, Atari, etc... There are tons of examples of console manufacturers that truly lost. The big three left could be considered winners.

I am with you. I own all the consoles, I will buy games that look fun to me - however sometimes you need to criticize the bad moves that a certain console/publisher/developer make. If they can improve, they provide better games, services, and give others a reason to improve as well. Whether it was the lack of games on Nintendo's Wii U, the complete fuckery that was Xbox One's DRM-focused reveal, or Sony's recent moves with censorship and crossplay problems - these aren't things that should be waved off as "fanboys whining". These are things that needed to be criticized.

Yeah I'm not sure why "Units sold" was ever a measure of success if it didn't correlate positively with revenue. That said, all three are doing really well financially for the first time and I'm at a loss as to why fanboys still exist.

Take import cars for example: Nissan, Honda, and Toyota enthusiasts celebrate each other's cars instead of hope their competition is stomped into the ground or discount each other's brand preferences. I don't know a Mercedes fan that wouldn't admit the BMW M3 is a great car.

But in gaming - it's all a territorial defensive pissing contest. I guess people need something to believe in, but it's amazing the holywar that was SNES vs Genesis on the playgrounds of elementary school turned into the year 2019 when everyone is in their 30s and still arguing about who has the better electronic appliance. Baffles me, and it says a lot about the gamer population.

I'm not a fan of Sony's brand of gaming but I hope they continue to thrive and push the envelope after learning from their mistakes because if they win, we all win.

Finishing 3rd in a race still gets you a bronze medal and some prize money. But I am sure that racer would be happier if they had finished first. I believe this topic was started because the Sony official stated specifically that the PS3 was a moment of hubris. For me personally, I’m cautiously optimistic that Sony acknowledges the PS4 was successful because they listened to developers and gamers. Hopefully the next generation will continue with that attitude.

That's why I own all the consoles. For the exclusives. But on PC I can mod my games, don't need to pay to play online, multiplat games look better, 99% backwards compatibility, and tons of games that aren't on console.

If Sony decided to censored some underage schoolgirl anime tites on games consider it as a wake up call since most parents in the US and all around the world aren't up to date with technology and are aware of these malicious content in videogame

So if somebody decided to step up and do a job for them at censoring innaproriate content in videogames I'll welcomed them with open arms

If these games actually had underage school girls doing things sexually, they wouldn’t pass CERO, PEGI or ESRB.

I mean one VR game gets rid of head patting, why? It’s silly, DOA Extreme Scarlet doesn’t even have underage females yet it’s PS4 version is altered and different from the unaltered Switch port.

Why was Super Seducer banned, yet something like Dream Daddy green lighted? Lol neither has anything to do with “omg underage school girl”

Sony has done an amazing job.

Shame about their censorship. I expected better from them, specially given they are Japanese and don't seem as affected from the PC wave.

Still, at least for me it's no reason enough to stay away from their products. I play multiplats on computer anyway.

Sadly Sony moved their HQ to the PC haven that is California and now require japanese developers to respond to them in English.

I never did. I simply stated it is the PC Haven - the majority of PC folks reside in California. Not that everyone in California are PC.

No one's immune, but I can only go by what he just mentioned, and he literally addressed the problems specifically. If after all this talk they go and do the exact opposite, then they're either completely stupid or deliberately devilish. So I'm going to give them the benefit here and believe them since he was very honest about the mistake and how they turned it around.

That's why I own all the consoles. For the exclusives. But on PC I can mod my games, don't need to pay to play online, multiplat games look better, 99% backwards compatibility, and tons of games that aren't on console.

Layden just literally addressed and described the PS3 issue. Why would they be stupid enough to sleepwalk into it again?

And why he said that ? Also there are plenty of thing he forgot.

