The article is way too lengthy, might want to do some breakdowns since people don't bother reading most of the times.

  • Zen 2 CPU
  • Navi GPU
  • Ray-tracing
  • 3D audio chip (possibly Audiokenetic/WWise that they bought earlier in the year)
  • VR support, current HMD works with it (potentially no break out box a la RuthenicCookie leak)
  • PSVR2 might be in the works but not talking about it at the moment
  • Specialized SSD build-in to save loading time, bandwidth higher than PC SSD's, tested on Spider-Man (PS4)
  • Dev-kit in the hands of developers
  • System build with developers input a la PS4
  • Supports 8K graphics
  • Supports physical media
  • Backwards compatible with PS4 library
  • Death Stranding most likely being developed for PS5 as well
  • Some kind/form of cloud integration (more news to come in this regard)

Sound like ReRam :messenger_sunglasses:

At the moment, Sony won’t cop to exact details about the SSD—who makes it, whether it utilizes the new PCIe 4.0 standard—but Cerny claims that it has a raw bandwidth higher than any SSD available for PCs. That’s not all. “The raw read speed is important,“ Cerny says, “but so are the details of the I/O [input-output] mechanisms and the software stack that we put on top of them. I got a PlayStation 4 Pro and then I put in a SSD that cost as much as the PlayStation 4 Pro—it might be one-third faster." As opposed to 19 times faster for the next-gen console, judging from the fast-travel demo.

Yeah I need to break it down for people who can't take the time to read it right now.

On the road on my phone atm will try to high light things later this evening but thank you for your breakdown, nicely done.

Funny how so many people screamed Sonys doomed when they pulled from E3 crying about we wont hear anything from them at all in 2019.

Then Cerny says "Hold my beer"

Seriously lol all the "they have nothing to show or talk about" bs, it's like ppl don't learn. They could have easily been there to unveil some of this info and ppl would have been happy just with tht. Add some new third party games and one or two exclusives and there you have a successful E3. That's not why thy didn't go lol. It's just so funny how ppl love to assume or be fanboys when we know we've seen conferences from others with the same regurgitated ips being shown three e3s in a row with a few third party deals.

This ps5 news has me very happy.

Doesn't this just mean it'll run PS Now? I'm interested to know if they actually have any PS5 games at launch if it does. Sony's policy with that hasn't been too great, even with their own games. You can go on to Now right this instant and stare confusingly at the lack of some ancient Sony made PS4 games.

Man this upcoming gen already sounds so much more interesting than the current, at least for me reading what I just did.

I don't think so because of how it's worded, Cerny said that they are pioneers of cloud (or something along those lines) and that more news is to come in regards to their cloud plans.
So I take it it's not in the form of PS Now as that exists already and with all the streaming craze and such perhaps an evolved form of PS Now? (I honestly don't know, not a subject I'm interested in :p).

There's a lot to be excited about from this one article alone. The Spider-Man demonstration sounds impressive, the casual backwards compatibility confirmation, the ray tracing support, the advanced audio, 8K display support, the built-in SSD... It all paints a very optimistic picture.

Seriously and I'm so happy tht og psvr is compatible. Sounds like thy are ticking all the right features imo. Ray tracing, the ssd all icing and Cerny hinted to a few other surprises we don't know about. This bad boy is coming out shooting guns and taking no prisoners. Love how Sony does less talking and more showing when time is right.

This is such a fucking Sony way of doing this. Microsoft has had the press frothing at the mouth for months about next xbox, streaming, gamepass, backwards compatibility, Arrogant Sony... And then Sony sends out Cerny, on a random as fuck Tuesday in April, to have a casual fireside chat with Wired where he spills all the PS5 beans.

Never change Sony, never change.

Next fucking level troll job by Sony if you ask me. I love it.

Pretty funny shit how they do this. :messenger_tears_of_joy: Like, "Oh, by the way....."

LOL so non chalant while the others are frothing at the mouth to attract more ppl to their announcements lol Sony rarely talks but when thy do its gd info and usually comes to fruition. I can't wait!!!
When it comes to the speaking heads, so many people confuse quantity with quality. Cerny *could* spend all day blabbing on Twitter, but what's the point if we don't actual learn any new info?
Poor Voost Kain. All his threads for nothing. Or will he take it to another level come June? Stay tuned!
He'll have to ban evade first.

People just don't understand that it's not just any SSD. They are usually some form of an M2.SSD or a NVMe drive. The hard drive will look like this.

The way i read it is different. It's probably based on those technologies because you won't reinvent the wheel all the time but they added optimization for load time and streaming textures and assets.
And I think it's why they are speaking about it now, because Microsoft has no time to copy the technology or try to adapt anymore if they haven't.

But improved load time is a really good news for next gen.

Definitely and I'm glad Sony has Cerny in their corner. They aren't perfect but they learn off their mistakes and grow and bring us what we want as gamers and thts good hardware and great games (hey I liked Knack 😂😂😂😂).

Isn't Ray Tracing a performance killer?
With no dedicated unit for that... yes.
But I'm sure AMD is putting something like the RT units in Navi... so maybe it could run it way better than actual Vega.

"No PocketStation backward compatibility: are SONY and PS5 in HOT WATERS?"
He only creates threads titles with over 100 characters :D

"No PocketStation backward compatibility: are SONY and PS5 in HOT WATERS? Anti-consumer Sony practices strikes again"

There goes the notion of next gen not including a SSD drive. Like I mentioned in the past. A standard spindle hard drive is such a hindrance to overall system performance. It would be stupid to continue using it going forward.

Yes and no, imo, everything is a cost vs performance balance.

Do you want a fast boat or do you want a luxury boat with 4 rooms, chances are you're not getting both... especially at normal consumer pricing levels.

This gen should be about going big or go home as we approach the end of Moore's Law, so even if its more expensive... this gen is going to be around for a very long time. (I kind of agree with you)

This article has nothing to do with cost. Why are you even comparing cost when we have no additional details on what this console is going to be priced at?

I remember reading that hybrid hard disks had a software solution that automatically stored the most commonly used data on the SSD partition, to improve overall performance. This stock SSD could be a part of this. Like you have an M.2 SSD in the mobo, that uses this software technology and a normal platter hard disk for storage and get better performance over time and better OS performance since the firmware and all that is in the SSD.

ohh boy, this is getting me all kinds all hyped.

Because you said, "It would be stupid to continue using it going forward. "

You made an opinion and all those opinions at the end have to have a pricing component. Let's move to advance tech, but if the tech is $10,000 a unit, its probably a no go... the pricing still have to be reasonable... although I generally agree with you - go big or go home this gen.

My whole post was about overall system performance....Not how well the console is going to perform on the market...

Well, when you say something is "stupid" without taking in account the "market" and "pricing", it isn't stupid. (generally, I agree with you... go big or go home... my guess is something similar to what DonF is talking about hybrid)

welp! dont think ill be buying any new ps4 releases in 2019/2020.

Mostly likely a patch like PS4 Pro patches for PS5, the PS5 will be able to play PS4 games as well.

I would say its reasonable to suspect most of the PS exclusives will be built for both going forward, meaning a patch if its around release or already built in upon release.

I'm curious as to the capacity of the SSD, because getting something that's at least comparable in space to a PS4's drive won't be cheap even in 2020. And 500GB would hardly be enough considering ballooning game sizes... ideally, you'd have at least a 1TB drive.
