PlayStation Boss Teases PS5 Will Have More Multiplayer Exclusives Than PS4

By and large, Sony Interactive Entertainment has strayed away from making multiplayer games, especially this generation. And when it has ventured into that space -- with games like Drawn to Death -- it has failed.

The defining feature of Sony's first-party output this generation has been narrative-driven, single-player games. And in this space, it has been king. Between the likes of God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man, Bloodborne, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Uncharted 4: A Thieft's End, Sony has put out some of the best single-player games this generation, while many publishers move more and more towards the online and multiplayer spaces.
That said, while Sony has committed on multiple occasions to making more narrative-driven single-player games in the future, it may also be looking to try and carve out a piece of the lucrative multiplayer pie for itself.

Speaking to Business Insider, PlayStation boss Shawn Layden at one point found himself talking about multiplayer games and spilling some interesting, teasing tidbits about the future of PlayStation.
"Couch co-op — I mean that's a whole category I think the industry needs to look back at," said Layden. "We have that with sports titles, and some racing titles, but not with much else. And I think that speaks to the power of the Internet on the one hand, but otherwise we might wanna revisit that to get more family engagement in the gaming experience."

"But, no, I was referencing more with the things like 'GTA 5 Online,' or you look at 'Call of Duty,' or 'Fortnite,' or any of those experiences," added Layden, clarifying a previous talking point earlier in the interview. "Worldwide Studios, like I say, we've been going really heavy into story-driven gaming."
The power of the narrative. Big, spectacular experiences. But not a whole lot in the multiplayer side of things, I think. That's an area where you will likely see us start to make more noise in the new term." As you can see, Layden keeps things a little vague, but from the sounds of it, PlayStation may soon be making some noise in the multiplayer space, possibly as soon as the start of next-gen. I for one wouldn't mind seeing a PlayStation-themed battle royale game where the likes of Nathan Drake, Crash Bandicoot, Kratos, and others all drop onto an island in a fight to the death. And I know I can't be the only one who would buy such a game.

Sony may be the big cheese this gen, but even they notice that there's still a large market they haven't been reaching into much this gen and that's the multiplayer market. I agree with the writer and Layden that it's an improvement I'd like to see for PS5. I know many people that have stayed on PC or brought an Xbox due to Sony's lopsidedness toward cinematic SP games.

Which of course, many have been great games so I'm not saying they should stop that, but I think that if the PS4 had gotten more of say, Xboxs multiplayer marketshare as I would say 80% of Xbox games seemed to have focused on MP even some of the ones with decent single-player campaigns, the PS4 may have actually ended up beating the PS2 in sales.

If Sony can pull off a balance between MP and SP next generation in first-party output, I could see big things in the future for PlayStation.

Yeah, they should branch a lot harder in to multiplayer exclusives. Build that online community for playstation a bit more.

They need to resurrect the Twisted Metal franchise for online play.

Last of Us Part II's multiplayer needs to be advertised because Part I's multiplayer was really good.

It's not what I want to hear after saying they're going to be going for quality over quantity. That rules out multiplayer games actually 'increasing' their productivity, which leads inevitably to the conclusion less singleplayer games.

For me personally this is great news. I love multiplayer gaming, specifically local/couch co-op. Single player games are great also but I can happily just play one or two a year and PlayStation has been lacking in the multiplayer games this generation.

so, they will only improve their portfolio. how can Xbox Studios catch up if Sony WWS doesn't stand still. Media is lying to me. Damn

Get the MP exclusives from MS and the PC Market and then say they won't offer cross-play.

I see your cunning plans Sony but please commit to the Single Player games too!

They need to bring in the multiplayer exclusives cause they know Microsoft checkmated them hard with their crossplay PR blitz. People will no longer default to the Playstation version because it has the most active online community.

If they can do something different I’m cool with it.

But I’d rather they not try to compete in the multiplayer space. I don’t think they stand a chance against the big 3rd party games honestly.

It depends. As long as they’re not bandwagon chasing and arriving 5 years late like ms does. It worked out poorly for killzone etc

I think this is a mixed issue. One of the genres Sony would have to get going good to really improve their MP platform is a First-party FPS game and they have not been able to find a way to get that working in their favor at all since 2004.

There’s still room for a silky smooth, super polished 3rd person BR Sony. How about adapting Last Of Us Multi? The scavenging is already there, as is the gameplay.