- He forgot that Sony expected games to just magically pop up on PS3 regardless of what they do. The same thing happens now.
- They forgot to invest in their own studios because they though exclusives will just appear. Meanwhile now they focused their resources on few studios which all make similar games 3rd person actions games. Polyphony is shadow of itself and no longer can sell consoles like it used to and cosnidering their past releases and amount of time it takes it id doubtful they will release their next game by the time ps5 will hit end of its life, Ueda left Sony. They shut down London, they shut down evolution which basically along with Isomniac was the reason PS3 didn't end up with 20mln ltd sales.
- They forgot how to be pro-consumer when they announced their console and it didn't feature any of xbox features like achievements, voice chat and so on (remember all of those were added abouer 2-3 years after launch). When Xbox put them to heat they also suddenly found reason to feature indie games on their big stage on E3 because they needed more games and last E3 they barely gave space to any indie. PS+ which was huge boon for PS3 now is a fucking joke compared to Gamepass from Xbox.
- They actively don't want for games to be cross playable, In era where F2P games can gather 100mln people to be not cross playable means your console will not be bought because people want to play together not choose and pick consoles to play.
- They don't even talk about next gen console when Xbox division outright said they are working on one. Which means they want to milk PS4 sales as much as they can and probably don't want to be first on market due to this reason.

Yes they have a lot of hubris, they are currently sitting on high horse thinking they have in bank PS5 release and think that just because PS4 is a success PS5 will be guaranteed leader too. Just like in PS2 days.

Let us rewind time for a second because some people also seem to forget how PS4 came to be as leader:
- WiiU failed.
- Xbox tried to do this garbage TV stuff and like PS2 sony they were high on their farts thinking people will just buy xboxone because xbox sold well and "all those people are locked up in xbox live service with their friends either way". They released their console later and made it more expensive as it came with kinect and tv capability. IT was a fucking mess.

And now let us compare it to now:
- Switch is a success. And they are yet to even release their strongest weapon "Pokemons" (no "let's go xxx" is not main pokemon), by the time PS5 will be released Switch will be hitting its best years and people will have to make a choice: buy this console with a lot of great games of this new console with nothing to play for months ?
- Xbox isn't headed by pencil pusher anymore and it is clear that whatever they will release it will be gaming console probably in multiple variants from cheap to expensive. Gamepass is like lightyears better thing than PS+. And all sources say that next Xbox console will not be console in fact. It will be service that will work on shitload of machines while they will be still selling consoles. So PC+mobilestreaming+console that will be next xbox. Rumor also goes all previous xbox consoles will be forward compatible much like PC is. So they won't start with 0 but with whatever xbox one sales are + pc xbox live service people. Minecraft ? Anyone heard of that ? Do you think what will happen if they announce Minecraft 2 as xbox life service exclusive ? Over past 2 years they bought/created shitload of studios.
- PC. Many people even here have PC and PS4 because they want to cover most of their bases when it comes to playing the most amount of games. But do you know what happened in recent years ? Almost every single game is released on PC. Right now only Atlus is missing but there are rumors it has in plans to start releasing games on PC. Not only now you can play all Xbox exclusives with PC but almost all PS4 "exclusives" are playable on PC. I sold my PS4 when i finished Bloodborne and since i don't like that much 3rd person actions games in vein of uncharted i basically had no reason to hold PS4 anymore. For PS4 i had to buy it on this gen start but PS5 ? I don't see a reason anymore.

So yeah they are sleepwalking into another PS3 situation. Just like they were high on PS2 just like MS was high on Xbox, just like Nintendo was high on Wii they all thought that people are taken for granted and their services/games/whatever will just translate old consoles into new consoles.

For PS5 to be successful they have to:
- make absolute bangers and huge amount of them, good luck with that. Switch is showing how to do it but Sony doesn't have that much great IPs people would rave about. While they have a lot of exclusives on PS4 most of therm are third party and they can't rely on them for PS5.
- completely remove barriers from playing games. Crossplay and lack of paid online PS+ should be transformed into their own gamepass.
- playstation service like rumored Xbox service. If you want to play playstation on PC play it, stream on mobile ? do it. Buy very cheap 150$ ps5 ? do it.
- have every single competitor slip up like they did on this gen start.