Twisted Metal Battle Royal let's go

I'd be really up for this. Twisted Metal would be perfect for a BR game and car combat is something we haven't seen in the BR space.

I'd also go for another Warhawk but using the Killzone art style. I was never a huge fan of the Killzone franchise but the art style was fantastic. Match that art style with the gameplay of Warhawk and I'd be very happy.

I think they should just cancel everything they have in the pipeline and go all out on making Knack multiplayer and battle royale.

I doubt we will see an FPS. Socom id imagine is bound for a comeback tho.

Why doubting fps ? It's the easiest and most common multiplayer genre of all I think

Can't imagine Resistance graphics on nextgen PS5 gona be sick

Because IT IS the most common. And there are plenty of developers and publishers out there that will most likely outclass anything Sony puts out. Too competitive of a market and too risky.

They tried it with resistance and killzone and both are dead. Halo is barely a thing itself anymore.

I want to say part of the reason PS4 is so successful is that they chased genres and publishing deals to add variety, often niche... the same strategy should be used for multiplayer. (I’m gonna ignore the 5 souls clones that were exclusive tho lol).

You can’t just me too it like ms. It didn’t work out.

MP doesn't have to mean first person or third person shooters. Look at something like Rocket League. That's a highly successful MP game that features local MP as well. That's the kind of unique MP experience that Sony should be looking to bring to the platform as an exclusive not COD and Battlefield clones.

Not to show my ignorance, but does the PS4 have any multiplayer exclusives? I don't really look at things like Bloodborne or Last of Us as 'multiplayer games' really, just games with a multiplayer aspect.

Third Person Shooter:
The Naughty Dog team behind its multiplayer portion of their games, should take over the SOCOM franchise. Reboot somewhere in the middle of what Uncharted multiplayer is with the tone style of The Last of Us multiplayer. They have the engine and multiplayer experience that appeals to the SOCOM fans.

MMORPG:
Since SOE broke off, no everquest or eqoa in the horizon. Just invest in a company making a good pc mmorpg and fund their console version and make it cross play.

First Person Shooter:
Give Guerrilla Games an expanded staff resource like they did with Naughty Dog, so they can continue to make FPS and other original content. Killzone 2 was amazing, but I found it hard to get comfortable with the old controller scheme. I did great when it was out but can't do it now.

MS has pledged to make more SP games and Sony has pledged to make more MP games.

What's not to like? It doesn't matter if you're sorta "biased" and you don't like what they're doing. What matters is bringing balance to their IP portfolio.

Sony got lucky this gen and got carried by 3rd party devs regarding MP titles. This wasn't the case in the previous gen (360 was the dominant platform and the preferred console for CoD etc.)

What will happen in the next gen? Will the PS5 become the dominant platform? Maybe or maybe not. Sony is already planning their strategy ahead and I applaud them for that. They're not sitting on their laurels.

They cannot risk relying on 3rd party carrying forever. Just because it worked this gen, doesn't mean it will also work in the next gen as well.

I agree that their FPS games (Killzone, Resistance) weren't very successful, but what about their flagship TPS titles (Uncharted, TLOU)?

They can make great things with them if they want to. :) Uncharted 4 MP and TLOU1 MP didn't have a big PR/advertising budget and it shows.

Bring back the good ol' days of Sony:

ND has proven they don't understand TPS mechancis enough to actually make a solid long-term TPS.

Killzone had 5 games, 4 by the same dev, to figure out FPS and got WORSE overtime. (arguably)

Please elaborate?

Their TPS mechanics are solid, especially at 60 fps. Have you played UC4 MP?

Unfortunately it's their netcode implementation that leaves a lot to be desired... they can fix that with a few necessary tweaks or even better by adopting dedicated servers (major F2P games like Fortnite/Apex don't use p2p).

So Killzone and Resistance might be in the cards? That would be cool. Never played them (aside from dabbling with a buddy's PS3), but these games were solid. I remember trying Killzone 3 and it was awesome. Not sure why PS gamers ditched them letting their online communities drop like a rock.

People rag on MS for shitty first party games, but the same can be said about PS. All their best games are SP Sad Dad kinds of games.

Where's all the variety from last gen...... all kinds of shooters, that PS All Stars fighting game, more racer variety like Evo games etc.....?
